We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"StarWind allows us to move virtual machines from one physical host to another, which greatly reduces the downtime required for maintenance.""This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers.""I save both physical and virtual space.""A great feature is that I basically set it and forget it, as everything is automatic.""It has allowed me to effectively and confidently manage the maintenance of hosts where I can power off a host and have its VMs migrate to another one.""I've had to open a few support cases over the years due to administrator errors, and the support received was top-notch.""The access to our data is quicker and cheaper than it used to be in a traditional storage system.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"It is a good solution and it is easy to work on their platform.""I like NCI's dashboard. If there are any infrastructure issues, we'll get alerts inside the dashboard. NCI provides a single platform for managing all of our databases. We are running SQL and Linux databases.""The most valuable aspect of Nutanix is the performance of the storage, which is excellent. And controlling compute, storage, the network, and security all together in one box is very efficient for us. It gives us a single platform to manage our all infrastructure.""One of the most valuable features that can be found, is the inclusion of a hypervisor for free.""The most valuable feature is the integration of all parts in Prism Element, the browser-based management tool.""We are suggesting Nutanix to the management because of scalability and time efficiency.""Hyper-convergence is the most valuable feature for me as it allows me to scale the hardware according to project requirements.""One of the most valuable features is that it can be applied at any scale."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"I really value deduplication and compression to save space.""Good performance for VM environments""Multi-tiering, positively affects the efficiency of the storage space.""It is very stable, even during multiple power failures.""Integration with VMware""High availability including non-disruptive updates: We cannot afford downtime windows.""The replication feature provides another functionality to protect your data.""The implementation of both block and file system storage in a single GUI provides is better situated than most other storages."

More VNX [EOL] Pros →

Cons
"Ability to to test the virtual storage are network area and storage speed from StarWind Management Console.""Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved.""There should be publicly available tutorials on YouTube or other platforms that help the users to integrate this solution with other platforms, for example.""Scaling the product is fairly easy except for the computing aspect. It would entail another appliance. While not a show stopper, it isn't as easy as dropping in a few extra SSDs.""I would like to see more advanced free versions.""Updating the software can be a bit tricky.""The GUI deserves a little love.""Initially, when we first started, the sync was horrible."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"In the next release, I would like better and more competitive pricing.""Pricing and varieties of options could be better.""When we have issues with the solution, they tend to be around networking.""I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.""I would have liked it if Nutanix were a hardware as well as a software platform.""It would be great if it could emulate some of the features that their competitor VMware has, for example port mirroring or Netflow output at hypervisor level.""I would like to see official compatibility with Red Hat in the future.""In the licensing, it needs to be clear about features because it is not clear whether Flow is integrated or not."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"The administrative console (Navisphere/Unisphere) needs some improvement, especially on their Java-based GUI. The updated version of Java is not compatible.""If the VNX had embedded encryption, that would be great.""Intel Xeon processors with under 2 GHz processing speeds could be replaced with more recent ones.""VNX can improve by offering flexible upgrade options. It's not possible to add a single HDD to a current array and there are fixed rules to make upgrades.""EMC VNX needs to support bigger SSDs. Next generation EMC Unity will do this.""EMC VNX needs to support bigger SSD and the Next Generation EMC Unity does this.""There is an easy replication process between distinct data centers via VPLEX and/or RPA. But I hope in the future that EMC/Dell could replicate this with other types of storage.""The scalability is average because the storage has some hardware limitations and, obviously, operating system limitations."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The initial pricing and licensing are reasonable. Yearly EMC is more expensive."
  • "While EMC tends to be on the expensive side, the stability and support of their products are top-notch and I feel are worth the cost."
  • "Make sure you understand how the licensing works and that you are getting the right set of licenses if you need array-to-array replication."
  • "Over time, VNX has become pricier than its competitors, and we have turned enthusiastically to Unity."
  • "Pricing is somewhat higher, especially in Zambia, perhaps due to the low sales volume."
  • "The initial pricing and licensing are reasonable, the yearly EMC is more expensive"
  • "Reducing dependency on JavaServer Pages (JSP) could improve the administrative overhead."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
