Affordable, easy to set up and has a simple UI
Pros and Cons
  • "It's scalable."
  • "They need to improve their technical side."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for backups in the virtualization area. They are experts in virtualization. For a lot of use cases, the customer doesn't have a backup in their virtualization for VMware HyperV or Nutanix. We are using Veeam to back up their virtualization.

What is most valuable?

They are the second-best backup after Veritas.

Veeam is easy to set up and they have a simple UI for users to set up and administer the Veeam console.

Veeam has low pricing. They are great for a smaller market or smaller business all the way through to enterprise-sized companies. It's scalable. In Indonesia, maybe two of our telco companies use Veeam and they have a lot of the market in Indonesia.

The solution's initial setup is easy.

It's a stable solution.

What needs improvement?

They need to improve their technical side. They don't have a lot of compatibility with Solar HP-UX, IX, or SAP. They still need to have a lot of improvement in that area.

They need to make their Office 365 backup is included in one console with the backup replication. It will be easier that way and place it in line with the Veritas NetBackup offering.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the product to be quite stable. It's not buggy. There aren't glitches. It's reliable. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product can scale well. It's great for small businesses to larger enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

Since Veeam is easy to use and easy to set up, we don't have a lot of problems. Therefore, we don't have a lot of experience with their support. We've never had a reason to contact them. Due to this, I can's speak to how helpful or responsive they are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am familiar with Veritas as well.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is straightforward and simple to set up. It's not a complex or difficult process. A company shouldn't have any issues implementing it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is very good. They are very affordable, even for smaller businesses.

What other advice do I have?

We are a Veeam partner. We're partners with a variety of organizations.

We use various deployment models, including public and private cloud, on-premises, and hybrid setups.

I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten. We are quite pleased with its capabilities.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Has good snapshotting and cloning features
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features."
  • "The cost needs to be considered."

What is our primary use case?

We have scheduled the backup to be done on our side. At certain intervals, depending on the capability of Veeam, we are doing the replication at a remote site on the same cluster that we use Nutanix as a backup. Basically, we have a Nutanix cluster taking backup of another Nutanix cluster. Outside of this, we are also using Veeam, which is on another machine, or basically another storage.

We have 19 Veeam running on a four-node cluster. Currently, we are using 80% of our RAM capacity and have more CPU and storage available, we still have capacity.

How has it helped my organization?

Before using Veeam and HCI, we were performing the functions physically. We used physical machines to run our services. Hardware failure leads to the pillar of our services. Now we have high organization and we can sustain any failure.

We have found the Veeam function very useful because it saves us a lot of storage.

What is most valuable?

Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam is scalable. We can add nodes to scale up, it's a scale of architecture.

How are customer service and support?

We receive very good support from Nutanix.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Veeam we had physical machines that required manual backup.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Veeam is very straightforward. It took one month to get the production. After the initial deployment, we had to migrate our Veeam from physical to virtual so that took another two months.

What about the implementation team?

We received help from the OEM. After set up it is easy to manage ourselves without help from OEM or any system user.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on our investment within two years. Prior to Veeam, we were doing the work physically, which is costly. We had to buy hardware every time we needed a new service to go to production. Now we have the cluster and can immediately deploy a new Veeam and be up and running immediately.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam Backup Replication is a one time subscription for five years.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated other options from VMware, Cisco Hyper-V and Nutanix.

What other advice do I have?

The cost needs to be considered.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an 8 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Has a straightforward backup process
Pros and Cons
  • "Instant Backup is an useful feature."
  • "It is efficient but can improve security-wise."

What is our primary use case?

It is convenient to create backups of virtual machines, and hard disks. It's also applicable for backing up various other services. When dealing with a heavy workload, the process of backup is designed to be straightforward. It involves transferring data from on-premise to the cloud or vice versa. This encompasses different usage scenarios.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam's Instant Recovery feature allowed my organization to continue operations during file server failure by immediately restoring lost data.

What is most valuable?

Instant Recovery is an useful feature.

What needs improvement?

It is efficient but can improve security-wise.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How are customer service and support?

The support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

How was the initial setup?

It required 2-3 people to deploy. It is deployed in a hybrid manner. It took almost 2-3 hours for the process to complete.

The deployment procedure begins by accessing the Veeam Backup website to download the necessary software. Subsequently, the software is managed on the server where installation is intended. Before proceeding with installation, it's recommended to have a backup, ensuring functionality on the server. The installation process itself is distinct, not combined with the backup sector. Each step is downloadable, contributing to the installation information. The final step involves creating a backup job. Users can choose the backup type they prefer, whether it's full, implemented, or differential. Following this, the backup can be saved on desired media, such as servers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not expensive and I would rate it five out of ten.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We considered other vendors but discovered that the Veeam Backup has establishment as a direct node-to-node connection and synchronization with other systems.

