We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The iSCSI protocol is quite simple to configure.""The management and monitoring have been very easy since the solution's dashboard is very simple and user-friendly.""The fact that we can expand our storage and add on to our compute nodes easily and how amazing the StarWind technical support team is really adding value to our purchase.""The backup is readily available for use, and the restoration process is easy.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""StarWind vSAN is easy to deploy and administer.""The StarWind tech support is extremely helpful, especially during the initial setup.""The product's core feature of virtualizing our storage is by far the most valuable."

"HPE Hyper Converged is stable.""The solution has many good features.""The provisioning is very fast. It’s not a problem for us to achieve the goals of the client.""What I really like about this program, is that it needs little space and it works really fast, so it saves us time.""It is a scalable solution.""Hyper Converge is easier to manage and performs better than traditional infrastructure.""One of the solution's strong points is the deduplication capabilities of SimpliVity.""Hyper-convergence is the most valuable aspect of the solution. We can avoid downtime when there's maintenance or updates needed. Also, we have homogenous hardware, so we have a lot of trust in the solution's reliability."

"It is stable and scalable.""I like that you can add other types of services.""The consolidation of the management in one control point is the most valuable. The whole infrastructure management is consolidated in just one console point. The documentation is also pretty good.""The size of the hardware is what we need because it is very good for small configurations.""The most useful feature is the solution's automation in terms of how we are able to spin up a certain workload in real-time when we are doing R&D.""Both the scalability and stability of this solution are excellent."

Cons
"I would like them to invest time in reducing the complexity of the startup and shutdown procedure.""I'd love to see native export of metrics (via Prometheus or something of that nature) to allow us to get more metrics available on our existing dashboard software.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one.""It would be helpful to have a little more insight into what kind of performance the VSAN cluster is utilizing; something that would be more proactive on our side, versus their ProActive Support.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows.""Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk.""In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Could be more secure and more economical.""One of the things that can be improved is that today, is supporting VMware, maybe as a hypervisor. But it would be good to have an open kind of platform for other hypervisors, maybe. Like Nutanix is doing, it's very open.""We have faced some challenges when upgrading. With Hyper Converged, you have to fully upgrade because there are no incremental upgrades available in this solution. For example, let's say we have two nodes. If we want to upgrade storage, we also need to upgrade computing. That means a full upgrade EME.""Some improvement is required in the availability of the data and performance. The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower.""The software version on the HC380s we are using is version 1. It does not support spanned vCenter which we use since we have multiple sites.""The solution needs to add a module or plugin of vCenter for clear monitoring and insights.""The storage efficiency is weak and needs to be improved.""The solution would be better served if it integrated with other solutions better."

More HPE Hyper Converged Cons →

"It is not user-friendly, and it is very difficult to operate. You have to have a deep understanding of the technical details of the infrastructure to implement it. When you compare it with VMware, it is totally different because the graphical user interface is not that easy to understand. It is not intuitive. To use it, you have to read a lot of documentation and even understand what is going on behind the solution. It is not for someone who has a little bit of knowledge. Currently, it is too complex. I need something that is easy to implement. It should have a basic configuration as well as a complex configuration.""The main issue is the initial investment. It is an expensive product, and it should be cheaper. It should also be easier to use and manage. The professional service for this solution is quite complex and expensive.""This product is not so stable. Maybe it is just not mature enough in its development.""It should be more user-friendly, in my opinion.""The cloud deployment could be improved.""The licensing policy needs to be improved. They have a licensing policy based on the number of CPU sockets. Nowadays what has happened is that the license they are trying to move is based on the number of CPU cores. With the advancement in technology there are now more cores in a single CPU. It's been very challenging in terms of managing the license around everything. Today we have a processor with 24 and 32 cores on the same physical CPU."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
  • "With this solution, I buy everything together, pre-packaged, pre-installed, and in just 15 minutes, it's installed."
  • "The price per value compared to other solutions, like Nutanix and SimpliVity. (We made the deal before approval of HPE SimpliVity deal)."
  • "Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
  • "It is an expensive solution, however. If they could adjust the pricing, that would be helpful."
  • "The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
  • "The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."

  • "Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure is an open-sourced, low-cost solution with full features."
  • "It is quite pricey."
