Dashboards facilitate prompt alerts but discovery feature needs enhancement
I would recommend Broadcom DX Application Performance Management if a customer doesn't have any existing performance solution. However, ten years ago, the solution was better, and now there are many competitive options. My overall rating would be between six and seven. The product rating I would give is 6.5 out of 10.

Drill-down monitoring shows us the entire transaction chain, from the front end to back end. It needs HTML5 interface.
I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace. If you try to compare SaaS and on-premise Foglight versions you can see differences in UI-design. It's my subjective experiences, but SaaS version looks more modern. Hope this helps

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is easy to deploy, and we have been working with customers for many years."
"EPA provides more flexibility for meeting customer requirements."
"For the most part, we run constantly without any issue at this point because of APM."
"The CA Introscope dashboard of applications is the view our operations team uses to quickly identify any issues within the application space especially during peak trading season like Christmas/Easter."
"I have no specific advice except that it is a wise choice."
"The most valuable feature of this product is the CA Customer Experience Manager, as it shows the real impact on the customers."
"We can find out the bottlenecks before the customer encounters them."
"Handling of issues has become proactive rather that reactive, with Introscope flagging issues before they become a crisis."
"Real time database monitoring and alerting are valuable."
"With the APM you can replay the end user session and see issues quickly by viewing the session."
"We have no hard figures on the ROI on this product, however having the system has saved us time in terms of debugging and getting to the root cause of issues."
"Many other tools are capable, but IMO not as flexible or powerful except for particular applications."
"Having standard monitoring features and a central repository saves us a lot of time and reduces risk of incidents."
"It provides a history of the activities on our SQL servers."
"The ability to track performance of an application or application suite over time is extremely valuable to our business partners and for our application development team with near real time results."
"Sometimes we can solve problems before they occur."

Cons

"The reports are a key part of APM in my vision because it is through them that we manage to generate the evidence to direct the development team and operational support to address. However, we can not extract the information of the tool through reports."
"CEM needs to be simplified, because it causes too many interruptions in our daily work."
"The UI still feels a little outdated (though there is change) especially for Dashboards."
"It was complex configuring the service transactions from CEM."
"The scalability is very poor; when you expand your application, you have to do it manually on the deployment."
"We did have stability problems."
"One of the challenges is agent releases. So as we employ agents, they are done relatively manually."
"Automatic report generation needs work."
"There are some metrics I'd like to track that are difficult to find or implement into a tracking solution without a lot of manual work."
"Complicated setup and maintenance."
"I think installation and setup needs little more improvement especially when you are installing with external database."
"Being able to incorporate other bespoke monitoring into Foglight would have made the tool even more useful."
"The price is expensive for us."
"My only complaint from Foglight for monitoring is that you only get a plot for five minute average for metrics like CPU and Memory, on the application side I can see metrics more quickly at 15 seconds for metrics like active sessions, heap. I would like to see the same for CPU and memory."
"We are running a Webmethods stack (Software AG) and Foglight is unable to instrument. We are in a POC with Dynatrace and it was able to instrument with little effort."
"I recall that the lay-out was rather dull when I used this particular version of Foglight."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing structure should be based on memory or CPU usage rather than the number of agents, as it makes the solution more expensive for us."
"I'm unable to give information on Broadcom DX Application Performance Management licensing costs, but all Application Performance Management products have expensive pricing. This means that it's not only Broadcom that's expensive, and it would be an advantage if the cost would be a little bit cheaper."
"Setup costs are quite competitive relative to other solutions, and simpler."
"On pricing, CA is very competitive. I think that's going to help in the long run."
"Pricing and licensing are not issues."
"Dynatrace is the most expensive of these tools followed by AppDynamics which is "medium-expensive." CA APM is a bit lower in price than either Dynatrace or AppDynanics... In my opinion, if you can afford it, go for AppDynamics instead of CA APM."
"Althougth it is a bit expensive, it is really worth it"
"The licensing costs are expensive."
"The price is expensive for us."
"Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."
"I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
"Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
