Tight deployment controls have secured production and simplified complex release rollbacks
The best feature of BMC AMI DevX Code Pipeline that impresses me is the fallback functionality. The fallback functionality impresses me because when developers deploy large releases involving multiple components, such as COBOL programs, underlying copy books, and CICS modules, backing out changes would typically become a nightmare. With ISPW, developers can back out the entire release or entire package. If they deployed 100 components and want to back out everything, they can do so with one function and back out all components without worrying about backing out each individual component. They can back out the entire deployment set, which handles everything and brings them back to the previous versions. Developers can also selectively back out a subset of the deployed components. They also have the ability to revert to not just the most previous version but can go back several versions if they choose to do so. This gives them a lot of flexibility.

A highly stable tool for managing mainframe software development projects that require significant expertise
We use the basic feature set of Endevor to control and track all of the sales operations within our company.  It is a very good product that allows safe management of the individual components. The tools are specifically designed for mainframe environments, providing features tailored to the…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The product has made our mainframe data management process easier. It has helped us save manhours. The tool's most valuable feature is the ability to edit tape files. Its ability to clone files is beneficial in application development."
"As far as the software vendors that I work with go, Compuware has some of the best support, in terms of listening to customer requests and accepting enhancements to the product and the like."
"Test data management capabilities are good."
"The most valuable feature of Topaz is Xpediter. It's more flexible than Xpediter through MVS."
"We can develop in parallel today on ISPF, but it's giving us the advantage of the newer interface into the mainframe programming languages that younger programmers can use and are familiar with, rather than using the ISPF green screen."
"It's a modernized development portal and helps reduce the learning curve for younger people coming in to work on the platform,"
"We had parallel development before, but the way ISPW implements it is better. It has more control and oversight of the process, whereas before, it was like the Wild West. Everybody could have their own package with their own version of the component in it... ISPW is constantly aware of it. It notifies when someone else is using or has a different version of that component."
"I like the ability that it has to format copy books in a presentable manner. So, you will be able to see the starting offset in length of each field within the layout."
"It provides secure, controlled access to source management."
"We can make it do pretty much whatever we want, depending on just how complicated we want it to be, as it is pretty flexible."
"I like it because it customizable, and it's rock steady, it's a very robust and mature product."
"The support they provide for their products is bar none: excellent."
"I do not think our organization could go without it."
"The most valuable feature of Endevor is customization and ease of use."
"The tools are specifically designed for mainframe environments, providing features tailored to the unique requirements of the systems, ensuring there are no mistakes."
"CA Endevor is better than not having any source control management, some kind of source control tools."

Cons

"The ISPW plugin could be improved to add some functionality which is already in ISPF panels and not in the plugin."
"While I am aware of the possibility to integrate Git with BMC AMI DevX zAdviser, this integration does not fit within our solution landscape."
"The solution could be improved by being better integrated with the open world. In the next release, I would like to have the ability to work in an open environment whilst remaining integrated with the legacy environment."
"Technical support has gotten better over the years, though there's always room for improvement."
"One thing I would really like to see some improvement on is the promotion diagnostic messages. It invokes utilities "under the covers" to copy components, and it does not echo back any of the error messages from those utilities."
"One thing I would really like to see some improvement on is the promotion diagnostic messages."
"One area for improvement with this product could be in providing clearer guidance and tools for disaster recovery planning and execution."
"We plan to replace BMC Compuware File-AID due to its price. Two years back, we paid 11,000 dollars. However, the current price is 27,900 dollars. The price has increased to at least eight times its initial cost. We would need to pay around 60,000 dollars to have all three products together. We also encountered issues during version updates."
"They need to ditch the Eclipse plugin and just make the development environment for Z the standard Eclipse interface."
"I find the ISPF interface to be lacking. It seems like you have to navigate to a lot of different screens to work with the same element."
"It is stable. We do not have any issues with it. It is just complex because it is a tool set. It is not a plug and play kind of product at all."
"It's not a perfect solution."
"The internal setup is complex and rigid."
"Currently the only solution is to continue creating environments for use with agile development which is a maintenance nightmare, or ask the application teams to redesign their software so it is contained within their own applications."
"Sometimes finding errors and output can be difficult because it spits out so many messages that it is hard to figure out which ones are the ones you need to look at and what flow did it actually take through the processor is what they call them."
"The customer service and support team are not helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I like the seat-based licensing much more than MSU-based licensing, and that the cost has been competitive."
"In terms of pricing, there isn't an extra charge for the parts of it we use. It comes with the licenses we purchased for other products, so no complaints there. The licensing is built in with the other products that you purchase from Compuware."
"It has saved our developers time and effort when working on documentation, which is now more readable and fluent."
"The only thing I would mention related to the licensing and/or the pricing, is that they have some visualization features in there that are licensed by concurrent users. We're starting to trip up on that. We're looking to probably increase the number of concurrent licenses that we have. But those types of licensing strategies, where they license by concurrent users or the number of seats is confusing for some people. They don't understand why it works sometimes and doesn't work other times."
"The price point is great."
"In general, Compuware tools are very competitive."
"Just make sure if you are going to license, ensure you license the right features."
"It's worth the value. The pricing is fairly good, justifiable for the return on investment."
"The solution is very expensive."
"It's competitively priced and, as far as I know, it's just an enterprise license. We have found it is worth the money."
"The product is expensive."
"Licensing is fairly simple, you don't need multiple licenses."
