Executive Summary
Updated on Jun 27, 2023

We performed a comparison between AppDynamics and ITRS Geneos based on real PeerSpot user reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Check Point Harmony Connect's difficulty level seems to depend on the user's familiarity with the portal. On the other hand, Prisma Access by Palo Alto Networks' setup complexity is influenced by the size of the enterprise and the expertise of the IT staff. Pre-deployment preparation for Prisma Access could take a considerable amount of time ranging from a few days to a couple of months.
  • Features: AppDynamics is great for alerting and release management, building dashboards, and providing business insights. It is also very user-friendly and scalable. On the other hand, ITRS Geneos is highly customizable and has real-time monitoring capabilities, making it a standout tool in the industry. Its flexible dashboard also makes it a powerful option for users.
  • Pricing: AppDynamics is costly and has a complicated licensing system, while ITRS Geneos offers a flexible pricing model that is based on usage and industry. ITRS Geneos even has free training available, but some businesses have switched to other monitoring tools because of the cost.
  • Service and Support: Technical support is decent but could be more prompt in communication. ITRS Geneos receives high praise for technical support, but some reviewers note slow response times and communication issues.
  • ROI: AppDynamics measures performance and enhances JVM performance, leading to significant ROI for clients. ITRS Geneos identifies issues and prevents downtime.

Comparison Results: AppDynamics stands out for its extensive range of features, including the ability to monitor applications of different technologies, release management capabilities, and business insights. ITRS Geneos, on the other hand, is highly customizable and flexible, with real-time data monitoring and reasonable pricing. However, it lacks a mobile app and needs improvement in dashboarding and cloud monitoring. AppDynamics is preferred overall for its comprehensive features.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like that AppDynamics allows every organization to have what they want to see, like for my organization, we're able to customize the dashboard to show us details of what we want to see in our transactions.""AppDynamics' most valuable feature is Business iQ, which is based on analytics.""We have been able to monitor our applications more accurately.""The most valuable feature of AppDynamics is its ability to track the transactions between different applications.""Despite dozens of deployments across hundreds of applications- we have yet to see a case where AD is negatively impacting application execution or functionality.""This solution is easy to use and very powerful, it is a complete tool for us.""Has helped us to increase customer acquisitions and reduce revenue leakage.""The AppDyniamics technical support is good. We haven't had any problems with them. They answer very quickly."

"I would say that it is an easy-to-use monitoring tool. Amongst the available monitoring tools, it is a really good option.""ITRS can define rules to alert when certain parameters that you monitor breach a threshold. Rules can be configured to fire recovery actions automatically to clear the alert""One of the most valuable features of ITRS Geneos is the active time feature that helps with the trading applications that I support.""It's a very powerful application monitoring tool across the industry. Many free, open-source tools are available. There are also paid tools, but ITRS Geneos is a real-time application monitoring tool where the user can monitor, self-configure, and manage alerts through their console.""The great advantage of this tool is real-time monitoring.""One thing we're utilizing in Geneos is the Gateway-SQL. That's really helpful for us. Using Gateway-SQL, we are able to merge two different views into one. Suppose we have to check something in the log and that we have to check something in the database and do a comparison before publishing a result. We can achieve that using Gateway-SQL.""Ability to monitor logs for potential issues to prevent app outages before problems get a chance to arise. That's invaluable for our teams in a fast-paced trading environment.""One of the best aspects of Geneos is that it has a broad scope and can cover a lot of use cases. You can write your own scripts to monitor really specific things. And the rules that you can put in place can be quite complex for the alerts."

Cons
"The dashboard can be better. Also, the automated reports could be improved.""AppDynamics is dealing with a lot of products and technologies, so we need to have clear documentation.""More native support for other hardware is needed because having to install various extensions and perform extra setup for different devices is really challenging, and not as easy or straightforward as it is in other products.""The GUI can be overwhelming at first to a novice Dev or Ops support person, and the possible root causes of an issue do not bubble up to the first screen you see.""I’d like to see better out-of-the-box visual reporting so that we can roll this up to management.""At this time, we don't have much visibility on the virtual environment, monitoring, and all other things. We have visibility only for database monitoring, and we have noticed performance impact when deploying database agents on the database server. We got to know this from AppDynamics support also that we should not deploy database agents from the database server. When agents are deployed on the same server and the database is monitored from there, we are not getting database server metrics. Therefore, we don't have those insights, and sometimes, we struggle because of that. They can improve this functionality so that we do not have a performance impact, and we can deploy anywhere. This would help us a lot. In terms of end-user monitoring, currently, it is not working for us because there are some complexities. It is a little complicated, and it takes a little bit of time to understand where you need to make changes. It would be very helpful if they can provide some template designs for end-user monitoring. When our servers are running on VMs, we don't get many insights from the VM side. I don't know whether it is possible to have visibility beyond the database, server, and application and whether there are some features where we can deploy AppDynamics on VMs as well. Such functionality would give us more control over storage, VM, OS, and database. It will also provide complete visibility of our hardware and software.""When you have high stress of visits I do not know if you are more stress because of the amount of visits or because you have to wait eternal 60 seconds to find out it things are going well or you already have mess.""AppDynamics should improve its ability to track all the transactions."

