We performed a comparison between Dell Unity XT and Huawei OceanStor based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.
Comparison Results: Based on the parameters we compared, Dell Unity XT came out ahead of Huawei OceanStor. Both products have similar deployment difficulty and support quality, but Huawei OceanStor has more features that need improvement and can get expensive, depending on the chosen licensing.
"Data reduction and compression. Sub millisecond latency."
"We have tons of capacity on it."
"The speed is the most valuable feature, along with the ease of getting it connected. We were able to get it online in less than a day."
"The reliability is very good."
"The technical support is very good."
"We put a fair amount of stress on it because we run sequel workloads and we run web applications where the same web files are hit over and over. We have had almost zero stability issues with that SAN, that has been really great for us."
"The data reduction technology part of the scalability has been impressive, like its ability to host additional workloads, volumes of data, and databases."
"The management features are well organized and they have a very good dashboard."
"It's a much smaller footprint than our older storage arrays, which take up some six tiles, a lot of space in the data center. The Unity's are a lot smaller, and they're a lot faster."
"The way it takes the Snaps, that is one of the best features. Snapshot performance is what is key in the Unity, compared to a traditional VNX."
"I like that the performance is very good."
"We can sleep at night because the support is great."
"With all-flash it should be able to scale. You probably just need one 4U device and you have terabytes of space."
"It's the simplicity part of it. It's the ease of management, it's the call home, the CloudIQ functionality. It's all built in. I think Dell EMC has put a lot of thought into it."
"It is easy to scale, maintain, and manage."
"It will certainly help us scale bigger. If I look at the footprint, the VNX's was multi-rack. Now, all of a sudden, we're only at a portion of a rack. And, obviously, if we can scale within the same rack - we can certainly see that by the number of hard drives we've had to put in - we can scale a lot more easily."
"The most valuable feature of Huawei OceanStor is the hybrid applications."
"Huawei OceanStor is easy to manage."
"The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features."
"Excellent and efficient support, and the product is a good price."
"Huawei OceanStor is designed with built-in high availability features, such as fault tolerance, ensuring consistent data access and minimizing downtime."
"The solution is easy to use."
"This is a stable storage system."
"It is a highly available product."
"Having something native in the Pure Storage ecosystem would make it integrated and in one single company, and we wouldn't have to work with multiple organizations."
"It needs to improve its price."
"The GUI is simplistic and basic. I feel like it's explanatory, but not enough, it needs a little more to it."
"It is a bit expensive."
"From a scalability perspective, it is a very small storage solution, so it's not very expandable."
"We haven't seen ROI."
"The support for NFS protocols right out-of-the-box need improvement. I'm used to other storage vendors who have NFS support right out-of-the-box, and Pure Storage doesn't seem to have anything."
"I would like to see data tiering to AWS."
"This solution would be improved with the addition of flexible raid volumes."
"I would like to have secure mobile connectivity going forward. This would help me be more proactive."
"There are some features in VNX that I wish were in the Unity. For example, Storage Groups for isolating LANs and hosts. That is a big issue."
"They can certainly improve in terms of monitoring."
"The one thing that we would look at would be if they were to expand the file level features, just to give us a balance or a tier between it and Isilon options out there, for unstructured data."
"Stability is the problem. We've had stability issues with it. We've had problems with the iSCSI interface. We've had it for two years now and for two years we've had problems where a service processor will drop, we'll lose connectivity to LUNs, we'll lose connectivity to the storage, issues like that. No matter how we've tried to chase it down, everybody just points fingers at each other. The only thing that changed in our environment was that the Unity solution was installed."
"Having more artificial intelligence tools built into the solution would be a great benefit. This would allow us to see more about the workloads and higher visibility, such as performance degradation."
"It is expensive, and the pricing could be better."
"Huawei is not that cheap."
"Could have a more stable, lighter Metro and better logging system."
"The speed has room for improvement."
"The duration of the built-in snapshot technology must be improved."
"I would like to see more iterations and direct integration with other solutions."
"Unfortunately, this product doesn't support Flash Disks, but it's IOPS capacity is a great compromise."
"The management is not a good feature in all of Huawei products. It's not easy or simple. Huawei has some problems with management and handling storage information from one interface."
"The solution could improve by having better integration."
