Dashboards facilitate prompt alerts but discovery feature needs enhancement
I would recommend Broadcom DX Application Performance Management if a customer doesn't have any existing performance solution. However, ten years ago, the solution was better, and now there are many competitive options. My overall rating would be between six and seven. The product rating I would give is 6.5 out of 10.

Drill-down monitoring shows us the entire transaction chain, from the front end to back end. It needs HTML5 interface.
I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace. If you try to compare SaaS and on-premise Foglight versions you can see differences in UI-design. It's my subjective experiences, but SaaS version looks more modern. Hope this helps

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The compatibility of the solution is its most valuable aspect."
"CA APM reduces our time to resolution and improves our customer confidence."
"It is a really good, stable, flexible product, but there are no special features when I compare it with the other solutions from the other vendors."
"CA APM is based on a solid solution that could be helpful for everybody."
"It enables me to cover all functionalities and monitor all selected elements over multiple servers, multiple applications, multiple IT resources, and to cover multiple users."
"The most valuable features are the low overhead, the ability to monitor production on 24/7 principle, the ability to decrease time to discover the point of failure in the IT infrastructure or the application environment in a short period of time, reporting for analyzing the performance of the application for improving the code optimizing process."
"We can find out the bottlenecks before the customer encounters them."
"I have no specific advice except that it is a wise choice."
"A lot of features for the price: Java/.Net instrumentation, End User replay (similar to TeaLeaf), and a huge library of monitoring cartridges."
"With the APM you can replay the end user session and see issues quickly by viewing the session."
"Dell Foglight does analyze and optimize your virtual infrastructure. It definitely reduces operational cost."
"FxV is valuable as we can playback the session."
"Having standard monitoring features and a central repository saves us a lot of time and reduces risk of incidents."
"Infrastructure Monitoring and End User Monitoring are the product’s most valuable features to me."
"Our ROI has been great it has saved us many times to resolve issues before customers started complaining."
"At a glance I can easily see what is going on with all of my VMware environments, including top consumers of resources."

Cons

"Dynamic instrumentation, at the moment, I think it is a bit clunky to use and it should be available outside the transaction tracer."
"With CA APM, you can’t scale the ‘webview’ (Team Center), the feature that provides you with the views/dashboards."
"The initial setup is complex."
"CA APM has a steep learning curve as compared to other tools like Dynatrace and especially AppDynamics and New Relic, but in return it is very customization friendly."
"There is no auto flow diagram, and the alert mechanism is not as good when compared to other tools."
"Setup of the solution was straight forward, but our first application was too complex and therefore the first initiative failed."
"The other thing that can be improved is that the dashboard edition in the CA APM is very limited and basic."
"The reports are a key part of APM in my vision because it is through them that we manage to generate the evidence to direct the development team and operational support to address. However, we can not extract the information of the tool through reports. We have needed several times to use screen print screen, CTRL + C and CTRL + V."
"There are some metrics I'd like to track that are difficult to find or implement into a tracking solution without a lot of manual work."
"I want to see mobile access application in the next release."
"We have not realized a good ROI on the product due to the fact that we were not able to monitor our core application which runs on Webmethods."
"The version compatibility needs work."
"Stability was always an issue in large environments."
"I think installation and setup needs little more improvement especially when you are installing with external database."
"Being able to incorporate other bespoke monitoring into Foglight would have made the tool even more useful."
"The upgrade process could use some fine tuning. I have done an upgrade of the system as well as addedupdated agents, and sometimes that process is a bit cumbersome, and does not go as planned."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I'm unable to give information on Broadcom DX Application Performance Management licensing costs, but all Application Performance Management products have expensive pricing. This means that it's not only Broadcom that's expensive, and it would be an advantage if the cost would be a little bit cheaper."
"All discounts are case by case to accommodate the client's budgets."
"Depends on the size of the product you need."
"It is definitely expensive for what we get, but there isn't an alternate option at the moment."
"There is some research needed to determine licensing costs, based on the number of DataPower instances for the Nastel agent, for example."
"The pricing structure should be based on memory or CPU usage rather than the number of agents, as it makes the solution more expensive for us."
"Dynatrace is the most expensive of these tools followed by AppDynamics which is "medium-expensive." CA APM is a bit lower in price than either Dynatrace or AppDynanics... In my opinion, if you can afford it, go for AppDynamics instead of CA APM."
"On pricing, CA is very competitive. I think that's going to help in the long run."
"Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."
"I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
"Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
"The price is expensive for us."
