Has good network visibility
The primary use case is for monitoring and troubleshooting. We also use it for security.   The correlation of data in Apex helps to get full visibility of the entire enterprise. Apex is where we get the end-user experience score from one to ten. Network visibility is the most valuable feature.…

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Network visibility is the most valuable feature."
"We have found the scalability capabilities to be okay."
"The dashboard is in a class of its own, with a whole other range of competing products in management of datacenters and cloud environment."
"The advantages of SCOM are that it is definitely user friendly and a more appropriate solution for what we need."
"It integrates with your Windows environment seamlessly and provides a lot of visibility on your Windows environment."
"Being able to make and customize management packs and send out notifications is very valuable."
"The inbuilt management pack that Microsoft provides is really helpful. I know it's a mature product, and they keep upgrading the management pack."
"The solution is scalable. If you want to monitor more you have to buy more licenses, but you can add on. We don't plan to increase usage."
"All our environments are automated to automatically install the SCOM agents across different domains which helps us to check the health of the server, to get the server details like IIS, app pools, Performance counters like CPU, Memory, Disk usage, etc."

Cons

"The pricing and AI can be improved."
"I had issues with SCOM 2007 and MOM 2005, regarding the view of alerts in the Console Operations."
"The configuration, especially for alerts, are somewhat lengthy."
"In a future release, they should add email notification alerts."
"GUI performance is the one aspect where I can see that improvement on it will make customers happy."
"The GI is difficult to work with and the reporting servers are also difficult."
"Even though I think there are ways that this product is superior to most other solutions on the market, there are quite a few things that it does not do alone."
"Too small of a scope in reports, need to improve a lot."
"The console feature is very poor, and it would be very good for us if this were improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's expensive."
"SCOM is very cheap because it's included in the license for the System Center suite, which is around $8,400 per CAL."
"We have an enterprise agreement that includes this product as part of it."
"If you have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, then this is part of the agreement."
"SCOM's pricing is average."
"It is more expensive than the competition."
"Two customers bought the enterprise agreement with Microsoft and paid for Software Assurance. But few customers don't buy it for Software Assurance. They just buy it and deploy it, and they think that we will be using it for the next five years."
"Our licensing fees are approximately $30 per user, per month."
"There is a license needed to use this solution and it is paid annually."
