We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution is mostly stable.""IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products.""The customization and the ability to backup across all platforms are the most valuable features.""I've had no problems with the stability of this solution.""SPIR is Instant Recovery for Spectrum Protect. It sends snapshots using space efficiently and blocking backups to the Spectrum Protect server. It provisions the snapshot from the backup server to the same or new server near instantly.""Their GUI has improved quite a bit. It's made the solution a lot simpler and less complex.""We have been using it for several years, and it is quite reliable and predictable. We are quite comfortable with this solution. They're coming up with new features as well. It has good scalability, and it provides good integrations with business-critical applications or databases, such as SAP HANA. It works as expected, and we don't see any issues.""IBM support is friendly, knowledgeable, and they always respond quickly. They've always been able to find the cause of my problem."

"It is flexible.""The updates are problem-free, so we can keep Nakivo up to date on the server and NAS too.""This product has helped to centralize backups and made it easy to recover data.""This product has a very clean and intuitive GUI.""It uses all the bandwidth available if not limited and backs up entire servers with all data about four times faster than Windows Server Backup and EaseUS TODO Backup.""Nakivo's reporting features have helped a lot. They give my boss high visibility into what's going on, which is crucial because we had a data breach in the past where we lost about 12 years of data. That's why we bought several appliances, and we replicate the same backup twice a day to three different depositories.""They reply immediately to any query raised from us as a technician or consultant and they know the pulse of the market and keep updating the features in such a big way.""For my purpose, I find VM Backup to be the most useful, as it gives me the ability to create image-based, incremental backups of VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix AHV VMs."

Cons
"The licensing isn't very clear. They should work to simply or clarify the cost structure.""Replication of data could be more user friendly.""The installation process could be simplified.""Its price can be better. It is very expensive. Its interface is very old and not user friendly. They can improve its interface. Their support can also be better. My clients are not very satisfied with the support because they are not really quick.""I find the solution somewhat difficult to use with virtual environments or VMware.""IBM Spectrum Protect does have a lot of the features that we need, but I think they need to improve their backup virtualization and backup for container.""Its management part can be better and simplified. It is kind of a beast as compared to Commvault or Veeam, but they are more user-friendly. They are also easier to learn, whereas Spectrum Protect definitely takes time. They should simplify it. Our teams are pretty comfortable with it because we have been using it for a long time, but from the perspective of a new user who is evaluating or using this solution, it is definitely more complex in terms of manageability. Its monitoring could be improved so that it can even monitor the jobs that are scheduled by external schedulers. There are situations where a database team might decide to use their own schedulers, but currently, Spectrum Protect is not able to catch those jobs in the Operation Manager console.""I think Spectrum Protect's interface is not so user-friendly, but the interface is not so friendly. Some of the functions are too complicated. I prefer a simpler solution."

"Updating VM Tools on a replicated VM could be better.""The interface can be a little clunky at times.""More statistic options would be a great feature.""From our experience, the main factor that could be improved is adding more cloud services that are supported as a backup repository.""While the solution provides mostly what we need, it would be ideal if there were some additional feature capabilities for the API.""The first implementation is a bit difficult but once is up and running is rock solid and extremely easy to manage.""It would be interesting if it were possible to integrate a mobile app to monitor the system in real-time.""I would like to have a built-in SNMP client, which is important if we want to monitor it using Zabbix, Nagios, or another monitoring solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "I don't have an idea about the pricing. They send that over to someone else, but I know that one of the issues they had was the licensing costs. I don't think they were happy with how they were charged."