What other advice do I have?

I can recommend that it serves as a good solution. The code constitutes a comprehensive answer. It effectively backs up all workloads. This applies to various scenarios – from email to physical and virtual machines, services, SAP DNS, and Azure DNS – allowing for comprehensive backup solutions. It extends to cloud-based backups as well. Essentially, it covers the entirety of our workload, whether on our infrastructure or network.

I would rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Cost effective backup solution that enables the retention of large volumes of data
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam Cloud Connect has helped us to reduce the cost of cloud storage for an offsite solution using their archive storage feature."
  • "It would be useful if we could integrate our on-premise VM solution with the Azure workload backup from the existing console. This would assist our customers in reducing the cost of hardware."

What is our primary use case?

We have used this solution to back up our on-premise environment. Currently, we are backing up our VMs VMware.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam Cloud Connect has helped us to reduce the cost of cloud storage for an offsite solution using their archive storage feature.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature this solution offers us is new and allows us to store data in the cloud and works with Azure and AWS Cloud. This is useful for managing the retention of large volumes of data.

The continuous backup functionality is useful for us to keep all our data up to date.

What needs improvement?

It would be useful if we could integrate our on-premise VM solution with the Azure workload backup from the existing console. This would assist our customers in reducing the cost of hardware.

It would be good to have the option to store the data directly to Azure, AWS Cloud or any other cloud solutions.

We would like to have cloud storage set up as a storage solution instead of local storage and have an integrated console for AWS, GCP and Amazon Azure workloads.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for the last five to six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution for a medium-sized environment. We haven't tried it for a large-scale environment but the solution may not perform as well at a larger scale.

How are customer service and support?

The support offered is very good, however, hey recently introduced a ticketing system that requires us to raise a ticket from their portal site and wait for a response. Calling them directly is not possible.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Commvault as our backup solution. We switched because we wanted to avoid having an offsite team and hardware.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and very simple. It took three to four hours to set up the environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have like pooled license and act as a seller. We pay approximately $800 per month. There are no additional costs from Veeam directly but the solution does require cloud storage that needs to be paid for.

What other advice do I have?

It's an excellent product that is simple and easy to setup. If you have a medium-sized environment and infrastructure, this is a good solution. There is an option of a 30-day trial to test all the features the solution offers.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Easy to install and understand, but it should be specified that the DR component must be out of the domain to protect against ransomware
Pros and Cons
  • "I like that the solution is very simple to install."
  • "The DR component should be part of the comprehensive package, not separate."

What is our primary use case?

We use the latest version, although I do not recall exactly which one.

We use the solution for our regular backups and replication. While I have proposed that we also use it for DR, I have been informed that this component in Veeam comes with a cost. Perhaps in the future we will do this.

What is most valuable?

I like that the solution is very simple to install. The setup is not complex.

The good thing about the solution is that it's easy to understand, implement and take back data and resources. It's not complex.

What needs improvement?

The solution is too expensive. While I feel the DR component to be very straightforward and simple, I have been informed by management that it is overly expensive, although I do not have the full financial information at my disposal to verify this on my own.

The DR component should be part of the comprehensive package, not separate.

Ransomware attacks present an issue. Veeam should make it clear that the server needs to be out of the domain when it comes to ensuring that there is no ransomware attack or security breach. This is an issue of primary importance. An ex-colleague of mine told me that when a ransomware attack occurred, the re-set team, which dealt with a similar Veeam setup, ensured that the server was not part of the domain. Specifying that the server must be out of the domain will ensure that no ransomware attacks will occur. This needs to be locally authenticated.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication over the course of the past year.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to take back data and resources.

How are customer service and support?

I have not had occasion to make use of tech support, although this was utilized in my previous company, where I was doing incorporation consulting.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is very simple to install. It is not complex. The implementation is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While I do not have all the financial information at my disposal, I understand from management that the DR component is too expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We have around 5,000 employees using the solution in my organization.

While the product is good, I would recommend that one be certain to have his Veeam server out of the domain. It should be locally authenticated.

I rate Veeam Backup & Replication as a seven out of ten.

We have been using it in small environments, and it is stable, straightforward to deploy, and scalable for our needs
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup and replication features are most valuable."
  • "I would like them to move back to host licensing."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for backup and replication in small environments.

