Reliable and secure storage solution supports core banking operations effectively
The replication technology that Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform uses is quite older, and the replication methodology they employ for data between the data center and the production and standby database shows no significant improvement in that particular field. With respect to storage administration, I'd like to see more clarity on the encryption side; data being stored in an encrypted manner is essential, but the customer or end-user doesn't understand which encryption is being used and doesn't have a direct view stating that their data is encrypted using AES 256 or DES, or whatever standard they follow. This lack of transparency may not be acceptable during audits.

Good value for money but issues with modular scaling
IBM XIV's most valuable features are NVME, especially when it comes to de-duplication, compression, and responsiveness I've been using IBM XIV for two and a half years. IBM XIV is stable. IBM XIV's scalability is adequate for our requirements, but because it's modular, you can't scale to larger…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"In terms of performance and ability, the product can stand up against its competitors since the solution offers two controller systems to users."
"The most valuable features are external storage virtualization and the 100 percent data guaranteed availability."
"My advice to other people considering this solution is that it is a very good product, it has very good stability, it is easy to use, it has a 100% data security and availability guarantee, and it is a very, very good solution manufactured by a good company."
"Its scalability and performance are the most valuable, as it is quite scalable and has a huge capacity."
"The setup is very easy to manage and configure. The initial setup and takes one hour more or less."
"The performance was decent."
"In summary, this is a very good product but there's always room for improvement."
"The most useful features of Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform for our storage needs are the redundancy and the security."
"For us, the XIV is pretty much set-it-and-forget-it storage."
"IBM XIV's most valuable features are NVME, especially when it comes to de-duplication, compression, and responsiveness."
"XIV setup is very straightforward and easy to configure."
"Very easy to produce reporting data (Snaps). Very easy and fast for provisioning devices and Remote mirroring."
"As it spreads, a chuck of 1MB across the board means using all available spindles on the backend."
"IBM XIV is attractive because it gives value for money in terms of features."
"Installation is amazingly easy."
"Implementing Remote mirroring and local Snaps is very easy."

Cons

"There is a drawback related to Hitachi's configuration flexibility. The Hitachi storage platform solution is not flexible. That means that both the Hitachi and the partner presale guys have to do a lot of work to design a solution."
"The admin tools in the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform definitely have certain shortcomings that require improvement."
"In terms of new features, I would be interested to see deduplication added in their next release."
"If they had a certain approach to layered storage, it would be better. For example, adaption to the browser, or having a centralized console."
"One improvement I am hoping for in the next release is unified storage."
"The software has always been lagging a bit compared to the newer features. It usually takes a cycle for it to catch up."
"Hitachi should launch some small machines in Brazil. The smallest machine here in Brazil is VSP 350, which can be quite big for some of the customers. In China, Hitachi has small models of this equipment, but those models are not available in our region. Its pricing is a big issue for us. We are resellers, and we face some competition from other vendors. Hitachi doesn't always have a good position in terms of the price. Its user interface is also not as good as some of the other competitors, and it can be improved."
"For the support windows to work, maybe they have to upgrade the firmware of the VSP."
"This product was not a good fit for our organization as we have a ton of latency sensitive applications and XIV was not able to keep up with IO + latency demand."
"IBM XIV's scalability is adequate for our requirements, but because it's modular, you can't scale to larger requirements."
"I would rather have a web GUI served directly from the unit, and a CLI accessible directly through SSH."
"I guess we'd like to see the XIV keep pace with how storage is going in terms of speed and latency."
"The change form synchronous mirroring to asynchronous (and vice versa) without reconfiguration from scratch would be helpful."
"Until the drive is replaced, the pool_resizing is locked."
"I encountered stability (performance) issues during enclosure or disk rebuild. Also some power supply issues due to malfunctions of circuits. Sometimes "internal" Snap sessions hang and consume pool capacity."
"Until the drive is replaced, the pool_resizing is locked. This has been an issue a lot of times, especially when the contract says IBM will not replace disks until three drives fail."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"In our company, we only pay towards the licensing charges associated with Forcepoint, as Hitachi is considered to be a third-party product for us."
"I would like to see better pricing and more discounts."
"Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform is a very expensive product."
"Our main issue with the Hitachi G-Series is what we consider to be an archaic software licensing scheme and high maintenance costs."
"A drawback of Hitachi storage systems is that they are expensive. The upfront cost is very high compared to others. But when you compare the IOPS at the same price, Hitachi gives you better business value..."
"The costs were primarily in line with every other vendor at the time."
"It is a little expensive."
"Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series tools are highly specialized, such as management and performance tools and the overall solution is expensive. If customers want to have a lot of data in their hands, they need to purchase several solutions."
"We have a five-year total cost of ownership where we pay an initial amount and then annually for maintenance."
"Licensing is straightforward."
"If you are going to use the product behind an SVC, IBM will price the units lower, since you are likely not to use any of the advanced copy services."
"No-license-required policy, unlike others where you need a license for everything. Just pay once and forget about licenses."
