Ramesh Pampana - PeerSpot reviewer
Has consistently provided impressive data handling capabilities and robust security features
Some of the most valuable features of SAP Data Services include data extraction where SAP is the best in that perspective, but when it comes to analytics or the reporting tool, I prefer to connect with Microsoft Power BI, which is a fantastic tool. Typically, from an end-user perspective, SAP has a huge amount of data, in terms of terabytes of data, but when you analyze that, the best form of visualization is always through Microsoft Power BI. SAP Data Services provides a best-in-class return on investment, as SAP's vision and forecast are absolutely amazing. They are ahead of technology, building an ecosystem that meets the standards of the fast-changing digital economy. SAP is indeed good at all this now, with so many components such as SAP Signavio, SAP EINS, SAP Work Zone, SAP ALM, Cloud ALM, SAP public cloud, SAP private cloud, and BTP, all of which are essential to meet the latest cutting-edge technologies.

Have consistently ensured data accuracy and validation with built-in algorithms
I don't use the automated rule management feature in Talend Data Quality that much, so I cannot provide much feedback. I may not know what Talend Data Quality can improve for data quality. I'm not well-versed with the latest technology, so I cannot suggest additional functions that could make the product better or simplify my work with it. Generally, whatever jobs we have written in Talend Data Quality are working fine, so I am satisfied with that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of SAP Data Services lie in its ability to effectively observe and interpret the information within data related to people or facts, stands out."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the scheduling part."
"It's easy to understand and deploy. It's easy to create new applications, and depending on the complexity of the application, it is easy to deploy the new requirements."
"The logic is also simple. It makes it easy to build your extraction."
"Data Services' table comparison mechanism is very powerful. It's pretty hard to find a similar feature in other solutions."
"The maintenance of data services is the solution's most valuable feature."
"The product's most valuable features are data validation and rules."
"The most valuable feature of SAP Data Services is the integration with data sources."
"With its frequency function, we were able to pick a line of business to be addressed first in one of our conversion projects."
"It offers advanced features that allow you to create custom patterns and use regular expressions to identify data issues."
"This product speeds up the unit testing and QA for specific test scenarios. As a result, the development output quality can be evaluated and adjusted."
"It is saving a lot of time. Today, we can mask around a hundred million records in 10 minutes. Masking is one of the key pieces that is used heavily by the business and IT folks. Normally in the software development life cycle, before you project anything into the production environment, you have to test it in the test environment to make sure that when the data goes into production, it works, but these are all production files. For example, we acquired a new company or a new state for which we're going to do the entire back office, which is related to claims processing, payments, and member enrollment every year. If you get the production data and process it again, it becomes a compliance issue. Therefore, for any migrations that are happening, we have developed a new capability called pattern masking. This feature looks at those files, masks that information, and processes it through the system. With this, there is no PHI and PII element, and there is data integrity across different systems. It has seamless integration with different databases. It has components using which you can easily integrate with different databases on the cloud or on-premise. It is a drag and drop kind of tool. Instead of writing a lot of Java code or SQL queries, you can just drag and drop things. It is all very pictorial. It easily tells you where the job is failing. So, you can just go quickly and figure out why it is happening and then fix it."
"I like idea of storing the results of Data Quality jobs in a DB and having the ability to run reports in the DB to show a dashboard of quality metrics."
"We are able to get emails from URLs very easily using this function when others fail."
"It reduces the QA effort immensely by handling most of the test scenarios in a reusable way."
"The solution is customizable."

Cons

"The interface is not quite user-friendly and is in need of improvement."
"I want some more business intelligence applications. People need to know more and more about data, including the transformation rules, etc. Informatica is a better product for data cataloging. SAP should update the data catalog."
"The initial setup is complex."
"The migration of the solution between different environments is quite complex."
"SAP Data Services should be made a web-based solution."
"The solution could improve the overall features. There is a lot that can be done in the solution, therefor there are areas where it can improve. Additionally, there is a need to make it easier for one to create connections to other non-SAP systems. The flexibility to connect to other non-SAP systems is needed."
"The execution engines and processing engines have shortcomings and need improvements."
"It will work fine only in an SAP environment. It could be said that the integration with other vendors could be better."
"Heap space issues plague us consistently. We maxed it out and it runs fine, then it doesn’t, then it does."
"If the SQL input controls could dynamically determine the schema-based on the SQL alone, it would simplify the steps of having to use a manually created and saved schema for use in the TMap for the Postgres and Redshift components. This would make things even easier."
"You can't join more than two tables for analysis."
"They don't have any AI capabilities. Talend DQ is specifically for data quality, which only has data profiling. With Talend DQ, I cannot generate any reports today, so I need an ETL tool. It provides general Excel files, or I have to create some views. If instead of buying a new tool, Talend provides a reporting capability or solution, it would be great. It will reduce the development effort for creating these kinds of reports. We also manage the infrastructure for Talend. From the licensing perspective, for cloud, they only have seat licenses where one person is tied to one license, but for on-premise, they have concurrent licenses. It would be really awesome if they can provide concurrent licenses for the cloud so that if one person is not there, somebody else can use that license. Currently, it is not possible unless a person deactivates his or her license and moves the same seat license to someone else. We are one of the biggest customers in the central zone of the US for Talend, and this is the feedback that we have provided them again and again, but they come back and say that they aren't able to provide concurrent licenses on the cloud. In version 7.3, there is a feature for tokenization and de-tokenization of data. This is the feature that we are looking for. It is useful if somebody wants to see what we have masked and how do we demask it. This feature is not there in version 7.1. There are also a few other capabilities on the cloud, but we don't yet have a big footprint in the cloud."
"Finding assistance with issues can be spotty. With Python, there are literally millions of open source answers which are recent and apply to the version that we are using."
"NullPointerExceptions are going to be the death of me and are a big reason for our transition away from Talend. One day, it is fine with a 1000 blank rows, then the next day, it will find one blank cell and it breaks down."
"If we encounter issues, it’s most likely when using the Talend Open Studio. The studio can be slow, get stuck, or crash. But again, it can be caused by the resources of your machine or your connection with the repository. If we encounter issues with the Studio we restart the Studio. In emergencies, we create and use a new workspace."
"The performance is one area that Talend Data Quality could improve in because large volumes take a lot of time."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing is good, there is no problem."
"The price of SAP Data Services is a little high when compared to other solutions. Due to the pricing and capabilities, many clients are switching to other solutions."
"There is a one time purchase fee plus annual maintenance."
"The license price is expensive but medium to large-scale companies, should be able to afford it. Other solutions, such as Talend are easier to afford for smaller companies. Depending on the sources of the data where you are receiving your data you could be paying for more than one license."
"It's relatively expensive compared to other vendors, but it is competitive."
"The price is very reasonable."
"Its pricing is as per the enterprise agreement and not a concern for us."
"Speaking about prices, Oracle and SAP are market leaders. So, the prices are more."
"We did not purchase a separate license for DQ. It is part of our data platform suite, and I believe it is well-priced."
"I would advise to first take a look and at the Open Studio edition. Figure out what you need and purchase the appropriate license."
"It's a subscription-based platform, we renew it every year."
"It is cheaper than Informatica. Talend Data Quality costs somewhere between $10,000 to $12,000 per year for a seat license. It would cost around $20,000 per year for a concurrent license. It is the same for the whole big data solution, which comes with Talend DI, Talend DQ, and TDM."
"Moreover, the pricing structure stands out as highly competitive compared to other offerings in the market, making it a cost-effective choice for users."
