There are too many changes because it's software-defined storage and host-based. They should reduce the number of patches and enhance product reliability and stability. When releasing new versions, they should perform thorough quality checks instead of flooding us with patches. They should prioritize quality over timeliness to minimize customer disruptions and not force customers into a cycle of fixes that interfere with daily work. The quality of releases and version control has to be improved tremendously. You don't release a version just because it's time to release a version, and then let the customers find out all the bugs in it. They have to reduce the amount of work customers have to do because of repeated fixes. I would rather have them take some extra time, do their due diligence, do their testing thoroughly, and make sure there are very few customer disruptions. The quality of the release should be very high.

Operational Infrastructure Pilot at a energy/utilities company with 10,001+ employees

When it comes to the ease of managing large volumes of data, for example, via the user interface when testing, it's quite complex. The downside isn't the solution itself, but perhaps the administration. I'm an end user, I'm an operational pilot, and on top of that, I don't administer the solution. However, I do keep an eye on it, I know how it works. I have a very clear view of the different layers used in Scality RING. It's true that this is a fairly complex issue for the average person. You really need to have a good understanding of S3, AWS-type solutions, and administration, because there are certain application layers integrated into the solution that are very intertwined. You still need a certain way of doing things and thinking that requires certain skills. It's complicated at that level, but I can't say it's insurmountable. It's not insurmountable for an administrator who has mastered it. They still need to be trained beforehand. Encryption today is not up to date. Encryption and data security need improvement. We don't have a solution for customers who need confidentiality. On the negative side, I would say that it is a fairly complex platform to administer. One person is not enough; you need at least two, if not more, for maintenance. If everything depends on it, it's clear that everything will depend on the ability of the people to manage the investment. You have to analyze the incident, you have to understand it, and you have to find the sticking point.

The advantage of using Scality RING is that all data stored is protected via Erasure Coding on the ring system. We have a ring with three locations, each with two servers, and with Erasure Coding, the data is sufficiently protected. By setting a time limit in which data can no longer be altered—typically 24 hours for regular fileshares—files are retained and then set as immutable after 24 hours in the ring, meaning they are not backed up any further. What we are currently missing and will be demanding in the new tender is an additional external backup of all data, ideally on a simple system, to safeguard against any severe local incidents so that we still have the data protected elsewhere. If all three locations were to fail, we would have nothing left. If I had a wish list for improving Scality RING, I would suggest enhancing the generation of file shares and overall administration, which feels somewhat outdated. I could envision building a dashboard that would allow for relatively simple configuration tasks because currently, it is documented, but many colleagues hesitate to engage with the system.
