What is our primary use case?
I have used features and capabilities of
Microsoft Foundry in multiple use cases. We have integrated a chatbot which leverages
Microsoft Foundry models. By chatbot, I mean it's not a basic LLM kind of thing. It's a customer assistant kind of solution which supports our basic RAG plus it interacts with the model. It's a multi-agent system which runs in the background and the chatbot integration happens and comes back with the results. That is where we used Microsoft Foundry for one of our projects.
We had multiple alternatives. We had Google Vertex. We followed some combinations with Python, LangChain, and LangGraph for agent orchestration. Vertex is a similar platform offering from Google, but whenever we build a hybrid custom solution, it took a lot of development effort, and Microsoft Foundry kind of reduced the effort. Since we are on the .NET platform, it makes a lot of sense and easiness to adopt all these tools.
Microsoft Foundry only has the Azure option, as per my understanding.
With Azure, one of our primary objectives was agentic AI development.
How has it helped my organization?
Microsoft Foundry is pretty good.
What is most valuable?
I basically use Microsoft Foundry mostly as an AI orchestrator. We build agents on top of this Microsoft Foundry platform. It gives me a lot of control. For governance, we have a lot of options there. Earlier, vision, voice, and speech were on different platforms. Now Microsoft Foundry has unified all of that, and we have easy integrations and provision to have this all under a single portal. That comes with a lot of governance and monitoring and control options. That is where we mostly use Microsoft Foundry platform.
I have been using Microsoft Foundry tools for quite a lot of time, especially Azure tools. With the introduction of Microsoft Foundry, one of the features I benefit from is that it is a uniform, unified platform for all these APIs. Earlier, the Vision API was separate, speech was separate, and language and OCR kind of capabilities were all part of the Azure family for quite a long time, but they were in separate bundles. Now Microsoft Foundry has unified all of this. That is one of the key areas which I felt. Other than that, the governance part, the monitoring parts, and the deployment parts have become much easier by this new Microsoft Foundry.
One of the areas which I felt may not be an improvement of the tool, but while integrating, one of the challenges we felt was that the community support was on a lower side. Of course, there was the enterprise support from Microsoft, but the primary source for a developer is the community. Comparing other platforms, as I mentioned, we have also active development in GCP and AWS as well. Compared to those platforms, the traction which Microsoft Foundry gets is a bit on a lower side on a community point, not from a support perspective. Of course, Microsoft comes with a very good support package, but that is kind of email communication or we need to share some details and wait for their response. Community usually gives almost instantaneous response. A better community would give Microsoft Foundry better visibility.
Microsoft Foundry shines because monitoring and governance is one of the major concerns whenever we are building an agentic AI platform. Microsoft actually did a very good job on the compliance and security side. One of the key areas which I felt was that everything was centrally monitored and there was a central control for all. We can have token level control, access security, IAM integration, and all was part of the central dashboard or central monitoring kind of an environment.
What needs improvement?
Whenever it comes to Microsoft support, I would say there will definitely be a delay from Microsoft side, but the quality of response is always on a higher side. I would definitely rate it a pretty good seven.
The response time, if there is any way they can shorten that, would be great.
Our procurement team and accounts is taking care of pricing areas, because they have some connections and negotiations are going on. On a very common end or whatever is available on the basic pricing, I think Microsoft tools are priced on a higher side compared to its competitors.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Microsoft Foundry since the start of my last project. It's almost two and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
As we are in India, we had an Azure outage a few months back. Other than that, everything was well and fine. I don't find any major issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We choose a pay as you go kind of package. Since it is in Azure, scaling was never a problem. There was very little downtime and issues. We literally didn't face any issues on scaling and downtime. I need to agree that it was not a full-scale adoption. We had a mix and match of tools, not only Microsoft Foundry. Obviously, the load will be distributed across these different platforms, but it is a sizable solution. I didn't feel any hiccups.
How are customer service and support?
We evaluated a few from
AWS offering, as AWS is offering the same services. We evaluated and we are using
GCP service also. When Microsoft offers something, the most interesting part which we felt is the ease of use, or how easy we can plug and play it. It's mostly a plug-and-play kind of environment, especially when our development and expertise lies with Microsoft stack.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Microsoft Foundry is pretty good.

In our organization, with our products, we use Microsoft Foundry.

I have worked on Microsoft Foundry.
What was our ROI?
If you ask me for a figure, I would say Microsoft Foundry helped us. I'm not pretty sure with a figure, but with the introduction of Microsoft Foundry and the models and the flexibility, I think it has been a simple plug and play or no-code, low-code kind of feasibility which a developer is getting. I obviously say it is very good, but I'm not sure how I can measure a figure with this.
Maybe comparing to other solutions, earlier we were building agent orchestrators with Python and LangChain. Compared to that, a minimum of 40 to 50% gain is there.
We did use different solutions for the same use cases.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
On the Microsoft stack, I have worked with the latest .NET frameworks, and on Cloud, of course, Azure platforms. On Google, I have worked along with GCP, almost all the tools in GCP, including a new Vertex for AI development, and almost all the tools in that stack.
It would be a very good option. I'd say eight.
What other advice do I have?
I have worked on Microsoft Foundry. I'm not an integrator kind of person. There was the provision to directly connect with our AD,
Azure AD. That itself was a game changer for us, because in 99% of enterprises which is using Windows, definitely has AD as part of their ecosystem. It was much easier for us to connect the AD credentials or AD policies which we were applying directly to Microsoft Foundry. The model execution or the agentic queries were much easier. Adding to that, something which added a lot of value is that there was RBAC, role-based access. I think that was a great feature which I didn't find in most other platforms. My overall rating for Microsoft Foundry is eight.
