A scalable tool that needs to improve its support, software resiliency, and software stability
The support team is not technically that strong. The previous company that owned the product, Nortel, went bankrupt, after which the transition phase of the product didn't go smoothly. Avaya did not do well with the product's design and engineering after taking the product over from Nortel, after which Avaya decided to outsource the tool to my company, meaning we have worked as a vendor with third-party access to the tool in the name of Avaya. The support was very bad initially, but my company could fix the problems of the customers on time since we had better communication skills than technical-solving skills due to our limitations related to the area of device engineering. When it comes to a feature of the product, my company could enable it for the customers or users of the product. If, by any chance, my company found a bug in the tool, then it was a hectic task for our support team to deal with it since it took months to fix it. Currently, Extreme Networks takes care of the support part, and it might have improved. I rate the technical support a four out of ten.

Cost-effective protocol support and a straightforward setup with room for login enhancements
In the network operations center, I manage our client's bandwidth. We connect with our clients through BGP and OSPF based on client demands. We also manage routing protocols, policies, internal firewalls, and other details like QE bandwidth, client manage bandwidth management, PoE, PPPoE, and DNS…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"What I like about Extreme Routing is its impressive performance."
"It is very easy to set up."
"Looking at the robustness, I do not know whether it would be carrier grade – let's say for hundreds of thousands of users – but it certainly doesn't balk at 10,000 users or less."
"The routing protocol is the solution's most valuable aspect."
"Provides a good redundancy technique."
"It is a very scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"MikroTik Routers and Switches support every protocol, making them suitable for a wide range of routing policies."
"I have found one of the most valuable features to be the hotspot network."
"I have seen a return on investment since we didn't have to pay a licensing fee."
"We have found this solution is quite robust and there are a lot of features in a small device."
"I like the routing features."
"The stability is good."
"MikroTik routers are very user-friendly and easy to manage"
"The routing is nice and straightforward."

Cons

"The solution is far too unstable. It's completely unreliable."
"The support, software resiliency, and software stability are areas of concern where improvements are required."
"One area for improvement with Extreme Routing is the need for more accessible and comprehensive training."
"It's not evolving as quickly as we would like it to."
"My advice for those looking into ExtremeRouting is: right now all switch manufacturers are backed up for months. If you're looking to implement quickly, I would say shop around a bit because it might be difficult."
"Some of the latest protocols are unavailable."
"The updates as well as the patches could be improved. I believe it would be beneficial to automate the process of router patching to avoid the need for manual checks. With automated patching, as long as the router is connected to the internet, it can automatically perform necessary updates. Failing to patch the router can leave me vulnerable to potential security threats."
"The ports could be improved, as certain areas may need to be terminated with a greater number of Ethernet ports. We initially faced challenges that hindered our network usage, especially with third-party applications that were not certified or supported. It took some time to streamline and resolve these issues."
"The CPU load is too high. This causes the Internet to lag."
"The user interface allows you to do a lot of things, but it is not user-friendly."
"I would like to see some content filtering with MikroTik Routers and Switches."
"MikroTik does not have a wireless solution. If they created a high-performance wireless solution we would deploy it in our infrastructure."
"The initial setup could be easier."
"If the reporting functionality of the solution is considered, I think it is not good."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have no issues with the price."
"The tool has a low price."
"There are not any external or hidden costs."
"It's reasonably priced. It's not the most cheap solution, but also, it's not the most expensive one."
"When you buy a license, it is for life and you don't need to buy another one every year."
"In our last project, we used two hundred units and the price was approximately 500 Shekels ($140 USD)."
"There is a one-time license fee for the use of this solution and it is less expensive than Cisco products."
"A license is not required."
"MikroTik's equipment is very cheap compared to Cisco and Huawei."
