Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With SolarWinds, it’s easy to monitor everything and, with a little setup, everyone can help out."
"The set up was very easy. We didn't have any problems with the setup. The deployment took less than an hour."
"I can do everything remotely, including running PowerShell scripts or performing standard updates."
"SolarWinds NPM is generally used for network monitoring for all of the switches, networking equipment, as well as physical and virtual servers in the environment."
"The reports are excellent; they give good graphical information and a lot of great details about everything that's going on in my network, and it's easy to read and understand due to its visual nature."
"This product is extremely flexible and customizable, with significant out-of-the-box monitoring and, with custom properties and some ingenuity, you can get it to do pretty much anything else."
"There are a lot of valuable features with SolarWinds NPM. We can receive a lot of detailed data from the monitoring that can use useful for investigations, especially when you are troubleshooting. It is very helpful. Overall it was a very good experience."
"SolarWinds is a great solution, and I think that for anybody looking for a nice infrastructure monitoring tool, this solution will do the job."
"The Tintri product line as a whole has freed up a lot of resources from constant administration of legacy enterprise storage."

Cons

"Currently lacks integration with SMS services."
"There are issues with newer features so it can take a long time to adjust. The solution is in bad shape because of software hacks."
"The only other issue I have is that sometimes when upgrading, it becomes complicated to manage the upgrade."
"It has covered everything, so no improvement is required at their end. The only thing is the price."
"Stability is an issue. We have installed SolarWinds (Server 2016) on a dedicated physical server and as a virtual machine in a brand new Hyper-V environment with brand new servers."
"If we go for the NT license, then we have to purchase the NPM, Network Performance Monitor; that is a dependency."
"I would like to see some enhancement on the reporting side, such as making it a little bit easier to create reports or having a larger assortment of canned reports."
"This solution would benefit from expanding on the capabilities within the API."
"A better Tintri would be a "cheaper" one to get things started again."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Our customer reports that the solution is somewhat costly and licensing is a bit complicated."
"There is a permanent license and also a subscription level which has annual fees. The price of the solution is fair."
"The pricing is very expensive for SolarWinds. That's a huge disadvantage for it."
"It was inexpensive when we installed it and gradually became more expensive, but it was a very inexpensive product at first."
"We have a multi-year license for the use of this solution. There are additional costs for recourses in the environment."
"The cost of the personal perpetual license for SolarWinds NPM is approximately $2,000."
"Excluding the costs of running VMs and physical blade servers, our licensing costs run around US$200,000/year for over 60 polling engines."
"The cost is based on the number of nodes, so it is expensive when you have a lot of them."
