Automated cloud backups have strengthened ransomware recovery and reduced laptop data loss
The best features Dell PowerProtect Backup Services offers include source-side deduplication. The lightweight agent resides on the client, deduplicates data locally before transmitting, and only uploads the unique or modified blocks, which drastically minimizes bandwidth utilization and saves the cloud storage footprint, rather than transferring massive data blocks over the internet and duplicating them at the storage target. Another valuable feature is the air-gapped encrypted storage. The platform uses advanced data scrambling that decouples the actual data from its metadata, storing the data as an isolated or immutable cloud that cannot be overwritten or deleted by ransomware. The zero egress restore model is also significant. A massive pain point with cloud-native storage is the fee structure, but Dell PowerProtect Backup Services stands out by allowing unlimited full restore points without charging data egress fees, which represents a huge cost to enterprises. Unified multi-workload management provides the ability to control data from Microsoft 365, SaaS applications, distributed employee laptops, or virtual machine servers in a single centralized pane of glass, which eliminates the need to jump between different backup solutions. The impact of Dell PowerProtect Backup Services on my organization has been positive. The backup process has become more reliable and automated, reducing the need for manual intervention and lowering the risk of missed backups. Recovery time has improved, allowing us to restore critical systems and data much faster during incidents. The platform's deduplication and compression capabilities have helped us reduce storage costs while optimizing backup efficiency. Additionally, its centralized management and reporting gives us visibility into our data protection environment, making it easier to monitor compliance and identify potential issues before they become problems.

The solution provides the ability to backup all types of cloud drives, is inexpensive, and has decent support
MSP360 Backup provides the backup functionality, but we need to provide the storage component. We can use Azure, AWS, or another provider, but we need to choose the storage provider and create a bucket to store our data. The vendor is making changes to improve the functionality of the service and the separation of storage, but I would like to see more integration and a knowledge base of the tool. Currently trying to understand why the storage is separated and how to implement the storage properly is a challenge. Using the solution incurs additional charges for the device storage and backup which are not included in the service. Unlike other solutions such as Kohl which includes everything at one price. MSP360 Backup can be improved by adding inclusive pricing.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The user interface of Dell PowerProtect Backup Services is simple to manage and can manage multiple use cases on a single dashboard, which is very valuable from the customer perspective."
"Some of the best features that we find within the suite of Dell PowerProtect Data Domain and Dell PowerProtect Backup Services is the integration into the vSphere portal, VXRAILs, and areas that have made it so quick and easy to use."
"When it comes to the features I find most valuable in Dell PowerProtect Backup Services, I assess its ability to integrate with AWS, Azure, and GCP for consistent data protection."
"The features I appreciate most with Dell PowerProtect Backup Services are ease of use, as the interface is well-designed."
"The handiest feature of Dell PowerProtect Backup Services is that it syncs up our backups to other locations—we don't have to worry about our backups not syncing to other locations, and it monitors and reports to us if there are any issues."
"We have seen a positive return on investment from Dell PowerProtect Backup Services, with improved operational efficiency, reduced storage requirements, faster recovery time, lower administrative effort, approximately fifty to seventy percent reduction in backup storage through compression and deduplication, forty to fifty percent reduction in backup administrator effort, a nine percent improvement in backup rate, and a fifty percent reduction in recovery time for critical workloads, which together minimize downtime and business disruption during incidents."
"Some of the returns on investment I see with this product are security and saving time."
"The solution is easy to access and handles things efficiently."
"The feature that I have found most valuable is its online backup capacity because you don't have to do an entire backup again and again, it just does whatever you type in, you type a, it goes a, you type b, it goes b. It doesn't take an entire site up again and again. So that incremental and bit by bit backup is important, it is a nice feature here."
"The UI is pretty good. It's very simple. That is one thing that we like about this. It's very user-friendly."
"One massive advantage of this solution, as compared to more enterprise products, is that no firewall changes are needed on the client's premises. For the product to back up from the client's premise to the cloud, it just needs port 8 and port 443, which are anyway always open. This was one of the things that made us decide to go with the product. It is very difficult to justify a firewall change for a small client who doesn't even know what a firewall is and how to maintain a firewall, or doesn't have anybody maintaining their firewall. You then have to maintain the firewall. MSP360 Backup takes away firewall change requirements, VPNs, or channels that are needed for the backup."
"Every user of IT infrastructure needs to have a backup, and this is a good solution to implement because it is so easy and straightforward."
"Provides connectivity to a lot of different cloud storage solutions."
"The solution is appliance-free, the initial setup is very straightforward, the scalability and stability have never been a problem for us, technical support is very good, and we have found the price point to be quite good."
"The best feature is that it's very user-friendly to do scheduled backups and version maintenance."

Cons

"I think the pricing could be better, or they could improve support, automations, or customizations."
"Dell PowerProtect Backup Services could be improved in several areas."
"In discussion with the company last year at Dell Tech World, the pricing model needs improvement because they are using shared resources."
"There are ways Dell PowerProtect Backup Services can be improved."
"In the next release for Dell PowerProtect services, the final step would be to integrate both the on-prem and the cloud-based models that they are using, allowing us to get that final single pane of glass to function with everything in the product suite."
"Dell PowerProtect Backup Services can be improved, and the biggest improvement they could make would be with their support side, as often when we call in for support, we possess more knowledge than the support staff, which is disappointing."
"Maybe implement an easier interface for basic users. For example, a set-up wizard with all the commonly used features as default."
"If I have an incident and I need to restore something very fast, I want to restore a particular virtual machine, maybe in an hour and that is not possible to do with MSP360."
"The interface feels like it is targeted for end users who typically are looking for an all-in-one integrated push button solution. It would be better if the interface had a beginner mode and an expert mode."
"As for what can be improved, some reports could be simplified so that you know how much backup you have done and what your backup details are. That report is available but it is very tough to get. I would like to know "today I have just uploaded 35 MB, tomorrow I have loaded 10 MB so my trend of backup is increasing.""
"Using the solution incurs additional charges for the device storage and backup which are not included in the service."
"The Linux GUI leaves a lot to be desired. It lacks many of the features of the Windows version and is buggy, but it is still usable."
"The product could be more user-friendly."
"The other issue is that I don't like the implementation of the SQL backup."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Pricing is reasonable although can be quite a large upfront cost."
"It provides a good cost savings compared to our previous cloud backup."
"The cost is pretty inexpensive. Around four to five dollars per device, per workstation on each server."
"Its pricing needs improvement."
"We have a very good return on investment."
"MSP360 is vastly cheaper than its competitors and has almost all the same features."
"The solution is expensive."
"It includes a standard licensing fee. Once a year, there is a rebranding fee. The licensing costs are available on the internet for MSP360 Backup. There is a discount structure where if you have over 50 devices, you get a 50% discount. So, my cost is $2 a license per month."
