Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is that there is no single point of failure.""The performance, reliability, and affordability has been most valuable.""It's mainly about the storage expansion, like in hyper-converged solutions.""The most valuable feature are the caching capabilities using the storage class memory.""Its technical support is excellent.""The flash ability, in terms of tiering and caching, is amazing"

"The most valuable feature is the high-availability. We have three nodes, and all data will be synched instantly through all the nodes. Even if we had a disaster where two nodes failed, containing dozens of critical machines, almost automatically, all the loads would be run on the remaining node.""Servers came pre-configured for our environment and as soon as they were in the rack, Starwind got them up and running.""The easy way everything can be configured and ready to run in less than a day is great.""Their support team is extremely helpful, and they are pretty friendly and knowledgeable.""The added speed of using standard HDD and SSD meant we could increase what services are stored on the servers without having to have additional servers.""We run probably 16 virtual machines, and all of them are now highly available, and highly redundant.""The StarWind array has greatly improved our workflow internally as it is quite easy to use and provides robust features that allow us to provide anything our clients need quickly and efficiently.""How quickly the StarWind solution replicates also gives us the confidence to know that in the event of catastrophic failure of any piece of hardware, we won't be far behind before things went wrong."

Cons
"It is scalable, but only beyond two nodes. If I go for two nodes it's not scalable. I need to build a complete cluster from the beginning if I'm going for two nodes.""The management tool within this solution could be improved. We would also like to be able to access services like Azure when using this solution.""I think the online documentation needs a lot of work and so do the sizing tools.""It is difficult to get a hardware compatibility certification for the solution.""More optimization could be done in terms of mirroring.""Documentation management could be improved"

More Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct Cons →

"The web-managed interface (a separate VM) could be better.""One area for improvement of the solution is that I had to get Windows, which I really didn't want because of the extra maintenance or overhead, as well as viruses, etc. It's going to take time for them to get their Linux to that point. They already have Linux but it's not as mature and they don't really support it on HCAs. They have it for individuals who want to use it on their servers, but not on HCAs.""Shipping options should be explained in detail and offer more white glove delivery options even if it comes at an additional cost for some SMBs without docks.""I think some performance metrics would be nice to see, especially on the storage side.""The only thing I have run into is that I did want to add more hard drives into the host, so that we could look at doing a RAID 10, and the hard drive prices were pretty expensive... that's pretty nit-picky and I don't think it has anything to do with StarWind itself. I think it's more on whomever they work with for their hardware.""The management console could use a facelift.""The StarWind Command Center web portal could use some work.""What would have to be done urgently is the adaptation of the hardware to the configuration."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "With the data center licensing and everything that is connected to that, this solution is relatively costly."
  • "Cost-wise the product is one of the more affordable within the category of products."
  • More Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "A desired feature or service would be the ability to have a hardware subscription plan that ensures routine hardware updates in conjunction with hyper-converged software."
  • "Its cost was reasonable."
  • "This was all completed at an affordable price point for an SMB, which was also a key element for an NPO."
  • "When I researched they came the most cost-effective."
  • "The other solutions we were looking at were priced much higher than this and they didn't necessarily have full redundancy... Nutanix and VxRail were in the final running... but it came down to our price point."
  • "I honestly feel that there's no one else in the market doing what they're doing for the price point that they're doing it at. That's why I asked them about investing in their company. I think that the options they're providing and the software that they have is sort of revolutionary for the price point... The total cost was $24,400."
  • "The Nutanix piece was about $45,000, getting close to $50,000 with all the licensing involved, whereas the StarWind was less than half of that, after Microsoft licensing and such."
  • "We looked at Nutanix and found it did almost the same thing but for more money. In fact, StarWind was nearly one-third of the price; it cost us £36,000. That includes five years of monitoring... The Nutanix was near enough £110,000 for relatively the same amount of performance and storage."
