File sharing has supported collaboration and disaster recovery but security support still needs work

Dell PowerScale can improve specifically for AI workloads, particularly on the MCPs. I would add that we have not seen an official MCP from Dell PowerScale and are relying on open source. It would be valuable to have an MCP server that we can set up directly with them. Regarding Dell PowerScale's AI capabilities, I think its governance and security could be better. We have Superna that we buy along with Dell PowerScale, but we are seeing very big problems with integrating it. Superna is primarily for the security use case, as we want to prevent cybersecurity attacks and ransomware attacks. If Dell is providing this as a supplementary feature, it should provide better support. Regarding Dell PowerScale's AI capabilities, I do not see much accuracy and reliability of output. This is actually a security problem because Dell does not provide official MCP servers while most other vendors are providing it. This forces us to rely on open source, which is not secure. Dell PowerScale plays a role in my organization's AI initiatives as we want to use the Metadata IQ functionality from Dell PowerScale; however, there is not enough support and extensive documentation for us to be able to do this.

Backup policies have strengthened security and replication but still need flexible long-term retention

The support and compatibility are areas of concern. When it comes to Azure workloads, Veeam Data Platform has limitations with only MS SQL database and Cosmos, and no other databases are supported by Veeam Backup for Azure. The main challenge I noticed is that enterprise customers may have a requirement to retain backups for 10 years or 15 years with monthly and weekly backups. In Veeam Data Platform, we do not have customization or compatibility to retain specific data backups as monthly and yearly. The retention schedule is fixed. For instance, it is the first Friday of the backup or the last Friday of the month. If it is weekly, it should be one of the weeks. If it is monthly, it should be the last Friday. For yearly, it is the last Friday of that respective month in that year. However, this should not be the case. When a customer confirms, 'Please go and take an EOD backup and retain it for 10 years,' Veeam Data Platform does not support this sort of customization. I even raised a case with Veeam Data Platform and they clearly stated that Veeam Data Platform only accepts the GFS policy according to the retention defined, and there is no customization available. This is a significant limitation. I should have the customization to go and take a backup of a specific date, month, or year, but Veeam Data Platform does not allow this and restricts me to only the policy supported. For example, if I take any backup, I do not have an option to extend the retention. If a customer asks, 'Please take a backup,' and later requests, 'No, it is very critical. Can you please extend the retention for 15 years?' Veeam Data Platform does not support this. Veeam Data Platform does not allow me to extend the retention in the way other tools do. These are limitations I came across in my experience, and I feel these are minimal requirements. The same features are offered by other third-party backup tools available in the market. From the analytics point of view, I personally feel some challenges. Veeam Data Platform has two different products: VBR and Veeam Backup for Azure. As we are running on cloud platforms, if we are in Azure, we must go for Veeam Backup for Azure. If we need to create copy jobs, I must again come to VBR. However, Veeam ONE is not capable enough to integrate both platforms. For instance, if I am taking backup of workloads through Veeam Backup for Azure, I could not find an option to integrate it into Veeam ONE for reports and analytics. It is only limited to VBR. Whatever jobs we created in VBR are displayed there, but Veeam Backup for Azure does not integrate, at least from what I have explored, and it should not be this way. Veeam ONE should support all Veeam Data Platform products.

How to backup Dell EMC PowerScale (Isilon) with Veeam or an alternative tool?

Assuming you want to keep the data within the datacenter, there are a few options: For Small deployments (~20-100TB's), you could mount share(s) on any backup (media) server and backup the data up over the network using a file-system agent - Veeam could easily support this. For Medium deployments (~100TB - 1PB), you could use any backup system that supports NDMP. Not sure if Veeam supports NDMP...

There are a number of alternative cloud solutions available e.g. Druva. However, if the price is a key factor then you may benefit from by using an Managed Service Provider (MSP). MSP's white label large, credible & established platforms. They provide the same level of speed, uptime, resilience and security as a key brand name but can be as much as half the price. The management of the backup will be optionally yours or fully outsourced to the MSP. Another benefit of the MSP model is that they will have other skills to complement your own internal resources potentially adding further layers of security and backend IT people to support your operation.

I have no experience with Dell EMC PowerScale though I do know that it is supported by Veeam. A Veeam Scale Out Backup Repository can distribute the load across the PowerScale cluster via multiple Backup Repository Extents each defined to use a different cluster node DNS A record and path. When backups exceed the maximum file size limitation even with Veeam deduplication and compression, other considerations should be made. Note: Disable the write coalescer on the share directory and all sub-directories used by Veeam. PowerScale is a complex system and therefore I would advise you to contact Veeam experts on how to deploy Veeam in accordance with PowerScale. But a Scale Out Back Repository is an option, also XFS with reflink supports any Dell EMC PowerScale (Isilon) configuration. MSP's are fine too if you are comfortable with having data outside your datacenter. dsmISI VEEAM (general-storage.com)