More AppDynamics Cons →

"There is one drawback to using lightweight data collection: we lack the feature of observability based on time series, such as historical model data. This makes it difficult to view data in ITRS. ITRS needs to improve this feature.""Data visualization – real time and historical – is a weakness.""There is a part of the rules for monitoring alerts. I want to understand more about how to choose the samples and the requirements for the rules. That is the part that I want to understand better and get better training for.""We all look at the same things - CPU, disk space, paging stats, service status with RAG status on each. That could be provided straight out, saving significant time.""Geneos' application monitoring could be improved a lot. Products like AppDynamics and Dynatrace provide the process thread-level monitoring, but Geneos lacks these capabilities.""The dashboard feature is full of bugs. Grouping items results in a distorted dashboard.""They have the Webslinger solution where you can see when something is alerting. It's a little bit cumbersome.""ITRS Geneos cloud monitoring is very weak and can use improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product’s licencing policy is competitive. However, properly identify and size your needs to get the best rate."
  • "As a technical person, and as an application development team, they all understand that this is the right tool for us. But when it comes to budget and financial matters, it takes days and weeks to convince upper management to buy this tool. So they should do something more on licensing costs."
  • "It is not a cheap tool, but you also save in manpower to setup because it is easy and fast. At the end of the day, I think the revenue is much better. BUT, they have an awful co-term mode of licensing."
  • "It could be cheaper. It's a little cost prohibitive. There are so many features that also show a lot of value, but it’s not always easy to justify the cost."
  • "Because it is priced per JVM, the price can increase pretty fast, into the millions. We have had challenges because we had to justify the price to our clients, as well, when we are putting in certain tools."
  • "It would be better if there were more solutions incorporated into the base price. "
  • "The way it is structured in terms of price could be better. You pay for individual modules and that adds on to the cost, which detracts you from implementing those modules and slows you down."
  • "Take into consideration what you get for specific pricing models and how much it costs to add on things you may need later."
  • More AppDynamics Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "You will get the best price if you get a single global deal."
  • "The product is priced quite high. There are pricing options for customers based on the size of the environment and plug-ins used by the monitoring system."
  • "Pricing and licensing is based on the requirements."
  • "The licensing cost may seem expensive upfront. However, the service is outstanding, the tool does things that no other tools can do, and the customizability more than makes up for the cost of licensing."
  • "Pricing is the touchy subject, even here. Upper management always wants us to find a cheaper solution. But we have so much integrated with ITRS... It's expensive, but it does its job very well. And you set it and go."
  • "It is expensive. They have to look at the model around when we move to cloud and how that's going to work. The licensing cost does pay off because of the improvements in support to our business."
  • "When I first came in, their pricing was very high. ITRS had a high expectation of what their price should be based on perceived value. I think they have been realizing, more recently, that there are other competitors, so their pricing is a lot better. Licensing for on-premise is okay, however I feel there is quite some work to be done for cloud and containers. We're still working with them to try and work out what that pricing should look like."
  • "Given our spend and the amount of service we have in it, the pricing is quite reasonable."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the AppDynamics solution.

Chandan K., Associate Director at a financial services firm, says, “The tracing is the most important aspect of the solution. The way it traces the information within the particular application or within the particular infrastructure is great. That actually helps. Apart from that, all of the data that's in the production APM is good.”

PeerSpot user, Yacin H., Responsable Commercial at Zen Networks, mentions, “You can use one module for each server, for each application, and for each API”. He also adds, “With the solution you can put add-ons on it and it's very customizable. You can customize it easily. If you want something that the tool doesn't have, you can add it easily.”

Another reviewer, a Head Of Information Technology at a mining and metals company expresses, "The solution helps us save a lot of time on certain tasks. The dashboards of the solution are excellent. The stability is good.”

David G., Systems Engineer at a tech services company, states, “The solution has beneficial application analysis, is highly scalable, and has a great ROI.”