How has it helped my organization?

It has not improved anything. It is just a backup solution. Our customers needed something for disaster recovery in case something bad happens. It is something they needed, and it is something they have got.

What is most valuable?

The backup and replication features are most valuable.

What needs improvement?

I would like them to move back to host licensing.

Everything should improve over time as new functionalities come along. The product needs to follow new technologies and integrate them.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. It is almost fire-and-forget.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't have experience with large environments. We only have small environments with a host of virtual machines. It is scalable for our use. There is no problem.

Its users are system administrators. Any increase in its usage would depend on the pricing. Veeam has changed its licensing policy. With their universal licensing, things have become a bit expensive. It is a free market, so we'll see.

How are customer service and support?

It should be good, but we have not used it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use other products. This is not the only one. We use Micro Focus Data Protector, Arcserve UDP, and Microsoft Data Protection Manager.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager is more windows-oriented. It is not as good as Veeam for sure, but it is good enough for certain environments.

How was the initial setup?

It was quite straightforward. We are using it in relatively small environments. These are not big installations.

It took a few hours. The deployment is quick, but you have to test everything and make sure everything works.

What about the implementation team?

We are an integrator. For its deployment and maintenance, one system administrator is enough.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We try to use perpetual licensing, and there are no additional costs.

They have recently moved to universal licensing, which is more expensive, and I would like them to go back to host licensing.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to decide for themselves if it checks all the boxes.

I would rate it an eight out of 10 because it is now more expensive with universal licensing.

Provides granular restoration, has good replication features, and scales well
Pros and Cons
  • "The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems."
  • "Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage."

What is our primary use case?

It is for backup and disaster recovery as a service. It is deployed in our data center, and then we sell the service to our customers.

What is most valuable?

The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems.

Replication features are very useful for customers. They can recover the services and move from one data center to another.

What needs improvement?

Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is good. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It scales well. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of scalability.

In our infrastructure, we have hundreds of users. Our customers are from many markets, but its users are from their IT department.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate them an eight out of 10.

How was the initial setup?

It is not complex. It is straightforward. We can deploy it to our customers in about 1 to 2 hours or 1 to 2 days. It depends on a customer's infrastructure.

What about the implementation team?

We deploy it ourselves, and we only use support when we have technical issues with the product. We have three engineers for deployment.

What was our ROI?

It is very difficult to calculate because it is a backup solution. It is not a business service, which makes it very difficult to calculate the ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are fine with its pricing policy.

We provide service for our customers, and the licensing is on a monthly basis. They get licenses, computer resources, and our support. Everything is included in a single price.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to test this product before buying it. There are many backup products and services, and they have different features and functionalities. We provide our customers a 30-days trial period to test the product for free, and then they can agree or not agree to use this product.

I would rate it an eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Useful solution for data backup replication that could be improved by having a more effective support team
Pros and Cons
  • "The data backup replication has been the most useful feature. Previously, we copied the data hub to an external hard drive but now we are able to store the backup on one of the depository service."
  • "We struggled to stabilize the application. We had an incident which resulted in a loss of data and have terminated this solution due to lack of support from the Veeam team."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to replicate the SQL server to another site.

How has it helped my organization?

We tried to set up the application from SQL to SQL. We did this for the department, but the process took us almost a year. After we had signed off on the solution we noticed that it was affecting the performance of the SQL.

What is most valuable?

The data backup replication has been the most useful feature. Previously, we copied the data hub to an external hard drive but now we are able to store the backup on one of the depository services.

What needs improvement?

We struggled to stabilize the application. We had an incident which resulted in a loss of data and have terminated this solution due to lack of support from the Veeam team.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had issues connecting to the server, specifically connecting to the head office to be on the same network.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not tried to scale this solution but it is possible.

How are customer service and support?

Support for this solution could be improved. We have been frustrated getting help via email. When dealing with the support team, they were not knowledgable on the solution and how it works.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex and required assistance from the team at Veeam. After the installation, the solution does not function as we expected. The deployment took two weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is an expensive solution and came at a higher cost than expected. We were charged higher prices than shown on the website by partners of Veeam. We were not able to buy a few licences to begin with. We had to buy five licences from the beginning before knowing if the solution worked for us. The initial contract for the solution was not clear on which services were to be paid for and which were free.

What other advice do I have?

We first completed a POC in a test environment which worked well. However, when moving over to a production environment, we experienced some issues.

We would have benefitted from more guidance on what options were available based on our internal systems.

I would rate it a five out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
