Offers good time navigation features and we haven't had stability problems in the twelve years we've been using it
Pros and Cons
  • "The time navigation is the most valuable feature."
  • "They are working on the improvement we're looking for. The web GUI is flash-based and in around one or two months, they will put everything on HTML5."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for the server infrastructure, the entire VMware clusters on backup, and we use also the internal agents inside the virtual machines to make a file of the backups. Even though it's double, we prefer to do it this way.

What is most valuable?

The time navigation is the most valuable feature. In the beginning, it was one of the only solutions that really worked well on Macintosh because our clients are 99% Apple, and by that time we purchased Atempo. Also, our server infrastructure was half Apple and half Linux. So that was in the beginning.

What needs improvement?

They are working on the improvement we're looking for. The web GUI is flash-based and in around one or two months, they will put everything on HTML5.

In some places, you'll find something that you can't clone and it would be better if at those points, it would be made possible to clone. I addressed this to the developers to do make improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Atempo Time Navigator for twelve years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have been using it for 12 years now and it's really stable. It's a product we would recommend to someone.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is friendly. They are capable. They are fast. And we have a personal contact there so we can drive three hours to Paris and we can meet with them.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was supposed to be complex, and a guy from Atempto went to our site and they did it with us together. So, in the end, it was quite clear and straightforward.

The deployment took one day.

From time to time, we require maintenance. Most things can be done also automatically. We prefer to do some manually like recycling virtual cartridges.

Two people are required for maintenance. Two people use it daily.

Time Navigator runs daily, for some backups, even more, three, four times a day, for critical stuff. But for intervention, we have two, three per week.

What about the implementation team?

Atempo deployed it for us.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to someone considering this solution is to take all the information that Atempo offers. Read the manual. Usually, IT does not do this but do it so you know everything you have to do. They have good documentation. Most companies do not, but they do it. If you need anything, it's written in. If you have problems, a development engineer is quite fast to fix it. They have an internal report from that software. They just go to work and fix it in a short time. That's why we like this software.

In the next release, we asked for Office 365 support and they announced it months ago. It's coming and it's on the way.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.
