The solution reduced our operational expenditures and is able to identify points before we even noticed them
The management interface seems to be designed for high-resolution screens. Somebody with a smaller-resolution screen might not like the web interface. I run a 4K monitor on it, so everything fits on the screen. With a lower resolution like 1080, you need to scroll a lot. Everything is in smaller windows. It doesn't seem to be designed for smaller screens. When I change the resolution to 1080, I only see half of what I would on my big 4K monitor. It would be annoying to have to scroll to see the flow chart. They have a flow chart that goes top to bottom like a tree. On a lower resolution, it might be nice if that scrolls horizontally because it's long, narrow, and tall. It's only three icons wide, but it's 15 icons tall. I think it would be helpful to have the ability to change that for a smaller screen and customize the widget.

Cost visibility has improved and ongoing usage reveals several areas that still need refinement
One thing about Vantage Cloud Cost Platform is that some of the data they need to report includes custom routes. Vantage Cloud Cost Platform should also provide integration for monitoring the data. A more generic API would be needed and lower cost with Vantage Cloud Cost Platform, as right now it is costing me a few dollars a day without any usage. If the hit to the APIs can be reduced and you get a small amount, that should be sufficient. There are many improvements that need to be made, and that is why I gave a rating of six and not ten, as it is a long path for the business. Currently, it is on the POC part with Vantage Cloud Cost Platform. In terms of money, it offers consolidated billing and ensures that what we are exactly spending is included, so it helps to save money. However, since I have not been able to use it for long, I cannot share the exact number or percentage. I am using Vantage Cloud Cost Platform as it offers free integration till 100K users. Right now, except for the cost, they are billing in other services.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like the analytics that help us optimize compatibility. Whereas Azure Advisor tells us what we have to do, Turbonomic has automation which actually does those things. That means we don't have to be present to get them done and simplifies our IT engineers' jobs."
"In the first month, we ran this as a POC, and it saved us over 5k a month in costs by implementing its recommendations."
"The solution has a good optimization feature."
"The storage load balancing has helped us avoid LUNs going full."
"Great product and we use it extensively, from setting up VMturbo to load balance our VM's across a cluster, implementing right sizing recommendations, policy rules, memory/storage and CPU trends and plans for future projections in order to determine how we can reduce our hardware and licensing footprints."
"Customer Service: Excellent. Technical Support: Excellent."
"The auto resource leveling on my hyper-v cluster saves my staff so much time on monitoring and performance tuning."
"Turbonomic helps me maintain a lean operations team; what used to take half my day now is automated, and ROI on this is a no-brainer."
"I was able to reduce my costs by approximately 50% and understand where the costing is since I started using Vantage Cloud Cost Platform."

Cons

"The reporting module has very big potential, but really lacks predefined reports for all kinds of purposes."
"I am not a giant fan of the new interface. I still use the older interface."
"The interface could be a little cleaner and navigation a little easier."
"Some of the previous versions have had some issues with the stability, but the latest versions, >=5.7, seems to have fixed this."
"The management interface seems to be designed for high-resolution screens. Somebody with a smaller-resolution screen might not like the web interface."
"Would like some better canned reports allowing for average utilization of VMs in the environment during a defined range of hours."
"Built-in, context-sensitive Help would be useful."
"It is an expensive product so we have only licenced the critical hosts in production."
"A more generic API would be needed and lower cost with Vantage Cloud Cost Platform, as right now it is costing me a few dollars a day without any usage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"IBM Turbonomic is an investment that we believe will deliver positive returns."
"If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
"I have not seen Turbonomic's new pricing since IBM purchased it. When we were looking at it in my previous company before IBM's purchase, it was compatible with other tools."
"It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
"It is an endpoint type license, which is fine. It is not overly expensive."
"We see ROI in extended support agreements (ESA) for old software. Migration activities seem to be where Turbonomic has really benefited us the most. It's one click and done. We have new machines ready to go with Turbonomic, which are properly sized instead of somebody sitting there with a spreadsheet and guessing. So, my return on investment would certainly be on currency, from a software and hardware perspective."
"I know there have been some issues with the billing, when the numbers were first proposed, as to how much we would save. There was a huge miscommunication on our part. Turbonomic was led to believe that we could optimize our AWS footprint, because we didn't know we couldn't. So, we were promised savings of $750,000. Then, when we came to implement Turbonomic, the developers in AWS said, "Absolutely not. You're not putting that in our environment. We can't scale down anything because they coded it." Our AWS environment is a legacy environment. It has all these old applications, where all the developers who have made it are no longer with the company. Those applications generate a ton of money for us. So, if one breaks, we are really in trouble and they didn't want to have to deal with an environment that was changing and couldn't be supported. That number went from $750,000 to about $450,000. However, that wasn't Turbonomic's fault."
"When we have expanded our licensing, it has always been easy to make an ROI-based decision. So, it's reasonably priced. We would like to have it cheaper, but we get more benefit from it than we pay for it. At the end of the day, that's all you can hope for."
