NetVault Plus Reviews

My use cases for Quest NetVault involve one backup server, which has a Windows-based server with a lot of disks attached. On these disks, I have a virtual type library, and the system also has access to a tape robot with a physical tape library containing LPLT eight tape drives.

I find it difficult to answer what the most valuable feature of Quest NetVault is because I have not been using competitive software for decades. Ten years ago, the support for all kinds of different systems stood out, which made me decide to use this system. The main reason I decided to use Quest NetVault was the support for many different platforms.

Quest NetVault can improve in the area of Office 365 backups. Two years ago, I purchased the Office 365 plug-in or leased it for a year, and I have never been able to have a solid backup of Office 365 using Quest NetVault. I have resorted to a different solution specifically for Office 365 backups. It is not that it never works, but it fails so many times that it is not production-ready. On a weekly basis, I encounter problems and have to restart jobs or figure out what is wrong and then run it again. It simply needs to run as all the other Quest NetVault jobs do.

If tomorrow there was a brand new Quest NetVault and I had the option to add something to make my life easier, besides improving the Office 365 backup, I would like to see that Quest Co Store products should be a part of Quest NetVault. They work and interact, but I have the impression it should be one solution.

I have been using Quest NetVault for something like eight to ten years.

Stability-wise, Quest NetVault is a stable product for me, with the exception of Office 365.

I cannot really tell you about the scalability of Quest NetVault because the sizes I have been working with are always a few terabytes, which is small scale. I do not know what would happen if we scaled to petabytes, for example.

Regarding the support of Quest NetVault, I would rate their help a seven. They are really helpful, but as I mentioned, regarding Office 365, they were not able to solve my problems, or I suppose it is not just my problem.

When it came to the initial setup of Quest NetVault, it was not very easy, but I must say at that time, I had an engineer from Quest NetVault who came to install it, so from that sense, it was easy. However, a few years later, I replaced the backup server, and then I had to do it myself. Knowing what to look for really helped me in setting it up myself again the second time.

The deployment of Quest NetVault took about a day from start to finish to get it up and running.

We use a capacity license for Quest NetVault, so that is a very clear fixed amount for a fixed amount of terabytes. I cannot say the rate is cheap.

If you are considering using Quest NetVault for the first time, I would advise that compared to other products, it requires a little more human interaction. It has more of a Linux feel, with many small tools that do the job, while other products are more integrated as a whole. This makes it a little harder, but especially for someone with Linux or Unix knowledge, it is really clear to understand. At this time, no one besides myself is actually using Quest NetVault in my company. I would rate this review an 8.

I am using only the backup solution with QoreStor from NetVault. I use it for three types: SQL backup, VMware backup, and file server backup. Because I am set up on VMware, the functionality for VMware backup in NetVault Plus is most useful to me. I am talking about NetVault Plus's VMware function API plugin.

NetVault Plus's Unified Manager Console is useful. It is great, actually, and helps with the day-to-day activity for my end. It is easier for an IT manager like me.

I use the granular recovery feature, and it is actually helpful to restore even a single file from a large pool of files.

I think the main benefits that NetVault Plus provides for me would be time because time is essential and time is considered as money for companies like ours.

Actually, as I have implemented QoreStor along with NetVault Plus, the ratio of deduplication in NetVault Plus has really improved.

I think the reporting in NetVault Plus should be gotten more easily. That part should be more easy for the users.

For the last ten years, I have been working with NetVault Plus.

I will rate the stability for NetVault Plus at eight.

I will scale it at number seven for scalability, the ability to scale, and the ability to expand.

Technical support is great for NetVault Plus, but I think right now in India, they have introduced third-party support. They are providing it, but I think it is the first time I am using it, so I am not so confident about it right now.

Veeam is the product that I can compare to NetVault Plus. I think Veeam Backup is better for VMware backup.

The initial setup for NetVault Plus is simple.

I directly purchased it from Dell.

I will rate the pricing for the product at six. It could be cheaper.

I am still using Fortinet solutions. I am only using the firewall from Fortinet, not using any other product like FortiManager, FortiAuthenticator, or FortiSASI. I am also not using FortiManager for management purposes or for managed networks. I am using only FortiClient and FortiGate.

As a system administrator working with some other vendors, I am using different products. For remote access, for backup I am using NetVault Plus. I am using Microsoft Teams product for remote access.

I am satisfied with the current encryption protocols for data security.

When I purchased NetVault Plus, it was with Dell.

I would rate this review at eight overall.

My primary purpose for using NetVault Plus is file backup, only file backup.

We don't need granular backup right now because the betting system operates only in Turkey, and government policy is very important; file backup only is enough for us.

