Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Cloud Secure is definitely the most valuable feature and being able to see file level activity. It gives real-time alerting on possible ransomware attacks and provides file security review. It helps us to see if something abnormal is happening on the system before it's too late.""Among the most valuable features are the queries and reporting that allow us to look at the utilization of resources, at how well the storage is performing, and to report on which resources are being used by which business units. We can track usage across the entire environment, across applications, business units, cost centers, etc.""Its ability to quickly inventory our resources, figure out interdependencies across them, and assemble a topology of your environment is brilliant. There is a price associated with it. Whenever you target a NetApp environment, it is included in the price but whenever you want to add different vendors, like VMware and Cisco, the price greatly spikes. Inventorization helps us a lot to visualize the environment.""It is good for giving an overview of the systems and for tracking long-term trends. It is handy for root cause analysis, e.g. it can eliminate whether storage is the cause of an issue."

"The dashboard allows you to see what's going on in the overall system.""Nagios XI helps us monitor the bandwidth of the internet connection, HTTP, DNS, active directory services, and exchange data availability. We have multiple servers to monitor databases, availability of servers, and ping.""Nagios allows us to configure any device so that we can send pager alerts when people don't have access to emails. It also allows us to schedule downtime and maintenance.""It's a monitoring agent. It's designed to do one thing. Its most valuable feature is its monitoring.""Nagios is a custom API manager, and we can expose custom APIs for our integration. This is a great feature.""The solution is pretty stable.""The installation is no problem. I've installed Nagios several times.""Nagios is stable and it's easy to use the monitoring software, which is why we chose this product."

More Nagios XI Pros →

"We don't have any issues with the stability of SolarWinds NPM.""We have configured multiple alerts for our network devices, including routers and switches, so that we are notified if any interface goes down.""What I've found most valuable about the solution is that it's scalable.""The most valuable feature is the way it monitors the environment, and how user-friendly the console is for the end-user. The interface is also very easy and it captures all the information very well.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the monitoring capabilities.""The most valuable feature is the graphical user interface.""The most valuable feature of SolarWinds NPM is the performance monitoring to see the memory, and CPU utilization.""I like the tracking feature to track devices and see where they are connected. This is very practical."

Cons
"When I did need support because I was having problems with the solution, the first or the second line just didn't understand it. They were providing this only on a software as a service basis. So, they were asking all the wrong questions.""Their pricing model needs improvement.""There is room for improving the creating and managing or modifying of reports. That is still a difficult task to do and requires knowledge beyond the storage itself. I would love to see reporting improved so that we can create reports by dragging and dropping pieces into a report form and publish a report that way.""In a perfect world we would have something built, right out-of-the-box, that can identify what we call "noise," and reduce the amount of data. You're presented with so much data when you first start the data collectors. For example, it brings back a lot of change rates that happen just because of standard computing, like profile changes and that sort of thing. Being able to identify things like that and categorize them and strip it down—and it probably can do that, I just haven't gotten there yet—would be very beneficial."

More NetApp Cloud Insights Cons →

"Open-source software is usually not user-friendly.""The technical support is variable - sometimes I get answers, but most of my tickets go unanswered.""It is really difficult to integrate Nagios XI with another system to generate logs and alert our management of failures in security infrastructure.""I would like to be able to extend it to all of our data centers, whether they are in the cloud or not. It would be helpful if I could connect everywhere.""The installation and monitoring need improvement.""We often need to develop custom plugins to get Nagios to work the way we want it to work because the features we need are not always available in Nagios.""The way Nagios displays information isn't easy for a new user to understand. It's not intuitive enough. You need to read some tutorials or be trained to understand what it's displaying. Also, I think it needs more features to improve network visibility because there are some things you can't detect.""The pricing has recently risen. I know they've changed what is covered under the license, however, it doesn't change the way we use it and adds nothing to our experience, and yet we now have to pay more."

More Nagios XI Cons →

"Robustness of network element mapping tool could be better""Technical support can be slow to respond.""We also had to be attentive to vulnerabilities, because SolarWinds NPM have some issues in that area. We had to work with our security team, so that they could help us check and backup the data, and check what they needed to secure.""It is difficult for stakeholders to translate technical requirements, which results in difficulties selecting a platform or implementing a solution.""SolarWinds needs to be improved such that it is on par with the leading products in the market.""There needs to be more integration of widgets, especially for reporting purposes.""The console could be more user-friendly. It would be better if SolarWinds updated the user interface.""GUI needs improvement with a more graphical dashboard."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The licensing model could be improved. We love that you can use it for free for looking at NetApp products. You only need licenses to look at non-NetApp products, but as soon as you do that, you start utilizing licenses that actually would have been free in the public. So, there is a bit of an anomaly in the licensing model."
  • "Be aware of the capacity licensing and understand how that works, because it is based on capacity. Getting an understanding of that is the biggest thing."

  • "Nagios Core does not have any payment, but Nagios XI requires payment for the license."
  • "For our country in North Africa, it's expensive and we could purchase another solution for that price. But it's a reasonable price if we're speaking in international terms."
  • "Nagios XI is open source."
  • "Licensing costs are reasonable."
  • More Nagios XI Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "USD $15,000 annually for maintenance."
  • "It is not an expensive product."
  • "It is too expensive."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of nodes, interfaces, and volumes."
  • "There are a lot of sub-products and it just continued to increase the price."
  • "There is a permanent license and also a subscription level which has annual fees. The price of the solution is fair."
  • "There can be fees in addition to the licensing fees if you add on."
  • "The NPM component of the system costs approximately $1,000 USD per year."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the SolarWinds NPM solution.

PeerSpot user Andrew N., Senior Network Engineer at Element Critical, says, “The "Performance Analyzer" feature is the solution's most valuable aspect. It's able to do the bounded graphs of all the interface stats, from errors to broadcasts and to current traffic. With a click of a button you're able to, in one interface, look at historical data for those items.” He also adds, “From the troubleshooting point of view, just having that peace of mind is great. And, The solution is extremely stable. We haven't had any issues in that regard. We haven't had issues with bugs, glitches, or crashes."

Daniel S., Systems and Data Warehouse Supervisor at MMSD, mentions, “The alerting and usage tracking is a valuable feature because it alerts us when we're getting near capacity on disk space, network utilization or processor utilization. It helps us manage our capacity and enables us to be proactive.”

A Senior Vice President and CIO at a financial services firm explains, “As we look to add more servers to our virtual environment and to understand the impact, the solution allows us to dig into the historical charts related to capacity planning. It also gives us visibility of spikes and allows us to track down the reasons for their occurrences. So too, it makes room for potential processes that have gotten hung or runaway and to know when it's time to reboot a server or service.”

Dinesh N., Digital Innovation at Bobcat Company, states, “The best part of the solution is the sharing display. It gives a general public ID wherein everyone can link to a public display. That's a good feature.”

Fazal A., Implementation & Support Specialist at 360Factors, comments, “We have configured multiple alerts for our network devices, including routers and switches, so that we are notified if any interface goes down. In the event an interface goes down, we have multiple reports that include availability monitoring, network uptime monitoring, and network downtime monitoring. These reports are on multiple schedules such as the end of the day, end of the last business day of the week, monthly, and quarterly. This gives us the ability to provide reports to our management and let them know the performance of our network.”
