An Easy to use tool for brainstorming and planning, compatible with Microsoft Project
This solution works well enough. One can always dream up certain things that may or may not be worth implementing in a piece of software because some other people might have some other better priorities that make more sense. But I would say for what I need it to do, I'm okay. My advice to others is to get it, and use it! It's very good and useful. I am pretty sure that the functionality it has today has more modern methodologies than what I use, but for me, it has been very useful and I have kept using it all of this time. I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Created detailed rack and network diagrams that streamline documentation and collaboration
For creating diagrams, I definitely use Visio for HLD, LLD, and traffic flow diagrams. Apart from Visio, I use Jira only if the customer specifically requests it; otherwise, I do not use an in-house version of Jira in my organization. One of the good features of using the Microsoft umbrella product is that if I create a big diagram and then work on the HLD or LLD in Word, I can select everything from Visio and paste it as an image without needing to resize it, which streamlines the process of creating documentation for customers. The main benefits Visio provides me include simplifying processes, saving time on manual work with diagram creation, and delivering a clean architecture, whether it is network architecture or application flow. I have created diagrams for AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises data centers, including rack elevation diagrams and organization charts. Modifications can be made easily and reflected immediately, and I can create PNG images to share with the executive team.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"My advice to others is to get it, and use it! It's very good and useful."
"The metadata map provides operational navigation to complete business processes."
"The most valuable feature is being able to export to Microsoft Project."
"Simple to use and very intuitive."
"Instead of using other drawing tools, I'd say that this one is likely the best option."
"I think the best part of Visio is that you can import drawings very well into Microsoft Word."
"The application makes plotting and flowcharting very easy and very user-friendly."
"Visio makes it easier than with other tools to do such tasks as changing things or coming up with one's own visual style for presentation purposes."
"Putting details into the process flow and being able to link other objects into the diagrams are very helpful features."
"The initial setup is pretty straightforward."
"What I like the most is the simplicity and ease of usage."

Cons

"The SQL based database connectivity and data access for analysis and reporting, both need some attention."
"I don't know what the pricing is at now, but at the time the price hike upset me to the point that I stopped upgrading."
"Since I have been using such an old version, most of the improvements have already been made, but I would suggest moving forward with the times and creating a cloud-based solution for universal access."
"In terms of enterprise architecture, Visio is limited."
"The product's installation phase can be a difficult process if you don't have the deployment script with you since it is very important to know what you are doing when you are dealing with the setup process."
"It is not flexible in terms of functions and modeling deliverables. When you speak of processes, the program has to describe the activities and the deliverables. You have to tell your robots how to deal with and input something, and you should have something more flexible from this point of view."
"The tools panel at the top, et cetera, seems really complicated."
"I personally wouldn't buy Visio even if it were 10 times cheaper because I only use it at work for diagram modeling; it's not a unique product anymore."
"Visio should be object-oriented to enable the reusability of objects across different models."
"But, for beginners, or for anyone who wants to prepare a more informative diagram, I'm not sure if Visio is a very helpful tool."
"If we were to say that stable was equal to 100 and unstable was equal to zero, I would give Visio a 50 percent."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price was very good in the beginning, then the price increased from USD $99.00 to USD $249.00, then I stopped upgrading because what I needed was already there."
"The product is inexpensive if you already have Microsoft products in your environment. The license encompasses all the required services."
"While I don't recall the exact price I do recall that it was quite high."
"The licensing process is actually a breeze. Simply buy the license and download it from Microsoft, enter the license key in Visio to activate the software, and you're done."
"Cloud-based tools are always cheaper since they are subscription-based. I use the on-premises version of Visio hence the price is quite expensive. However, I believe that the cloud version of Visio may not be as expensive as the on-premises version."
"I give the cost of Visio a five out of ten."
"There is a licensing fee, but it is fairly priced."
"My company does pay toward the licensing costs of Visio. It is a cheap product based on my experience, and since I purchased Visio for my own use."
"The pricing is reasonable and I would rate it 6 out of 10."