Not too much, not another backup style or strategy, just file backup is enough for my company.

We don't need encryption protocol impact because it is a closed system. It's not open or connected to the internet or intranet, just a physical and closed system is enough. Maybe encryption is generally very important, but not at this time for the company.

The strong point for me is the tape record feature.

The backup and recovery capabilities of NetVault Plus are very important for maintaining my business.

There's no positive impact that NetVault Plus has brought to my company; I mean, there's no particular benefit I have seen from using it. It's just used in general, and another colleague specifically selected NetVault Plus without any problem in Turkey area; everything is good enough for me. But specifically, with NetVault Plus, I don't see any impact.

I don't know of any improvements needed because everything is okay; I have no problems. NetVault Plus doesn't have a support team in my country; having a local contact in Turkey would be very useful for us.

I've been using it for six years in my organization.

In the one year I've been inside, we don't need any support; I would rate Quest support as eight.

I have only used this company. Before my current company, I used other backup solutions such as BM Media or Tivibu, and very important deduplication systems such as Veeam and Veritas backup solution, but my current working company doesn't need to use deduplication, only NetVault Plus and backup system.

It was simple to deploy NetVault Plus because my colleague in the company in Hungary, specifically Scientific Games, installed and sent us the complete system; we didn't install it ourselves or my Turkey colleague.

We were helped by my colleague during the installation.

One person was involved in the implementation.

Two people took part, but I don't have any idea about the installation process because we didn't install it. Another country and company installed and sent us the complete system and rack; I don't know how long it took or any details.

I don't know about the licensing cost for NetVault Plus because I've been working here for one and a half years; I think in three months we will renew the licensing model, and I will learn the new price then.

We are using NetVault Plus backup appliance.

The technology is supported, but we don't use NetVault Plus's deduplication technology.

NetVault Plus is the only solution we are currently using.

I'm an end user and not a partner of NetVault Plus.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate NetVault Plus an 8.

We have customers in the pharma industry. Our customers' main use cases for this backup are file system backup and different databases such as MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, and bare metal recovery.

Quest NetVault Plus is quite effective for managing backups across multiple systems because we don't need to log in to the backup server to manage it; it's web-based, so from any system in the network, you can log in and manage everything.

Quest NetVault Plus supports a wide range of databases such as MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, and SAP, offering extensive coverage. The recovery time when the system goes down is approximately 10 hours, so you can recover the system, and the recovery procedure is quite straightforward.

There's always scope for improvement with any backup software we discuss, whether it's Quest NetVault Plus or Backup Exec, and I don't think any software is 100% foolproof or satisfactory. Improvements should come, particularly in compatibility, backup performance, or better troubleshooting.

I have been working with Quest NetVault Plus or NetVault backup for approximately 15 years.

The scalability of this backup solution is good.

Our customers have not faced any challenges with Quest NetVault Plus.

The setup for Quest NetVault Plus is quite simple, and can be completed within one hour.

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the setup as nine.

Apart from Veritas, we're considering Quest NetVault Plus and the data protector.

The effective features are file system backup and bare metal recovery.

I find it effective because the recovery time when the system goes down is approximately 10 hours, so you can recover the system, and the recovery procedure is quite straightforward.

The solution is on-premises.

Deduplication is handled by their own product called Corestore, which is a software-based deduplication engine. The deduplication ratio is quite good, and the backup window reduces because of it.

To use Quest NetVault Plus backup, my advice is that the product is quite simple; there's no need to access or log in to the backup server, just log in from any system in the same network, and the configuration part is also quite simple.

I rate Quest NetVault Plus a nine out of ten.

We use the product for application backups and capturing snapshots.

The platform helps us with efficient QoreStor deduplication (DD) capabilities and configuration.

The product has valuable stability.

The product’s SQL backup plugin needs improvement. They should enable the server to connect to HPEx-specific clients to store data backup. Additionally, they should provide an option for LAN-free backup. It needs a feature to manage extensively large logs as well.

We have been using Quest NetVault for seven years.

I rate the product’s stability a nine out of ten.

We have 360 clients for Quest NetVault. It is highly scalable, and we plan to increase its usage. I rate its scalability a nine out of ten.

The technical support team takes a lot of time to resolve issues. One of our cases has been pending for three months. This particular area needs improvement.

The initial setup is difficult. It takes around two months to add up the routers. We used UniFi storage with one server for NetWall. Later, we installed Linux with Red Hat system. We had to set up routing for 11 containers, making it challenging to configure. It is very easy to use once configured. It requires around four to five executives to work on the deployment and maintenance. I rate the overall process an eight out of ten.

