We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is that you can use it with all deployment models.""The deduplication is useful for us because we don't have that much money for our lab infrastructure. Deduplication means we have more storage available. And the IOPS are really fast.""In terms of performance and ability, the product can stand up against its competitors since the solution offers two controller systems to users.""There are no significant challenges in terms of scalability, and it can accommodate larger storage capacities compared to other storage solutions.""I am happy about the storage system and availability.""The most valuable features are external storage virtualization and the 100 percent data guaranteed availability.""The active-active option seemed to be working well and overall, it was a solid product.""Its resilience is the most valuable."

"As it spreads, a chuck of 1MB across the board means using all available spindles on the backend.""Installation is amazingly easy.""Very easy to produce reporting data (Snaps). Very easy and fast for provisioning devices and Remote mirroring.""Hands down, this is the easiest storage platform on the market to manage.""The performance and robustness of the systems are very good.""IBM XIV's most valuable features are NVME, especially when it comes to de-duplication, compression, and responsiveness."

Cons
"At the moment, I don't see any room for improvement in Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series because my experience with the product is very good. The software is okay and you can manage the storage well. What I'd like to see in the next release of Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series is for it to be a real NAS solution because right now, you need to use a Hitachi converter called HNAS which makes the process a little bit more expensive. In my opinion, Hitachi should look into the possibility of unifying the HNAS into full storage, meaning that the HNAS should be integrated into the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series.""The distributor needs more knowledgeable resources for technical support. It would be better to connect directly to the vendor in case of queries.""The complex setup phase is an area where improvements are needed.""We've only faced some minor issues. For example, the documentation of some features isn't as detailed as we would like.""For mission critical issues the performance is low.""Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform needs to improve its scalability options where there are a few shortcomings.""In the next version I would like to see additional features like artificial intelligence and an increase in the amount of data it can store.""In terms of new features, I would be interested to see deduplication added in their next release."

"This product was not a good fit for our organization as we have a ton of latency sensitive applications and XIV was not able to keep up with IO + latency demand.""I would rather have a web GUI served directly from the unit, and a CLI accessible directly through SSH.""I encountered stability (performance) issues during enclosure or disk rebuild. Also some power supply issues due to malfunctions of circuits. Sometimes "internal" Snap sessions hang and consume pool capacity.""IBM XIV's scalability is adequate for our requirements, but because it's modular, you can't scale to larger requirements.""Until the drive is replaced, the pool_resizing is locked.""The change form synchronous mirroring to asynchronous (and vice versa) without reconfiguration from scratch would be helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing we get is very competitive when compared to other vendors. Hitachi is working on their licensing model and it is improving but can be irksome when many different items are not bundled or enterprise size."
  • "Our main issue with the Hitachi G-Series is what we consider to be an archaic software licensing scheme and high maintenance costs."
  • "It is a little expensive."
  • "I would like to see better pricing and more discounts."
  • "Pricing could be better, because the cost is very high."
  • "This solution is cheaper than Dell EMC VMAX. When you are looking for a high-end solution, price matters, but availability and stability are more important than the price."
  • "This is an expensive solution."
  • "When you are looking for high-end solutions such as this, price is less important than stability and availability."

  • "If you are going to use the product behind an SVC, IBM will price the units lower, since you are likely not to use any of the advanced copy services."
  • "No-license-required policy, unlike others where you need a license for everything. Just pay once and forget about licenses."
  • "Licensing is straightforward."
  • "We have a five-year total cost of ownership where we pay an initial amount and then annually for maintenance."
