What is our primary use case?
It's primarily used as an enterprise data warehouse solution.
What is most valuable?
I like the modeling and reporting capabilities.
Real-time processing isn't BW/4HANA's strongest point. We typically run batch jobs for this purpose. So, it's not good for real-time reporting.
BW/4HANA's modeling is quite intuitive because even those without technical database knowledge can model data from a business perspective. The tool can still be done without knowing the database functionalities of the data warehouse.
Even if someone doesn't understand the database functionalities, you can still model. It provides the functions in a way that even a less technical person can do the modeling. The tool facilitates modeling for non-technical users, ensuring good modeling results.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see more modern functionalities, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning components.
Integratiing BW/4HANA with AI tools is more like exporting data rather than true integration.
Integration means seamless integration, where data is stored in BW/4HANA and can be sent to other AI/ML tools. I consider it exporting data to a separate system, not true integration.
True integration involves a seamless workflow from one system to another system, where changes in one system impact the other positively. BW/4HANA stores data and sends it to AI/ML systems, but this isn't integration.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've worked with BW/4HANA for last 15 years.
I've worked extensively with SAP, particularly HANA, BW/4HANA, S/4HANA, SAC (SAP Analytics Cloud), and Business Objects for reporting.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's quite stable because it's been used for about thirty years. The first version came out in 1996. So, if I look at BW/4HANA or BW, it was the best product before the hyperscalers came along. Now that the cloud is here, it's not really a fair comparison anymore.
We have so many data platforms on AWS, Azure, and Google. But before that era, BW was the best. Now, things are changing, and SAP is also moving to hyperscalers, which is essentially the cloud.
So, the entire technology space is changing. Everything is going to the cloud, and all products have to re-establish themselves. In its previous version, BW/4HANA was quite good. But compared to today's hyperscalers, it's still seen as a bit of a traditional system. However, given the circumstances, it's very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
BW/4HANA is quite scalable. It supports both vertical and horizontal scaling effectively. I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.
It is best suited for enterprise-level companies. It's like an elephant, not easily maintained by smaller organizations.
How are customer service and support?
Previously, SAP's direct support was good, but it so no good now.
Previously, they had direct support from SAP, but now it seems they've contracted it out to another company. The support isn't as good anymore; it takes a few layers to get the best response.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In the previous era, it was the best product. If we compare the on-premise version with others like Oracle, IBM, or Microsoft, it's good. But compared to cloud solutions like Databricks and Snowflake, it falls short. They have more flexible pricing, and the cloud landscape is changing rapidly.
It's difficult to make a direct comparison because using BW/4HANA with SAP ERP is a different experience than using it with another ERP or without SAP altogether. There are many factors and metrics to consider for a full comparison.
How was the initial setup?
In terms of installation, it is not simple but structured. There are best practices to follow, making the setup manageable despite its complexity.
BW/4HANA is an on-premises solution. SAP is shifting towards SAP Datasphere, a cloud-based version.
SAP's private cloud can host on-premises versions, but they still call it cloud. So, it is very confusing phrasing for us.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Previously, BW (Business Warehouse) on HANA was priced together with the ERP, not separately. I think the latest version, BW/4HANA, is priced separately.
So it used to be one package, but now it's priced separately.
ERP is priced more than others, or at least on par with the top ones.
What other advice do I have?
Given the current technology space, I would rate it eight out of ten.
I would recommend to use it with SAP ERP system. If you have another ERP system or non-SAP system, I wouldn't recommend using it.
