An easy-to-use solution that can be used for configuration management
We use Git for configuration management Git is an easy-to-use solution that can be used for parallel working. Git's user interface could be improved. I have been using Git for almost eight years. Git is a stable solution. Git is a scalable solution. Around 2,000 users use the solution in our…

Configuration management features improve workflow but require a steep learning curve
I need to work more with Helix Core to identify specific areas for improvement. However, it has an extensive feature set that leads to a steep learning curve, where users need to learn quite a bit of features to work with it effectively. While its customization is not an issue, the GUI might not appeal to everyone.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use the tool to store codes."
"Git is a powerful and mature tool that all software engineers use, whether they use it from the command line with the original version or integrate it with various tools. It helps by promoting collaboration and eliminating problems with code in separate locations. This greatly boosts productivity since you're not lost in a massive local repository, and everything remains organized."
"There wasn't any instability at all because when we did our first automation deployment, we hit 100% with zero bugs introduced."
"You can have a central code repository using Git and have local code branches."
"Git is a product everyone uses, so it's almost inescapable. I like the fact that there is a large ecosystem around it. You can bolt various graphical user interfaces onto it or sign up for various repositories like GitHub and AWS CodeCommit. Git has a large community, so there are lots of resources and knowledge bases you can use."
"I like Git's merging feature. For example, say there is an instance where I am working on the same code as another developer. Git automatically merges the work of two developers on the same file. If I'm working on line 50 and he's working on 60, and we both commit, it mergest automatically."
"So far, the product has been stable. Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight to nine out of ten."
"I use the solution for website management."
"I find the configuration management features of Helix Core particularly valuable."
"The excellent traceability of all changes made to the product and the support for collaborative work."
"The customer service and support are excellent."
"Perforce has given us the capability to manage our deployments on different environments."
"Perforce is very fast, even for very huge assets."
"Technical support for routine issues and tutoring beginners is absolutely the best."
"The code comparison functionality and the command line options for automation are valuable features."

Cons

"Git could improve the merge conflicts."
"The main problem for me is the frequent upgrades in the solution because every other upgrade is a minefield. When you do the upgrade, there is always something that doesn't work."
"In our company, we sometimes feel the need to have certain kinds of reports, but we never get those customized reports in Git's dashboard."
"If another person raises a pull request under the same ID assigned to the previous person, and both parties modify the tool, their changes will be grouped together in the same request until it is closed, which is an issue."
"Synchronization could be better. Sometimes when you create a branch and merge it into another branch, I think it's a bit complex for no reason. The initial setup is also tricky when you do it for the first time."
"The GUI needs to be improved."
"About the configuration it is a little bit difficult, it can be improved."
"The tool is complicated for a beginner. You need to have some training to use it. It is also hard to find a parameter."
"There are scalability issues when there is too much traffic, such as when there are extremely huge amount of calls by APIs."
"The part of Perforce that could be most improved is its automatic resolving of code merge conflicts."
"The offline versioning needs to be improved."
"It scales well, but installation and server management gets technically very complicated when the installation grows."
"However, it has an extensive feature set that leads to a steep learning curve, where users need to learn quite a bit of features to work with it effectively."
"It has an extensive feature set that leads to a steep learning curve, where users need to learn quite a bit of features to work with it effectively."
"Perforce does not appear to have an enterprise scale software test environment. We sometimes serve as their software QA department."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Git is free and you don't have to pay for it."
"This is an open-source solution, so there are no licensing fees associated with it, and no extra, 'hidden' charges."
"We use the open-source version."
"As a student, I didn't have to pay for the license."
"Git is an open-source software."
"I am not required to pay due to the small number of users we have. We have a small user base, and we are not using the enterprise version."
"There are some extra costs to Git, but it depends on your use case."
"The platform is less expensive."
