What is our primary use case?
My main use case for
StarWind Virtual SAN is for high availability because we have infrastructure that we want to maintain high availability and reliability is key to this.
Regarding my main use case for StarWind Virtual SAN, I can say that we have multiple hosts, and if one host dies, the other one picks up. We don't want to have multiple individual servers, and this seemed to work very well for us. StarWind Virtual SAN is very flexible, and I can run it with all kinds of hardware; it doesn't have to be the same hardware. I can run it on different kinds of hardware, which is very important for us because that means we didn't have to spend money buying new hardware and trying to get matching hardware. This was useful for us.
How has it helped my organization?
StarWind Virtual SAN has positively impacted my organization by providing high availability. Before we used to have issues with Microsoft S2D, and we had a number of issues there with some downtimes here and there. Troubleshooting Microsoft S2D is not the easiest. But with StarWind Virtual SAN, we've maintained high availability, and we're talking about probably up to 98, 99% availability in the year. Most of the issues we have are actually nothing to do with the system itself; they're more related to our environment. Sometimes we have power losses or other environmental factors which may have caused some of the downtime.
This high availability from StarWind Virtual SAN has impacted my team and business operations positively. Productivity is definitely high, and satisfaction is higher because we don't have downtimes. We keep the business going, and as far as IT is concerned, we focus on other areas of IT to improve the business rather than running around trying to get the system running. The system is basically running itself 24/7, 365 days a year, and there's not much to do. We end up focusing on other more productive areas to improve the business.
What is most valuable?
The best features StarWind Virtual SAN offers are hardware flexibility, ease of use, and superb support.
The flexibility of StarWind Virtual SAN means I don't have to buy similar hardware. I could be using older hardware and it would still work. All I had to do is make sure that I have enough disk and fast storage. This prevented us from having to buy new hardware. The ease of use is evident because the interface is very easy. I can do whatever very easily, and there are no complications. Regarding support, we have very good support with them through the premium support tier. They monitor our system and let us know if something is not working well. They tell us proactively, and that way we've managed to maintain high availability of the infrastructure. They're very good and easy to work with.
What needs improvement?
I know that there is an aspect that can be improved in StarWind Virtual SAN, probably something to do with the storage. For instance, when there is a downtime, when a host goes down, it needs to sync the storage with the other live host, and it takes a bit of time. It doesn't stop productivity; it takes a bit of time. I think that might depend on the kinds of storage that you have and how fast they are, and also the links between the hosts. Maybe that's an area that they can look at to see if they can improve that, but I'm not sure if they have much control over that.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using StarWind Virtual SAN for probably at least five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
StarWind Virtual SAN is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
StarWind Virtual SAN's scalability is good. We have not needed to scale, but as far as I know, it can scale by adding more hosts to it. We are okay with the number of hosts that we have right now. We haven't found a need to scale out, but it has capabilities to scale out.
How are customer service and support?
I think the customer support for StarWind Virtual SAN is probably the best that we can possibly say. Compared to what we had before, trying to get Microsoft online to help us with S2D issues, you can't compare it. We have proactive support, which costs a bit extra money, but I think it's worth it. The system is continuously monitored, and any glitches or concerns are communicated to us before we even become aware of them. They let us know, and we coordinate with them if there is any need to involve them in fixing anything. They are involved and help us fix it, so it's been very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I previously used Microsoft S2D, and we switched because we had a lot of issues with it. Troubleshooting Microsoft S2D was quite difficult due to major issues, such as network drivers and storage drivers. We decided to switch back to StarWind Virtual SAN.
What was our ROI?
I haven't specifically taken any metrics regarding return on investment, but ballparking it, I think the time saved when we had the previous system compared to now is significant. I think we spend less time troubleshooting and dealing with system downtime. It seems to be more stable. Obviously, in terms of availability and the impact on the business itself and the loss of productivity that we've had with previous systems, StarWind Virtual SAN has definitely shown to be a good investment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for StarWind Virtual SAN is good. The licensing is reasonable and within our budget.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing StarWind Virtual SAN, I evaluated other options, including HP versions of HCIs and Nutanix, along with Everon. However, they were beyond our budget, so we decided to go with StarWind Virtual SAN, which did what we wanted and was within our budget.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for others looking into using StarWind Virtual SAN is to make sure they have their requirements all in place before they start looking for anything around
vSAN or HCIs. They should see if they can have a demo with the vendor. We had a demo with the vendor, went through their process, and had questions and answer sessions. Scalability wasn't a consideration for us since we just wanted to replicate what we had, but in some environments, it might be necessary to consider scalability. It's essential to have stable power; otherwise, issues with host sync can arise and can take some time. I would rate this review as a nine out of ten.
