What is our primary use case?
I have been working with Qualys solutions for over two years, mainly focusing on vulnerability management, compliance, and content security. My exposure to Qualys TotalCloud came through exploring cloud security capabilities and understanding how organizations can improve visibility and identify risk and strengthen their cloud security posture. However, my direct hands-on experience with Qualys TotalCloud has been limited, so I don't have a specific incident I can confidently attribute to it.
My experience with Qualys TotalCloud is understanding how it can help organizations improve cloud security visibility, identify vulnerabilities, detect misconfigurations, and manage security risks from a centralized platform. Although my direct hands-on experience is limited, I see potential value in bringing these capabilities together to improve overall cloud security management.
How has it helped my organization?
Since we are still exploring Qualys TotalCloud, I cannot point to any measurable improvements or specific business outcomes yet. However, exploring its capabilities has helped us better understand how centralized cloud security visibility, risk prioritization, and misconfiguration detection could support our security operations. I believe these features have good potential to improve efficiency and strengthen cloud security management in the future.
If we fully implement Qualys TotalCloud, I would expect better visibility into cloud assets, faster detection of misconfigurations, and improved risk prioritization. The main metrics I would look at are the number of critical security findings, mean time to detect and remediate issues, and overall compliance posture. I would also hope to see less manual effort, faster remediation, and improved efficiency in our security operations.
What is most valuable?
The features that stand out to me in Qualys TotalCloud are Cloud Security Posture Management, vulnerability detection, container security, and centralized visibility. I think the ability to identify cloud misconfigurations, prioritize security risks, and monitor cloud resources from a single platform is quite valuable. Although my direct experience with Qualys TotalCloud is limited, these are the capabilities I'm most interested in exploring further.
These features in Qualys TotalCloud would help our team identify cloud security risks more efficiently and reduce the time spent checking different systems manually. Having centralized visibility would make it easier to monitor vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and overall security posture. Compared to traditional vulnerability management tools I have worked with, Qualys TotalCloud appears to offer a broader cloud security perspective by bringing multiple security capabilities together. However, I haven't evaluated it extensively enough to make a detailed performance comparison.
I think the AI capabilities in Qualys TotalCloud have good potential, especially for identifying security risks, prioritizing vulnerabilities, and helping security teams make better decisions. From a governance and security perspective, I believe data protection, access control, transparency, and human oversight are very important. While AI-driven recommendations could help reduce manual effort and improve efficiency, security teams should still validate critical findings and remediation options. My direct experience with these AI capabilities is limited, so this is mainly my perspective on their potential.
AI-driven prediction and recommendations in Qualys TotalCloud can be very useful for security teams, especially when prioritizing critical vulnerabilities and misconfigurations. However, I would want to validate the recommendations against actual findings and check for false positives before relying on them for important security decisions.
From my understanding, Qualys TotalCloud provides centralized visibility into security risks across supported cloud environments.
I have experience working with Qualys's risk scores in vulnerability management, where we use risk scores to identify and prioritize high-risk assets. Based on these scores, we can recommend patching critical vulnerabilities, reviewing affected assets, and prioritizing remediation activities. However, I haven't directly validated these outcomes using Qualys TotalCloud's TrueRisk Insights feature, so I cannot provide a specific example from Qualys TotalCloud itself.
From my experience with Qualys VMDR, TrueRisk is useful for reducing the noise generated by a large number of CVEs. Instead of treating every vulnerability equally, it helps us prioritize risks based on factors such as severity, exploitability, threat intelligence, and asset criticality. This allows security teams to focus on the most important risks first, rather than just the total vulnerability count. I have found the risk-based approach valuable for remediation planning, although I haven't specifically measured its effectiveness within Qualys TotalCloud.
From my understanding, Qualys FlexScan offers a flexible approach to vulnerability assessment by combining different scanning methods to increase visibility. I believe this is particularly useful for organizations managing on-premises, cloud, and container environments. In my experience with Qualys VMDR and container security, having multiple assessment methods helps improve security coverage and identify risks more effectively. However, I haven't fully evaluated FlexScan across a multi-cloud environment, so I cannot confirm its overall coverage or effectiveness from direct experience.
My experience is mainly with Qualys's agent-based and network-based vulnerability scanning, along with container security. I have also explored container runtime security, including EBPF-based monitoring, which can help improve visibility into runtime activities and potential threats. I believe combining different scanning methods is useful because not every workload can be assessed using the same approach. However, I haven't directly implemented all of Qualys TotalCloud's scanning options, such as agentless, serverless, or snapshot scanning, so I cannot comment on their effectiveness from hands-on experience.
What needs improvement?
I think Qualys TotalCloud would be even more useful with simpler dashboards, easier integration with other security tools, and more automated remediation capabilities. Clear risk prioritization and detailed reporting would help security teams identify critical issues and respond more efficiently. These are areas I would be interested in exploring further as I gain more hands-on experience with the platform.
In my opinion, Qualys TotalCloud could be improved by making the dashboards more customizable and simplifying the user interface. Better integration with third-party security tools, more automated remediation options, and clearer risk prioritization would also be valuable. I would also like to see simpler configuration and more detailed reporting. These are suggestions based on what I find useful rather than issues I have personally experienced with Qualys TotalCloud.
