We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product is very stable.""We were attracted by the flexibility of being able to put in a new shelf whenever we needed to, to expand.""It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""Dell EqualLogic PS series is a highly stable solution.""The solution has been working well overall.""It has contributed to the implementation of virtualization and all its benefits.""If you have one datacenter fail, the VMs will start to run inside the other data center.""Its high availability. It has a lot of redundancy and good management software as well as good alerting."

More Dell EqualLogic PS series Pros →

"The most valuable feature is the one-click to update the firmware and software.""I definitely find the reduced power consumption very valuable.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is easy to use, integrates with other hardware configurations, and is simple to manage.""The level of statistical performance data that it can confirm in real-time is extremely useful. I can see what my VM’s hosts and guests are doing from a single pane of glass and identify issues before they would otherwise become apparent.""I like NCI's dashboard. If there are any infrastructure issues, we'll get alerts inside the dashboard. NCI provides a single platform for managing all of our databases. We are running SQL and Linux databases.""The scalability, performance, and licensing model are the most valuable features.""It has centralized management. It is easy for an engineer to manage. More work goes to patching, upgrades, and maintenance. Nutanix is very easy to upgrade. It takes one click. Engineers do not need to spend additional time with Nutanix for upgrades. With one click, it will complete the upgrade and show the results. Other hypervisor solutions are not like this, specifically since you must do all the components one by one.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure's most valuable feature is the flexibility to move the VMs easily, keeping everything together."

Cons
"I can't buy any more solutions provided by EqualLogic...Since I can't buy it anymore, I don't receive any updates on the solution. Also, this is the last year in which one can buy support for the solution.""Dell EqualLogic PS series could improve the performance because in our hybrid configuration the read speed is faster than the write speed.""There is no option for mixing RAID types in one device.""Synchronous replication uses space inefficiently.""The replication efficiency needs to be improved.""6510 and 6610 have two iSCSI connections in each controller. Why do 6110xxx members have only one, and why do the same members have the possibility of having an active iSCSI interface in the passive controller? It could make a lot of noise with a failover.""The performance isn't as good as, for example, Nimble.""The solution is out of date and the new version has a lot of advanced features."

More Dell EqualLogic PS series Cons →

"The licensing cost could be lower.""In the next release, I would like better and more competitive pricing.""If we can have certified compatibility with other companies, such as Oracle, then it would let us know that they function correctly together.""Nutanix could streamline Acropolis' advanced management to keep pace with its competitors. For example, in VMware vSphere ESXi Hypervisor, you can directly put a host into maintenance mode via the GUI. However, it takes several steps to do this with Nutanix Acropolis, and you need to use the command-line interface for most of the steps.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS could improve by adding some NAS features, similar to the ones that are available in the NetApp solution.""There should be a little more access to Nutanix files.""I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.""We did have some integration issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
  • "It is a fair price."
  • "Licensing is pretty straightforward."
  • "It seemed expensive at first, but the durability lowered the cost of ownership dramatically over time."
  • "Initial packages include all upgrades and services."
  • "There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
  • "I didn't buy it. It was another person seven years ago. So, I don't really know, but all storage platforms cost a lot of money. It is probably in the mid-range, but you get what you pay for."
  • "Dell EqualLogic PS series can improve its scale-out feature. Sometimes the customer has a limited budget for storage expansion. When they want to expand their capacity, they need to buy a complete controller plus storage capacity, which sometimes is out of their budget. If Dell EqualLogic PS series support could scale up the environment in which only hard drive extension controllers should be supported, then customers can expand within a lower budget."
  • More Dell EqualLogic PS series Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
