Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is stable. For the cloud version, we require some installation platforms and we don't have a server with us right now. We require it from Amazon AWS. We can just plan and get the AWS server.""The product has a lot of new functionality.""AWS's security model, including IAM or security groups, has contributed to our organization's compliance. It manages authentication, permissions, and overall security posture, which helps us maintain compliance.""Its scalability is powerful. We are providing services for people to schedule an appointment for the vaccine and for COVID testing to see whether they are positive or negative. In one night, we can have 240,000 people in one minute to schedule an appointment. I am very happy with the scalability.""The pricing model is good. It's pay-as-you-go.""It has a lot of new features that make our lives easier in terms of what we want it to do in the house.""The payment structure is very good.""The services that we are using have frequent updates, at least twice a year. They provide a new version that has more capabilities or features that fit our process and procedures."

"In Lightsail, they simplified to do it in as few clicks as possible. So, around ten clicks, I have a virtual machine deployed.""The initial setup is pretty easy.""We use Amazon Lightsail for hosting security components in-house and AI modules.""The most valuable features are the usability and customer service."

Cons
"The dashboard can be improved a little bit to provide more information.""AWS should provide even more support and engagement to accelerate the adoption of new services and features.""While feasible, custom configuration will be more time consuming than standard.""There is a bit of a learning curve. That said, it's likely no different than learning any other cloud.""In some areas, more transparency on what is persistent towards novice users.""Amazon still has room for improvement in terms of being more mature on the monitoring side and in terms of the native capabilities. Amazon should get their services portfolio stronger on OEM-based workloads such as Microsoft and Oracle. There are a lot of areas that still do not have offerings, so there is room to grow. I would be happy if they bring more maturity to the monitoring capabilities and SaaS offerings. They are strong on Infrastructure as a Service, but they are not mature on SaaS.""Their support can be improved. In some cases, their support is not as proficient as it can be. They should be quicker at getting back.""Like anything, Amazon AWS has room for improvement, but it's not bad."

More Amazon AWS Cons →

"To improve, I feel the disk management is too basic. I can't easily partition the disk for the operating system. I have to follow the main configuration that is already set up in the template. To partition the disk, I would need to deploy the operating system first and then make changes, but it's not an ideal method. I would recommend improving the disk management.""When you need to add some custom rules to Amazon Lightsail, the auto scaling feature is a bit difficult.""I don't see this solution as enterprise-ready, for bigger companies like banks.""Currently, there is limited support available while installing or configuring it, and resources are primarily available through community-contributed articles."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Be careful with your consumption, especially when you are testing things. Costs can creep up on you relatively fast, without even noticing."
  • "AWS is scalable depending on your needs so pricing is dependant on what you use."
  • "It is decently priced. The competition is also bringing its own cloud offerings, such as from Oracle."
  • "When we shifted the load to AWS we paid a high cost as the mail stores were hosted on EBS. The storage cost drastically reduced after moving to S3."
  • "If you can plan capacity for one or three years, you can use the upfront payment option which allows you to save up to 50%."
  • "One of the best thing in Amazon AWS is you are billed for the service you use."
  • "We are reducing costs year-over-year."
  • "Much faster than other solutions at a super low cost."
  • More Amazon AWS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The services that it provides are good for the price."
  • "It's very cheap."
  • "The prices are better than EC2 machines, for instance, because they are simplified management, but it works well, and I am able to run everything that I need on it."
  • "Amazon Lightsail is a bit cheaper than Amazon EC2."

Amazon Web Services, Rackspace OpenStack, Microsoft Windows Azure and Google are the major cloud hosting and storage service providers. Athough Amazon is top of them and is oldest in cloud market, Rackspace, Microsoft and Google are giving tough competition to each other and to Amazon also for alluring IT customers. This article give brief history of these cloud hosting service providers and compares the cloud services provided by them. -- Amazon Web Services -- It's hard to find someone who doesn't agree that Amazon Web Services is the market leader in IaaS cloud computing. The company has one of the widest breadths of cloud services - including compute, storage, networking, databases, load balancers, applications and application development platforms all delivered as a cloud service. Amazon has dropped its prices 21 times since it debuted its cloud six years ago and fairly consistently fills whatever gaps it has in the size of virtual machine instances on its platform - the company recently rolled out new high-memory instances, for example. There are some cautions for Amazon though. Namely, its cloud has experienced three major outages in two years. One analyst, Jillian Mirandi of Technology Business Researcher, has suggested that continued outages could eventually start hindering businesses' willingness to invest in Amazon infrastructure. That sentiment gets to a larger point about AWS though - the service seems to be popular in the startup community, providing the IT… Read more →
