What is the biggest difference between Cisco HyperFlex and Nutanix?

One of the most popular comparisons on IT Central Station is Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series vs Nutanix.

People like you are trying to decide which one is best for their company. Can you help them out?

What is the biggest difference between Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series and Nutanix? Which of these two solutions would you recommend to a colleague evaluating HCI solutions and why?

Thanks for helping your peers make the best decision!

Nutanix and Hyperflex HX are very similar in feature functions, design (except for ugly Cisco UCS add-on) so you are left with very minor techie knife fights to pick a winner. The customer that still thinks their old UCS was good, will stick with Cisco. A non-Cisco (Server) customer will likely see Cisco HCI as a new thing and therefore it could be not as floor tested and will look at vSAN or Nutanix. Cisco UCS mentality is servers without storage so HCI technically competes with UCS.

Cisco Hyperflex-
Pros:
- Turnkey HW and SW - Includes Storage, Servers, and Networking
- Can integrate with existing NAS and SAN for backend storage (DHCI)
- Strong Container Integration
- Mega-networking company funding it so no worries about losses (like Nutanix)

Cons:
- Lack of HW flexibility- only Cisco HW supported. They claim that it's integrated with UCS (blades) but blades have no storage so it's just networked in compute, not truly HCI, in fact, to bolt-on UCS is pretty ridiculous.
- Data Efficiency, only supports N+1 and N+2, no erasure coding.
- No Native Cloud DR integration.
- Underlying SW is SpringPath acquisition in late 2017 so relatively new to Cisco (they are late to this market).
- Claims “performance” but 1:10 (cache to HDD) with write-thru to other nodes (protective copy) before Ack is not going to be fast on writes.
- not sure of the cost of just the HX nodes (plus SW) but Cisco is never known to be low cost for UCS servers.

Nutanix-
Pros:
- Flexible Hardware options (they didn’t start out this way but now have moved off forcing their own HW).
- Data Efficiency- support of erasure coding across nodes.
- Manageability- Prism management and automation software are mature.

Cons:
- More Complex to deploy within a mixed environment.
- Dedupe and Compression is done at a fixed block of 16KB
- Overall Solution cost
- Can't seem to get profitable.

Nutanix provides the advantage of an alternative hypervisor that comes with the product. But its limitation is in the hardware choices that it runs on.

I think NCI does a pretty good job with security for its users. My organization was using a different solution before NCI, and we had to switch to this one because of pricing issues. We were worried this one might be less good because it was slightly less expensive, but we were proven wrong. It provides multi-cloud security for your applications and data and does that at an enterprise level. You can expect many benefits from it, and benefit from strong firewalls while using simple navigation. This product definitely protects our data and you can rely on it.

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is a very secure solution and ensures this through its Flow Network Security feature. The platform establishes a foundation through a Zero Trust strategy that is compatible with regulations and increases your own data's safety. It gives you services like user-centric identity and enhanced malware protection through which your data's safety from malware and malicious attacks is considerably increased. And the best part is you can enable Flow Network Security for free for two months and give it a try. We tried it like this after requesting a personalized demo, and have not disabled it since. If you are looking for a solution that protects both your applications and your company's data - NCI is the way to go.

NCI is one of the best out there. For any software, no matter how good it is, technical support makes it or breaks it for me. You may have an amazing product but if there is not anyone to help you use it, what can you do with it? Luckily, NCI's support is highly rated by customers for a reason. They are very helpful and always answer our inquiries in a timely manner. I have worked with competitor solutions of NCI and their support was not as responsive as NCI's. Every time my company has contacted the technical team of NCI, we were given detailed solutions, so I rate it very highly in this matter.

NCI's support may be the best technical support from any company that I have contacted, ever. We have not had many issues with the product, as it works quite well, and our specialists have learned its specifics by now. However, in a few instances, we needed support from NCI. Every time we contacted them, they explained to us in great detail what caused the issue, how to fix it, and how to potentially avoid it happening again. They are absolutely reliable and will either explain the issue themselves or connect you with a team member that specializes in your issue.
