Offers good time navigation features and we haven't had stability problems in the twelve years we've been using it
The initial setup was supposed to be complex, and a guy from Atempto went to our site and they did it with us together. So, in the end, it was quite clear and straightforward. The deployment took one day. From time to time, we require maintenance. Most things can be done also automatically. We prefer to do some manually like recycling virtual cartridges. Two people are required for maintenance. Two people use it daily. Time Navigator runs daily, for some backups, even more, three, four times a day, for critical stuff. But for intervention, we have two, three per week.

Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The time navigation is the most valuable feature."
"If you need anything, it's written in, and if you have problems, a development engineer is quite fast to fix it."
"The rate of duplication is great."
"Commvault Cloud provides an excellent solution."
"I like Commvault's immutable backups. It integrates with other solutions in our IT infrastructure very well."
"Commvault Cloud stands out for its ease of use and reliable backups, along with its ability to handle large data volumes for VMs, servers, and applications."
"Integration with Active Directory and the Azure platform make it a complete solution."
"Commvault is very simple to use and it is automated."
"The product's stability is good enough."
"With Commvault, we run a single job as a one-pass job, it will run backup and archive in a single job, no need to run two jobs for backup and archive them differently."

Cons

"They are working on the improvement we're looking for. The web GUI is flash-based and in around one or two months, they will put everything on HTML5."
"They are working on the improvement we're looking for. The web GUI is flash-based and in around one or two months, they will put everything on HTML5."
"There could be improvements to the backup failures."
"Commvault could make the product more cost-effective on the public cloud side."
"Data center backup must be improved."
"The implementation is very difficult and should be improved and made easier."
"The only problem is that some of what we snap most of is the VMs. We found about 10% of the VMs that we can't snap because they're too interactive. It actually causes the application to crash."
"Commvault Complete Data Protection meets market standards, but an area for improvement is its licensing model. It would be good if it could use the subscription-based model rather than the traditional licensing model."
"Its dashboard could be improved to provide a summarized version of all the jobs instead of having to go through each one of them. We should easily be able to glance at all issues. If I had not gone with the on-premise version, I would have had regular reports with the cloud version. It would be an advantage if they increase the compression rate of the backup. I am keeping it on-prem, so I'll need more disks depending on the policies that I have in the retention period. Its price could also be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage."
"The support needs more improvement. I feel that the support is not yet up to the mark, with not enough professional engineers to provide assistance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."
"It is not the cheapest solution. I think the pricing is fair for mid-side customers. It is between all the other options."
"Using a subscription-based license has been advantageous."
"Commvault Backup & Recovery is perhaps the best value for our money that I have seen in a backup product."
"It is cheaper than NetBackup, but its price can be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage. Its licensing is on a yearly basis."
"The tool is cost-effective."
"Everyone else offers the subscription-based model nowadays, while Commvault Complete Data Protection still has the traditional license model, where you must buy a set of licenses. You pay for one hundred licenses even if you only use fifty virtual machines, so the licensing model needs improvement."
"I looked at this at the beginning of the year and I don't remember what the prices were for all the other services, but I thought that Metallic's was fair. It was also highly rated, which was even more important than cost because I need a reliable, secure, backup method."
