Advanced threat scanning has strengthened endpoint security but reporting and hardware reliability still need improvement
The multi-scanning engines feature helps to manage threats effectively.MetaDefender Drive has the same multi-scanning platform as the Opswat endpoint and MFP. The difference is that you will not get as many antimalware engines compared to other solutions, but the main functionality of MetaDefender Drive is to detect threats from your endpoint.Content Disarm and Reconstruction (CDR) works on endpoints, but people typically do not use it for data at rest since the data is not in transit and remains on the asset. It is difficult to define a policy or determine what to sanitize and what not to sanitize. Overall, MetaDefender Drive is widely used for threat prevention with multi-scanning and vulnerability scanning.

Overall, I would evaluate the Microsoft support level that I receive at probably about a seven, but that depends on the day. It has been spotty. We have had issues where the urgency level of the Microsoft support is not as high as ours, especially during a data breach or potential data breach situation. We have had issues with some of the offshore support being lackluster. One specific thing that comes to mind is we were on a support call with our CISO on the call, and the Microsoft agent, who did not actually work for Microsoft, is one of the vendors that Microsoft uses for support, said, "Just to set expectations, my lunch break is in an hour and I am going to go away then." For us, it was already ten o'clock at night and we had been working on this for a couple of hours, trying to get a security engineer on with us. For him to tell us that he was going to go away and have lunch, it was, "Okay, but go find somebody else if you need to." It was just the lackluster approach, and it seemed like he did not really care. We seem to get a lot of this when we get non-Microsoft support. I can identify areas for improvement with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, as it is kind of a convoluted mess to try to take care of false positives. Especially when they have been identified as false positives but they keep going off over and over again. It is great for my pocketbook because it generates a lot of on-call action, but I would really prefer more sleep at two o'clock in the morning than dealing with false positives. I would say that the unified portal for managing Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is suitable for both teams as they are all in there. It would be great if they would stop moving things around and renaming things, which makes sense. The new XDR portal is pretty nice. Being able to have it central again inside of the regular Security Center without having to open up two windows is helpful. Overall, I think it is pretty good. There is always going to be something that could be improved, such as alerting and the ability to modify alerts would be a little bit helpful to have. Being able to add more data into the alerts and turn off alerts that are not as useful would be beneficial. It is hard to say what the quantitative impact the security exposure management feature has had on our company's security, because a lot of it is kind of subjective. I think we are sitting at around a fifty percent score still, and a lot of it is just kind of unusual circumstances that we cannot really implement without breaking the organization.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"MetaDefender Drive is beneficial for organizations where vendors need to be prevented from supply chain attacks."
"It doesn't cause the slowness of the system, which is one of the reasons why I like it."
"The biggest benefit to Windows Defender is that it is built-in to the operating system by Microsoft."
"The technical support from Microsoft is very good. We are part of the Microsoft Suite, and from being part of this we have consistent news regarding Microsoft Defender for Endpoint."
"The patch updates and version updates are very good. Those happen on an automated basis whenever I'm connecting to the organization network, either through LAN or through the VPN."
"In terms of the installation, ease of use, and user interface, Defender has been great so far."
"Defender should be fine for home use. It has all the basic functionality you need. I can't speak to how well it works as an enterprise solution because I'm not in the space."
"The feature I appreciate most about Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is the portal, being able to see everything rolling up into the portal for a total overview of how the organization looks for all the managed endpoints."
"Defender for Endpoint has significantly reduced our SOC team's workload by automating threat detection and response, allowing them to focus on other critical projects."

Cons

"MetaDefender Drive is not particularly stable."
"Its detection is not as quick. There should also be more frequent updates."
"What I think can be improved on Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is that the whitelisting abilities are pitiful, and the understanding of how you go about doing that by the support techs that you speak with is really bad, so that I think is an area where Microsoft Defender for Endpoint needs improvement; the understanding and support of that and what actually works is pretty buggy."
"Monitoring can always be better, onboarding can be a little bit faster, log collection could be easier, they could streamline the dashboard. They could maybe split it up into different workspaces and have the ability to segment groups a little bit more."
"If they integrate with the EDR then it will benefit this solution."
"Its user interface can be improved; currently, in the console, you have to dig down through many different layers to get to specific functionality instead of having it all on the surface."
"I would just like them to have more consistency, and that's a comment that's across the board with Microsoft. They change things a lot."
"This solution is not secure, which is why I have moved to Linux."
"The management console is something that can be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Microsoft Defender ATP is expensive."
"The normal, standalone model, is not expensive, but the enterprise model that includes the bundle with email and some web protection, is a bit more expensive."
"Licensing options vary. Some customers buy it as an enterprise agreement and pay yearly. Others buy it as a CSP, so they pay per month. It completely depends on the customer's needs."
"The price is fair for the features Microsoft delivers. If you want tailor-made features, you have to mix different licenses. It isn't straightforward."
"There is no license needed, the solution comes with Microsoft Windows."
"It isn't cheap, but it's reasonable and fair."
"I pay for it through the Windows Professional or Standard license. It is a one-time cost for me, and I use the same license."
"We are required to pay for the data we ingest, and increasing the data amount incurs additional expenses."
