We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"There are many valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X giving many possibilities to complete jobs.""The backup and restore capabilities are key. The most useful things to us about Commvault, in general, is the breadth of the applications that it can protect as well as the features inside of it, like deduplication and encryption. When people get their data encrypted, Commvault has a way to tell if somebody is being attacked through a cybersecurity threat because their data changes. So, Commvault has what they call honeypot files out there to look to see if anybody is changing these files. Only Commvault knows which files those are, so nobody should be messing with those files. If it changes, then it will alert you to say, "Oh, I potentially have somebody messing with my files." It will alert you to something going on in your environment that probably shouldn't be happening. We deploy that with all our customers so they have this capability as well.""The most valuable feature is Commvault's coverage. It has wide coverage to back up every data center environment. The product can back up OpenStack, OpenShift, and competitive solutions don't have this feature. Commvault can handle backing up any virtual workload or enterprise application.""Commvault has support for backing up operating systems and servers.""It's a software-based solution so we just need a license to expand it.""The VM backups and the recovery from cloud infrastructure are valuable.""We use Commvault Command Center for backups and restores and for the creation of new clients. We use it for other functionalities as well. In terms of VMware, I can go directly to the Command Center, enter VMware, and I can search it directly. Command Center is very useful and it can be used for more advanced techniques.""What I found most valuable in Commvault Complete Data Protection is its deduplication technique, mainly because the solution has the highest deduplication ratio, giving you higher storage capacity."

"The tool's implementation has made life easier for customers. It is sold by SAP. The integration between SAP and the solution is good, making it easy to access the documents. It is widely recognized as a market leader in enterprise document management.""I did not face issues with the product's scalability...The solution's technical support is good.""It has a robust search but has often been difficult for people to learn.""The product can be integrated with different solutions.""An advantage is integration with your IP directory.""We like how the solution allows us to have retention of records and workflows, as well as its fire plan."

Cons
"The main area for improvement is that we sometimes experience negative effects from their updates. If they had a larger test area for their updates, that would help.""The Java interface is not great. The Command Center interface is far better and it looks nicer, but it doesn't have all the powerful features available in the CommServe/Java console. The place to improve the product is on the management interface level.""The integration of Metallic could improve. It would be a benefit if Metallic could integrate with multiple applications or platforms.""I would like them not to push Command Center. It is good, but I would like them to enable all the features for the Java console. Some things are not in the Java console, like Office 365 agents. In fact, they are there, but one of the engineers had to show me how to configure it. It's not done the same as in the Command Center.""One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on. It takes users time to get familiar with Commvault. On average, it takes our customers between one and three months to learn it. The console and the way you configure Commvault have very advanced settings. It takes time to understand how it works.""I would like more communication informing us on what Commvault is doing in the background.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""Compared to Rubrik, MongoDB Data Protector, and NetBackup, Commvault is better. The licensing team was quite tricky recently because they stopped the unlimited files for that license. Commvault made a bank of 500GB only, a node-based license can take it, which is disappointing. Reporting needs to be more granular. Also, there should be a showback of data being backed up, and the backup cost to share the cost internally with the department."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"Support could be enhanced. The first line of support consists of individuals who lack experience with some key aspects. When you create a support ticket, the time to resolve the issue may be prolonged because the first person may not understand the system or the solution.""The ease of use should be addressed.""OpenText Content Manager needs to improve its user interface. Its installation process is difficult and can be made easier.""The stability of the solution is an area of concern where improvements can be made.""Due to very limited use in the industry, vendor and contract support are hard to find.""The product could improve its scalability."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "I would suggest that you do a thorough evaluation of all competing products and look for support for these products in your local area."
  • "The fees incurred are for the licensing and maintenance."
  • "I rate the product price an eight or nine on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive. The solution is expensive."
  • "The solution's licensing cost depends on the customer domain. Though its costs are high, the product is worth the money. You have to pay a one-time cost and support costs."
