AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Drill-down monitoring shows us the entire transaction chain, from the front end to back end. It needs HTML5 interface.
I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace. If you try to compare SaaS and on-premise Foglight versions you can see differences in UI-design. It's my subjective experiences, but SaaS version looks more modern. Hope this helps

Pros

"The major improvement was the ability to find errors immediately and predict future failures, or when resources reach the maximum capacity."
"The customer that we are using the product for is extremely pleased with the reports and detail of information that they are receiving online, 24x7."
"As an administrator for the AppMon servers, we see the benefits every day when we help business teams to figure out some of their problems, troubleshoot to root cause."
"Just go with Dynatrace. Just start with Dynatrace. Do not go into AppMon."
"We have seen an average three-year return on investment of 451%, which is a huge number when it comes to the saving part."
"The daily metrics which help us analyze the page composition and the corresponding performance metrics so we can quickly and easily determine when something has changed, to aid in root cause analysis."
"What Dynatrace has really allowed our team to do is focus more on innovation, rather than on monitoring and bug-squashing."
"Dynatrace really did an awesome job to provide us a better solution."
"Capacity on database and file servers. I found the algorithms to forecast growth and concerns particularly intuitive."
"Dell Foglight does analyze and optimize your virtual infrastructure. It definitely reduces operational cost."
"The stability we have as a result of using it made up for the cost of the product within a month."
"Excellent monitoring capability and business service views"
"We have no hard figures on the ROI on this product, however having the system has saved us time in terms of debugging and getting to the root cause of issues."
"At a glance I can easily see what is going on with all of my VMware environments, including top consumers of resources."
"Foglight Enterprise was the most scalable and easy to deploy tool."
"Foglight is an awesome tool and it is able to instrument and integrate easily with any monitoring tool."

Cons

"Waiting for the session replay needs improvement."
"The solution is a bit pricey."
"The usability is worse than it used to be."
"In the new Dynatrace solution, support for legacy applications is still not there. "
"It does not have mature enough dashboards."
"Regarding features, it would be good if there would be some features regarding app security."
"At times customer service could be really good, but most of the times I thought that this is a huge area where a lot of improvement could be made."
"One thing we'd like to see is mobile native replay. They don't have a timeline on it yet, but that's one of the key things we're looking at, to get rid of one of our incumbent products that does replay."
"We have not realized a good ROI on the product due to the fact that we were not able to monitor our core application which runs on Webmethods."
"The “cartridge” concept for every little thing is a bit of a bother to implement."

"I think installation and setup needs little more improvement especially when you are installing with external database."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The limitations I see are more to do - and maybe it's because of the nature of the job I have - but they have to do with pricing. It's a little bit pricey. It's a very good tool. It's worth the price, to a certain degree. But it's hard to justify when it's that costly."
"The price range is quite high."
"This is an expensive solution, but it is also worth the money."
"The pricing is a bit on the higher end."
"There is time savings. People's times have been cut in half using this solution because we were previously doing a lot of that manual work. Now, it's a lot more automated, and the data is just there."
"Its licensing is complicated or not transparent."
"Just go with Dynatrace. Just start with Dynatrace. Do not go into AppMon. Start with Dynatrace, because AppMon is going to give you so much extra stuff that 99% of your user base will not need it, including yourself."
"Look at the product and the product features, not the price. Too often people look at the price and turn away. Dynatrace costs a little bit more than the other products I researched, but it can do far more."
"I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
"The price is expensive for us."
"Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
"Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."
