The solution reduced our operational expenditures and is able to identify points before we even noticed them
The management interface seems to be designed for high-resolution screens. Somebody with a smaller-resolution screen might not like the web interface. I run a 4K monitor on it, so everything fits on the screen. With a lower resolution like 1080, you need to scroll a lot. Everything is in smaller windows. It doesn't seem to be designed for smaller screens. When I change the resolution to 1080, I only see half of what I would on my big 4K monitor. It would be annoying to have to scroll to see the flow chart. They have a flow chart that goes top to bottom like a tree. On a lower resolution, it might be nice if that scrolls horizontally because it's long, narrow, and tall. It's only three icons wide, but it's 15 icons tall. I think it would be helpful to have the ability to change that for a smaller screen and customize the widget.

Even moving the service over to another server can be done very easily. Although, having the ability to automate some things would be nice.
Customer Service: Customer service is 10/10. The sales rep I dealt with was great and always stays in communication. Technical Support: Technical Support is 10/10. They have a chat window, where you can start a chat after you log in to your server if you are having a problem. They even have a way to create a ticket from the login screen in the configured options, in which you can attach logs directly.

Have faced limitations due to high costs but have maintained reliability over time
The primary issue is the pricing, which is very expensive for my company's budget. We cannot afford to pay such a large fee. We are not Microsoft or BMW; we are a small company. As a small company, I have no power to negotiate directly with VMware. Perhaps larger companies have more opportunity to contract directly with VMware, but I do not have that leverage. The only path I can follow is to change solutions. Net.spA is a company working in the field of waste management. We are not a technological company, so we do not have a large margin to justify purchasing and maintaining the VMware infrastructure at current costs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Turbonomics ability to present suggested improvements, and enact those changes upon approval, have been very helpful in our environment."
"The top level view of my overall infrastructure's health has been a great tool."
"With Operations Manager, I can see my entire infrastructure in one view, in real time."
"We no longer have to constantly manually manage host utilization to keep some hosts from running much hotter than others."
"This product has allowed us to see how dense we can make our ESXi clusters."
"As a manager of a large complex critical healthcare infrastructure, this product has been a huge benefit to me and my team."
"Automation and planning capabilities have become a valuable asset for us."
"Customer Service: Very good. Very quick response times. Technical Support: Very good. Knowledgeable staff."
"With a single click, anyone can find and fix old, broken or invalid snapshots."
"The ability to analyze my virtual infrastructure data against a rule base of 730+ rules has been the most valuable."
"I like the dashboards. We can view in our service groups before something in our service goes wrong and causes issues."
"What I like most about VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) is how it integrates into the vCenter, giving you a similar hierarchical view of your host, your VMs, your resource pools, and so on, with great granularity so you can go pretty deep into the metrics and data retention, going several months back to plot performance trends leading up to an issue or for post-incident management."
"It gives me metrics that I can share with the rest of my team. I can say, "Look, this server is performing poorly." Even down into the Windows Servers, which are my primary bread and butter, it gives me visibility into situations such as when they're running out of storage and I need to expand the drives. It gives that top-level visibility to get in and fix a lot of problems."
"It is about being able to keep tabs on your VMware environment as a whole, instead of having to log into your vCenter all day and keeping tabs."
"Over-provisioning helps us a bit, and we have a lot over-provisioned VMs, thus we show different teams that this type of resource can help manage their environment, and with over-provisioning, we track it all."
"It has helped our organization because we can keep the metrics within our ratios, so if something jumps out we can be on it right away, and it has also helped to reduce troubleshooting time."
"I like the dashboards; I like being able to just look at it and see what my environment is doing."
"Some of the forecasting features give us a picture of, let's say, in six months I know that my storage will be full, or I'll be out of resources. It gives us a little bit of forecasting."

Cons

"It does not fully understand our DR/SRM (active/standby) infrastructure as we have hosts with nothing on them."
"The interface could be a little cleaner and navigation a little easier."
"Not quite used to the new UI."
"I think the web interface could be better, I know they are working on a new one so I'm looking forward to seeing the final product when its released."
"UI is still maturing. The UI is relatively easy to use but still does not have that professional look to it."
"Certain versions have had glitches in the past but they've usually been fixed or patched within a matter of days."
"We would also like to see expansion made in the UCS tools that they provide, to allow viewing the entire UCS environment and not just the equipment that hosts a hypervisor."
"The one point is the reporting. We do have reports out of it, but they're not the level of graphical detail I would like."
"Having the ability to automate some things would be nice but is not a requirement with the product today."
"For the initial setup, there should be some sort of auto discovery of the environment. That should be enabled. It has the ability to discover a main node, but it could still be made easier, to reduce the initial configuration and setup time."
"I don't have a good opinion of VMware support."
"Adding some intelligence to VMware Aria Operations, such as event correlation, and some level of AI apps will improve the solution, similar to what we see with the more advanced monitoring solutions that we don't currently have."
"I would like to see more integration between vRealize Operations, Log Insight, and Network Insight. It would be nice if they worked a bit better together."
"If I put on the hat of a client, I would say cost needs improvement."
"Some of the more advanced stuff takes a bit of time to dig into it. It takes a little longer to setup if you want really detailed stuff."
"If I put on the hat of a client, I would say cost needs improvement. For clients with reasonable-sized infrastructure farms, you're looking at licensing at either per socket or per VM, and if you have an installation of any size, you're doing it per socket, and the per-socket licensing is a little heavy. Per VM license, if they have large numbers of VM, it is just not practical."
"The descriptions are not quite as user-friendly as I would like but, for the most, it's part pretty user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I have not seen Turbonomic's new pricing since IBM purchased it. When we were looking at it in my previous company before IBM's purchase, it was compatible with other tools."
"When we have expanded our licensing, it has always been easy to make an ROI-based decision. So, it's reasonably priced. We would like to have it cheaper, but we get more benefit from it than we pay for it. At the end of the day, that's all you can hope for."
"I don't know the current prices, but I like how the licensing is based on the number of instances instead of sockets, clusters, or cores. We have some VMs that are so heavy I can only fit four on one server. It's not cost-effective if we have to pay more for those. When I move around a VM SQL box with 30 cores and a half-terabyte of RAM, I'm not paying for an entire socket and cores where people assume you have at least 10 or 20 VMs on that socket for that pricing."
"In the last year, Turbonomic has reduced our cloud costs by $94,000."
"Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
"I'm not involved in any of the billing, but my understanding is that is fairly expensive."
"Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
"We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."

"The price of the solution is expensive."
"I have reduced the time to troubleshoot for my customers."
"If one is low price and ten is high price, I rate the product price a ten."
"We did an enterprise license agreement with our VMware partner and put this in our bundle. We tried it and loved it, so we use it now."
"The predictive analysis of the infrastructure helps our customers to reduce downtime and improve capacity planning. Issues are fixed faster with vROps."
"Pricing could always be cheaper, but it's acceptable."
"If the VMs were trimmed, then we wouldn't have to buy as much software/hardware, and this means less licenses. While most of it is VMware licenses, which are relatively cheap, there are SQL licenses for Microsoft, and this is where we could start saving a lot of money."
"Every VMware product is a licensing challenge. It's always costly. It's based on processors. From a technical side, the product is very good. The challenging part is always the licensing. They should have some kind of alternate pricing models."
