We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We use Commvault Command Center for backups and restores and for the creation of new clients. We use it for other functionalities as well. In terms of VMware, I can go directly to the Command Center, enter VMware, and I can search it directly. Command Center is very useful and it can be used for more advanced techniques.""In terms of the speed of backup, it operates seamlessly, so I'd rate it as excellent... with my daily use and workload, quite honestly I don't even notice when it backs up.""The most valuable features of Commvault Complete Data Protection are the complete feature sets it provides in one platform. You are able to backup many different types of data, such as virtual machines, servers, cloud, endpoints, Microsoft Office365, and Gmail. The usage of the solution is flexible.""What is most valuable to me are the search features, where you can search through large backup data sets and find what you're looking for. Our data sets are so big that we're over the petabyte mark. To find a specific file for a specific user out of 10,000 users is a challenge... If we can glean from them a general description of where it might be, the search feature comes in very handy to actually locate it and restore it for them.""It's very user-friendly. It supports a wide range of workloads. It's quite easy to use, it's very powerful and it's scalable.""The Commvault Complete Data Protection interface is straightforward to use.""We specialize in Commvault and IntelliSnap. Commvault covers all our customers' backup needs in one system, and they have complete control over their Snapshot backups. Snapshots are important to our customers because of the size of their data sets.""The features I find most helpful in Commvault are its ability to perform incremental backups and significantly reduce backup times for our diverse multi-architecture, multi-environment environment."

"We don't need to manage different devices.""We use it for complete backup and recovery. We have multiple clients and have created multiple large virtual capabilities and zoning backlogs.""Dell PowerProtect is stable and scalable.""The solution is strong.""Instead of four or five tools, consisting of backup software, storage where the backup resides, and a separate system for reporting and central monitoring, they all now come in the virtual edition for IDP.""The product is integrated with Huawei software and its backup and recovery time is very fast.""The product is easy to troubleshoot and store data.""IDPA's best feature is Turbo Boost Technology. The compression and duplication features are excellent, too."

Cons
"The pricing of the solution can be improved and made cheaper.""There is room for improvement in the Knowledge Base and error reporting. I would like to see best practices in the Knowledge Base, and have the ability to diagnose errors without contacting support.""We are using a production environment with customer-sensitive data on it. As per our central bank rules and regulations, we can't keep our customer's sensitive data in the cloud.""Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals.""I would like to see more customizable reports. I have reports going right now, but the daily report, for example, shows something like 40 jobs that ran when there are just a few endpoints on there. I'd like to just know if the endpoint was successfully backed up, not how many times. More customizable reports would be nice to have.""I would like to see a more user-friendly GUI.""They can improve the VMware recovery and VMware backup. There is an improvement area on the VMware infrastructure. They can make available what they call a VSA proxy. They can have an appliance-type setup to deploy VSA backups and help recover quicker. They can have an appliance ready. Instead of having to have a server dedicated to that and installing software on a server, they can just provide an actual appliance for that.""Bare-metal restore needs some work. It's not intuitive and seems to have been an afterthought."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"I would like to see integration with Dell EMC's Cloud Tier.""Managing the product is a little bit complicated.""We cannot add IDPA to DPC, and each IP has a DP Central, which cannot monitor other IDPAs.""There is room for improvement in terms of network connectivity.""The price could be lowered slightly, to make it more competitive.""The solution should be easier to use.""Dell PowerProtect DP needs to include more features and improve backup for a continual base.""We would like to see the pricing drop a bit."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "The licensing is billed on a monthly basis. Dell is bundled so that when you order IDPA, you get everything together with the license."
  • "I would rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
  • "It is a cost-effective solution."
  • "We have a perpetual license. It is a capacity-based license."
