With its extension, I can quickly access login information without opening a new browser window
Pros and Cons
  • "I like Passportal's extensions. You can click the particular company you want and go through all the passwords and usernames associated with that company or the specific webpage you're on or their server or whatever. It's a whole lot faster."
  • "It goes down a little too often for me to recommend it to somebody else."

What is our primary use case?

I use Passportal for storing my passwords and different usernames. It works like IT Glue. You can store server information, Office 365 information, server Active Directory, etc. At my current job, we're not fully utilizing all of Passportal's features. We only use a few. We use a lot of the Passportal extensions you can get on your browser. The extensions show the little blue key and everything like that. I just use Passportal to access the tools I work on, like Office 365 Admin Center, Endpoint Manager, or Azure. That's what I'm mostly using as Level Two support.

What is most valuable?

I like Passportal's extensions. You can click the particular company you want and go through all the passwords and usernames associated with that company or the specific webpage you're on or their server or whatever. It's a whole lot faster, and I don't have to open up a new browser or use my bookmark or anything like that. I can click that blue key and go from there. I'm within their tenant or their directory within Active Directory in Azure. I can do what I need to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

During my first year at my previous job, we used Passportal for a few months. Then we went straight to IT Glue. So, I had more experience with that. But in this current role, I'm using Passportal. I've been working at this job for only two months now. I'm still learning the ins and outs. I'm also learning their ticketing system, automation platform, ConnectWise, etc.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Passportal's stability is okay. However, it goes down a little too often for me to recommend it to somebody else. I can only remember one or two outages with IT Glue. With Passportal, it gets frustrating when you need to reset a password for a client, and you have to put their global admin address in there because what you're doing requires admin privileges. But you can't get in there because Passportal isn't working, and the password might be a 48-character password.

If it's down for five minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes — that's too long. It's a real inconvenience. It doesn't happen all the time, but I've been at this job two months, and it's probably happened three or four times. I don't like this. I'm used to having it right at my fingertips. I need access now. With the influx of tickets coming in and time management, it needs to be like that.

How are customer service and support?

I've never used SolarWinds tech support. We never fully took advantage of that either. The only tech support we use outside of that whole IT Glue is for our ticketing system, which consists of Autotask and Datto. But I've only been at this job for two months.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In my previous IT job, we used IT Glue, but we're working with Passportal at my current job. Now, we're about to implement Key Vault. I'm going to really get my hands dirty on that. But, they had already been talking about switching to that when I was hired. We haven't jumped into it yet. But Key Vault is a Microsoft product, so it makes sense to keep everything Microsoft-related instead of going with a third party, like a one-stop shop.

What other advice do I have?

I'd give Passportal an eight out of 10. It's a good solution. If we fully utilized it, I would be a big fan. That's what we did with IT Glue. We used all of the categories, features, tabs, and everything else. I like Passportal, but I want the reliability to be there. When it's available, it's great. Aside from the reliability, I have no other problems with Passportal.

An open source and cloud agnostic solution
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of HashiCorp Vault is that it's an open source solution. Second, it's cloud agnostic, so it's very easy to maintain and control, which is why we prefer HashiCorp."
  • "I don't think there are any major improvements required—so far, so good. However, I think that having more training materials, such as videos, and documentation available would be helpful. I would prefer to have more videos available either on the official site or on YouTube."

What is our primary use case?

One of our primary use cases of HashiCorp Vault is security, to keep things secret. Instead of going for any particular cloud-based solution, this is cloud agnostic. We can go for any cloud solution when we have a hybrid solution in place, so Vault is always recommended for it.

This solution is cloud-based.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of HashiCorp Vault is that it's an open source solution. Second, it's cloud agnostic, so it's very easy to maintain and control, which is why we prefer HashiCorp.

What needs improvement?

I don't think there are any major improvements required—so far, so good. However, I think that having more training materials, such as videos, and documentation available would be helpful. I would prefer to have more videos available either on the official site or on YouTube.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for less than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable.

There are less than 10 people in our organization using HashiCorp Vault. We have plans to increase our usage.

How are customer service and support?

I have never contacted HashiCorp support directly because, so far, I haven't had to.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have also used similar cloud-based solutions. AWS and Azure are promoting their own solutions, which we have used before.

How was the initial setup?

The installation was very straightforward. It didn't take more than one hour. We did it ourselves and the documents are very clear and helpful, so it was fine. For deployment and maintenance, we had a team of five engineers.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution through an in-house team.

What other advice do I have?

I rate HashiCorp Vault a nine out of ten.

The goal is to move towards open source, so it's always good to have a cloud agnostic-based solution. This is why our organization is always goes with a hybrid solution, which doesn't depend on any single cloud provider—it's always good to look for cloud agnostic solutions. In that view, I think that HashiCorp solutions are very, very acceptable.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

An easy-to-setup solution with strong security features
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's most valuable features are its password management security and cloud firewall."
  • "The service could be improved incrementally to enhance programmatic access to the vault."

What is our primary use case?

My company resells the solution and operates similarly to SF Quality to provide consulting and managed service. Clients can access the solution through its operating system that is hosted on the Amazon cloud or via any web browser.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are its password management security and cloud firewall.

Our company and our customers value security. The business subscription model includes additional security features such as two-factor authentications with strong physical tokens. There are additional role-based access settings in the vault which can be linked to Okta or Azure ID for automated provisioning.

In addition, the cloud's firewall allows customers to stipulate which countries are permitted to log in.

What needs improvement?

The service could be improved incrementally to enhance programmatic access to the vault. I've been using the solution for a long time and have made suggestions over the years that are typically implemented.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for 12 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and very fast.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is really good.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward and takes ten minutes. We complete setup together with our clients on Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Certain configurations need to be set correctly to improve security. We provide training that addresses securing master passwords and then give our clients the keys to the kingdom.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's pricing model includes team, business, and enterprise. We always suggest the business subscription because it includes additional security features.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)