I rate Quest NetVault a nine out of ten. It is the best solution for weekly backup with VMware plugins.

I use the solution for backup and recovery. I map the data paths to the network. There is a client agent and a server agent. The client agent is added to the client PC, and the server agent is added to the server PC. We work for the pharma industry. We save the files that need to be converted to the mapping files as ZIP or EXE files. Then, we save it in Tape. The file is saved to the previous format after restoring the application. We have 56 plants in our organization. NetVault is used in all the plants.

The responses are okay. If a job is pending, the solution communicates it to us through emails.

The storage capacity is very low. The solution removes all the data in 15 days. We need the history for at least one or two months. I need the history whenever I run Tape. I need the details of the logs. If the details are not captured, it will impact our organization. The product doesn’t provide image backup. It is a big problem. It must be provided in future releases.

I have been using the solution for four years. I am using the latest version.

I rate the tool's stability a seven or eight out of ten.

We have three administrators in our organization. I rate the tool’s scalability a six out of ten. The scalability must be improved.

The support is good.

The tool is expensive. I rate the pricing an eight out of ten.

Quest NetVault is better than Veeam. However, Veeam provides image backup features.

The corporate backup team controls the product. It takes care of the troubleshooting and maintenance. I use the tool for client and server synchronization purposes only. I have recommended the solution to others. Since it has some drawbacks, people prefer Veeam. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.

My primary use case for Quest NetVault is backup. It has a universal backup. For example, you can take a backup like any backup software because it has its own deduplication algorithm. You can work right after the restoration process.

It has File and SQL backup, which is the main benefit for us.

It is a stable product.

It is scalable.

There is a good support team, and they will support you in finding the time to fix the problem and get the solution. For example, you need support to download the version you have already purchased.

The initial setup is a little complex. On a scale of one to ten, with ten being a piece of cake and one being the most difficult, I rate it a five.

I don’t remember the deployment process precisely, but the company did it.

I am currently working with version 12.

If you just started working with NetVault, make sure you have support. If you have a gap in support, minor problems might turn into big ones.

I would rate it a seven out of ten.

We have a hybrid environment where we are using Nutanix Xi for virtualization and virtual servers. We are performing backups of all of the servers using Quest NetVault.

NetVault is good for every kind of workload and the backup is very robust.

We are protecting everything that we have on our servers with it. This is very important for more than one reason. It used to be only in case of accidental deletion, where we could easily recover our data. However, with the arrival of ransomware attacks, it is more important to have a second or third copy of the data. This offers better protection against ransomware.

Using NetVault saves us a lot of time. Previously, our people were performing backups manually and it wasn't possible on a daily basis to verify that the backup had been done. However, after deploying this product, everything is done using a single interface. The operator can check the status of each backup, seeing whether the job was successful or there is an issue. When there are problems, the backup manager can assist in resolving them. Everything is fully automated and it saves a lot of time.

We back up almost 100 servers every day, and this was something that took too long to do manually. It was not possible on a daily basis. Also, we have five servers that are backed up on an incremental basis, which is something else that cannot be performed manually. The NetVault tool is crucial in our environment and it contains almost everything that a backup solution should have.

NetVault provides the latest tools and support for workloads like Acropolis, with virtual machines. Last year, I was searching for a backup solution that supported Nutanix Acropolis and I could not find one. However, after two or three months, I saw on the portal that one has now been provided. After that, I received a demonstration from Quest. With respect to support, there are no challenges and everything is fine.

NetVault is easy to deploy and use.

The interface is very user-friendly.

The reporting capabilities are very good.

In the next version, I would like to see support for the MongoDB database. As it is now, there is no component that works with it and we cannot back the data up using NetVault.

I have been working with Quest NetVault for eight years.

This is a robust solution and we have never had a failure.

This is a scalable solution. I would rate the scalability a nine or ten out of ten.

We are regularly backing up approximately 100 servers.

I am the backup manager so I am usually the one working on it, but there are two subordinates of mine that take care of backup and restore tasks when I am absent.

We are increasing the size of our infrastructure and we will be purchasing additional NetVault licenses for it.

Technical support from Quest is fine, although we don't require much in terms of support. When we have had to use it, support was very good. They gave us a complete solution with an understanding of what happened and how the issue was resolved. In the future, should a similar problem arise, we will be able to solve it ourselves.

We have other backup solutions including Veeam and Commvault.

The main difference between NetVault and Veeam is that Veeam is suited for a purely virtualized environment. We had started with a virtualized environment and slowly, we began to need the features from the physical servers.

