Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution is easy to use, flexible and has a lot of out-of-the-box functionality. You can configure the dashboards or you can use a script. However, to fully utilize its capabilities you will want to use a lot of scripts which you will need advanced training. The reports can be customized for many things, such as chargeback billing.""It generates very detailed reports, which makes things easier when it comes to IT auditing.""The deduplication is probably the most valuable feature of that requirement.""This is a stable solution.""It has a lot of stock reports. I believe over 300 canned reports, which for the most part meet a lot of generic needs."

"The solution can scale as needed.""You can see how the logs are applied, check the apply time, and how far behind the standby is at any given time.""It's a very good solution if you want to protect your data across two data centers, or you have a middle man or many administrators who use these solutions for protecting their data. It's very reliable compared to other solutions that are most often not storage-based.""One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""The most important feature is that if I want to test the database at the disaster recovery site, I can take a snapshot, test it, and then revert it back to the original state without needing to restore the complete database from the primary data center to the disaster recovery.""Backup and application continuity are most valuable."

Cons
"It is difficult to manage the solution with the available tools. You need to know exactly what are you are doing.""There is a steep learning curve to use the interface and to create new reports, this could be made easier. If the solution could provide more drag and drop functionality to build more advanced reports that would be very helpful.""They should empower their customers with the ability to upgrade this solution as long as it's in the same major release.""It's a bit difficult for first-time users.""The functionality of the Data Protection Advisor is limited and is something that is lacking in this solution. Other solutions like CloudIQ and DDMC provide a much better outlook on how data protection should be done."

More Dell Data Protection Advisor Cons →

"The IP implementation and maintenance are a little bit hard to manage across Oracle solutions, including Oracle Data Guard.""Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with.""Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle.""We would like to be able to see the date time stamp when you execute DGMGRL commands.""They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard.""The usage of block storage devices in the cloud or migration of a type of storage from one site to another site can be improved. Currently, we have to use multi-node to single node because of the lack of storage support on the Azure side. It did not really work. Our DBA had to spend a lot of time tweaking the Data Guard tools, or the underlying Oracle VMs, to make sure that Data Guard would run on top of different types of storage. So, if it can support transporting or getting from one type of storage to another type of storage in a different site or a different technology, it would be very helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It's not very expensive — I think the price is fair."
  • "You have to procure the license when you are ordering or quoting for Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). DPS is bundled with the suite and comes with a license. However, if you purchase NetWorker separately then you will have to procure the license for DPS separately."
  • "For pricing, I would rate Dell 2 out of 5. It's affordable."
