Discontinuation of Hardware and limited firewalling capabilities
Overall, I would rate the solution a four out of ten. For UTM, I will not suggest Seqrite. But for EPS and antivirus, it is good. Cost-wise also and some features. The features wise also, it is good. And support is also good. We can get support on WhatsApp. So support-wise, it is also good.

Firewall management has become simpler and now provides real-time visibility and bandwidth control
The features I have found most valuable in Sophos UTM are that it is much easier to configure, I appreciate the reporting side of it, and the rules are very straightforward to work with. Sophos UTM's real-time insights into network health help my organization because I get real-time reports on what is happening on my network, what is trying to access me, the destination, and all that. I can then be reactive or proactive, and for zero-day, I think it is beneficial because it can learn what my network does. If anything goes outside what it expects, it sends a report on Sophos Central, so I find zero-day makes my work a bit easier. The use of Sophos UTM's intuitive management console has impacted my security policy enforcement in that it is much easier to configure; I configure with information rather than with presumptions.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has an MDM solution."
"The pricing and licensing are both good and better than Sophos's competitors, which is why we went with the product."
"Nothing out of the ordinary these days, but the fact Sophos has such a big name and good support was a big plus for the client who already had a relationship with Sophos support."
"Sophos UTM is a comprehensive product that does the job that it should."
"Sophos UTM is the simplest of these products to setup."
"Sophos UTM provides security for our network here and access through a VPN connection for our remote users."
"The IT Admin or IT Security in any organization would like to have Sophos UTM because it is full of all the features you think about for enterprise."
"Sophos UTM's best feature is synchronized security."
"We use Sophos UTM for multi-site VPN, quarantine, sandboxing, and IPF, and it blocks malware and other unauthorized apps."

Cons

"This solution is not accurate. Sometimes, the switches got hung. So sometimes, whatever policies we have deployed were not working properly."
"We would be happy with fewer new features over the same time, but with more stable updates!"
"If you enable the intrusion prevention option in the firewall any Wordpress deployments on a Plesk server behind the firewall slows down to a crawl, and there is no fix yet."
"The reporting system needs to allow for customizations because many reports do not include details that we expect."
"Sophos UTM's firewall is a bit weak, and some of its features lack depth compared to other products like F5."
"Anti-phishing functionality should be improved."
"While the product was originally with Astaro the low end (1xx) units had serious reliability issues and support was extremely challenging to engage with."
"The price is an issue to consider for improvement."
"The reporting system needs to allow for customizations because many reports do not include details that we expect."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I would recommend to follow Sophos’ sizing guidelines for choosing which license and model to use. Sophos has their own way of going about this and supplies partners with all the information required. If you follow their documentation and guidelines, there should be zero questions about licensing and sizing."
"We pay for the service on a yearly basis. The last time we paid was in June, for a year. At the time, it was about $20,000."
"Both the technical and cost aspects are feasible since it is possible to obtain and use the device as a PnP solution."
"The solution is affordable compared to others, such as FortiGate. The price is important."
"I rate the product's price a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"Sophos UTM has very reasonable pricing."
"Although Sophos UTM is a good product, other products have more flexibility with their pricing. It is a very fine product, but when someone wants more relaxed pricing or more leverage in pricing, Sophos is more rigid."
"We originally purchased the solution through the AWS Marketplace. I started my proof of concept doing pay-as-you-go, then moved to a VAR for a 'Bring Your Own Licence' (BYOL) licensing model. The BYOL license still requires you to accept the terms of the AWS Marketplace to deploy."

Sophos UTM vs. Fortinet FortiGate
I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main…