With NetVault, it started with support for physical servers. As IT grew and VMs were introduced, the features grew to include support for those. This means that for hybrid workloads, where you have VMs, laptops, and physical servers, NetVault and Commvault are very good options. For purely virtualized environments, Veeam is the number one choice.

The deployment is easy and we completed it within one or two days.

We deployed it ourselves.

Our ROI is that over the past eight years, we have seen various threats and we have always been able to recover our servers successfully, without losing data.

The licensing can be capacity-based or component-based. We are in the process of trying to convert some of our server licenses, which are component-based, to capacity-based licenses.

When we purchased four licenses, we were given a very good price. However, it is still on the high side when compared to some other vendors.

My advice for anybody who is considering NetVault is that it is an enterprise-level grade solution. Some people consider it suitable for SMBs but in reality, it is enterprise-level and supports any kind of industry. It is complete in terms of its capability. It is very easy to use, it has good reporting, and you will not have any challenges with it.

In summary, this is a stable solution that creates robust backups, and the interface is very user-friendly. The main improvement that I would like to see is a plugin for MongoDB.

We use this product to do backups in VMware.

It is very important to us that NetVault supports complex hybrid data-center infrastructure because we rely on a stable backup program to be able to provide us with security and usable backups. That's exactly where NetVault comes in.

We are able to protect all of our applications and data across the company using only NetVault. This is very important to us, and NetVault does a really good job at it.

NetVault is really well integrated into the way that we back up our VMs.

The most valuable features are that the backup is done using snapshots, and it has a web interface, as opposed to having to install something on our laptops.

Having the web-based interface is important to us because we can access it from any computer in the network, rather than having it installed and available for use only on a specific one. 

We are unable to use the latest version due to hardware incompatibility. We need to upgrade our infrastructure to be able to run the latest version of NetVault.

With the version we are running, when Microsoft releases new updates, our backups get frozen and we have to restart them.

There are certain issues with the product that we report to Quest, and we get offered a workaround instead of a fix. There could be better interaction with the development teams, perhaps in terms of transparency.

I have been working with Quest NetVault since 2018, and it has been used within the company since before that.

Stability-wise, at the moment and with the version we've got, it's not that great. Every time Microsoft releases new updates, something happens to our backups and they get frozen over the weekend. When this happens, we have to restart them all over again.

We have a limited ability to scale up or down because of the infrastructure. We need to get a more compatible server in order to scale up. We are currently going through the process of revamping our infrastructure.

We use this product very extensively. It's used as the primary source of backup for our VM infrastructure and we may have plans to increase usage within the next six to twelve months.

There is only me and one of my colleagues who use the product, and we are both system administrators. We handle the maintenance that is required, including upgrades.

We do not subscribe to Quest Premier Support, where they are onsite with you. When we need to contact them, we either call the number or log a ticket online.

I would definitely rate their technical support a ten out of ten.

The architects that always deal with my tickets are very knowledgeable in the product and understand exactly what's going on. They're able to give us a fix, usually within the same day that they get the ticket. Sometimes, they get a lot of priority tickets, which they act on immediately. This means they're going over and above what it says in the service levels. So, they're exceeding the customers' expectations.

I have used and evaluated many similar solutions to NetVault in the past, and they were more complex. NetVault is a software-based solution running on the server, and it's the easier one that I have used.

This solution was installed before I joined the company. However, I have had to redo it a few times and have learned that it's not hard to install yourself.

My colleague and I are the system administrators and we are responsible for the maintenance. I do the updates and 30% of the troubleshooting. If there is a major problem that I can't fix, I'll send it to Quest.

Our previous license was for a three-year period but the next one coming is for 12 months. 

The price of our 12-month contract is approximately $1,500 AUD ($1,100 USD). It covers us for 295 virtual machines.

NetVault's component licensing enables us to buy only the features that we need. We've scaled it down to exactly what we require, which is more affordable for us. We recently changed our licensing model to allow us to back up an unlimited amount of data. Also, we're only using one NetVault plug-in, which means that we just need the VMware plug-in and we don't need the rest. Changing to this operational model is what has saved us money.

We are looking at other possible solutions with data graphs and infrastructure graphs, but that's coming in the future. We're also planning to upgrade NetVault because we're not running the latest version.

My advice for anybody who is considering NetVault is that if they're looking for something really easy to use, and they want to back up their VMware environment, then NetVault would be a wise choice. It's not complicated to set up, and it has great after-sales support. They really care about their customers.

The biggest lesson that I have learned from using NetVault is from a configurability point of view. This is a product that is easy to set up and troubleshoot, whereas there are more complex solutions out there that aren't, and require more digging and more research.
