Unified backups have protected virtual machines and applications and optimize storage efficiency
Regarding automated disaster recovery, we have not used Veritas NetBackup automated disaster recovery because according to the RFP terms and conditions, we are not supposed to have automated failover or failback, as we are a government entity and cannot violate the rules of the RFP. My feedback about granular recovery in Veritas NetBackup is that we have been doing verifications of the backed-up data to restore from point to point and time to time, focusing on file level or database level. When it comes to integration with cloud services, we have not started because we are a government entity and are not allowed to store any data in the cloud at this time. From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong. When I initiate a backup from my laptop or server to the appliance or the tape media using Veritas NetBackup, the encryption channels are not strong, and there are not many options available. Whatever is there is by default and not changeable. We cannot modify any encryption facilities, and security is a big concern nowadays, so you need to look into that. Regarding the functionality part of Veritas NetBackup, I think this encryption feature should be stronger and integrated from point to point, not just at specific levels. When I initiate a backup, all the communication channels involved should be encrypted until it reaches the endpoint, meaning from client to server, server to client, and client device.

Pros

"Flexibility really means a lot for us. Being able to address almost every client backup and recovery requirement means that we have a tremendous amount of confidence as do our partners that Blueshift is going to be able to deploy a solution quickly and efficiently."
"It has helped us to provide comprehensive data protection with high recovery rates and a malware scanning feature."
"Virtual Disaster Recovery in version 13 is a game-changer, especially for VMWare shops."
"There are two primary improvements of the Asigra platform with the recent version 13.1 SP1: Virtualization: a tremendous variety of data protection solutions for virtual machines, and Cloud-2-Cloud for Office 365, Google, Amazon, etc., making this a full package of data protection platform."
"Since we have implemented Asigra we don’t have an administrator to do manual backup to tapes and external HDD; everything is automated and there are no hassles for the administrator."
"The Asigra product on the whole is a fantastic solution and I would highly recommend this as it delivers everything our business and our subsequent customers required."
"Cloud backup is easier to manage and administer than our previous tape solution."
"We can provide a reliable service to our customers."
"One of the best features is the performance is very good."
"The backup and restore functions are very valuable aspects of the product."
"It offers everything I need from a backup system."
"I have seen value delivered to customers I sold Veritas NetBackup to because they now have a reliable solution that they can always depend on, allowing CIOs to sleep better."
"Veritas NetBackup provides good backup performance, and I can mount the snapshot without an installer."
"The stability of the product has been excellent over the years."
"It provides us with the versatility to back up everything we require which eliminates the need for a secondary backup solution."
"Its most valuable features are flexibility and reliability."

Cons

"They should have 24/7 support for customers in different time zones. They are slow to respond to requests, and I get the impression that the ServiceDesk is overloaded."
"I think the product needs more diversity in Hyper-V."
"There are improvements required with the virtualization solution, I'm sure we will see a significant change in 2017."
"Some more work on reporting tools is required to help get better auto-generated information and analysis from the system."
"Personally speaking, I think the reporting should be more interactive."
"Technical Support: 5/10, Due to different timezones it would always be difficult to get hold of a tech."
"At present, downloading the relevant files and placing them into a directory on the DS-System is a little cumbersome and open to error/malicious use."
"The UI could do with a facelift."
"Veritas NetBackup is quite expensive, and sometimes vendors do not suggest it and always recommend different other options, especially after certain points, which is a concern."
"From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong."
"I find the cost of this solution to be high."
"Veritas NetBackup I would not recommend, because it's too expensive as for the current implementation."
"I would advise not to use this tool. I think between the licensing issues and the older solution mentality it is not a great solution."
"It was very complicated, and it required a lot of work in terms of management. We have moved to Rubrik. One of the reasons for getting rid of Veritas NetBackup was the fact that at one point, we had the support staff with 12 to 15 people to manage Veritas NetBackup, whereas, with Rubrik, I'm the only one managing Rubrik. There is one more person who works with me mostly due to the fact that in case I'm not around, someone else knows what to do, but I'm the only one who is a full-time manager of Rubrik. The complexity of Veritas required a large staff to manage it. We had daily issues that had to be looked into and resolved. A lot of these issues revolved around Veritas' handling of VMware, which is why first we moved VMware off Veritas. After we did that, we were also able to reduce our staff count. Their licensing is a disaster. It is extremely complicated. In most cases, Veritas themselves can't understand their own licensing."
"The ransomware protection needs improvement."
"I have been involved in upgrades. They have not been straightforward. Some of them have required us to make changes to our architecture and production environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of Asigra could improve, it is expensive. We have purchased an annual license."
"Asigra is priced competitively, but requires technical expertise to operate, optimize, and maintain its services."
"The solution is expensive compared to other products."
"I rate the product's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Veritas NetBackup is more expensive than Cohesity and Rubrik, but it is comparable in price to Commvault, IBM, and Dell."
"The solution is expensive."
"If you want to have more scalability you have to purchase more licenses. The license is annually and there are a lot of different licensing depending on the number of terabytes needed. It is not based on per-user, core, or servers. You can backup anything you want using the purchased terabyte space."
"Pricing is good, under our budget, and flexible."
"A better price would make this product more competitive."
"Veritas NetBackup's price could be a problem for small businesses."
