Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It simplifies everything. It gives you a single place to go if you need support or if you need to expand.""The real benefit of this solution is that it is pre-architected with the ability to scale-up and scale-out.""The ease of expansion is the most valuable feature.""From the integration standpoint, it is a lot easier to integrate than a lot of people initially felt. Being able to leverage either block or file capabilities of the storage is something that has been beneficial.""There are very many features, but from experience, the single point of contact for support has been valuable to our customers.""For anyone who needs the flexibility of moving around profiles from physical device to physical device, it really adds an additional layer of virtualization.""The initial setup is not complex. It is user-friendly since it is a single solution with all the components delivered in one package.""The solution can be innovative when it comes to cloud computing storage and networking."

"The most valuable features of this solution are fast deployment, security, and it is easy to upgrade.""The provisioning is very fast. It’s not a problem for us to achieve the goals of the client.""The HPE Hyper Converged solution is used in a hybrid cloud configuration. We assess the disk space and partition additional capacity.""The most valuable features are resiliency and data protection.""What I really like about this program, is that it needs little space and it works really fast, so it saves us time.""Ease of management, as I come from a software background, and I'm responsible for IT overall. I can get in there and turn some nuts and bolts and make things happen without any trouble.""It is a stable solution...Those who want flexibility, ease of use, and a simple support system can opt for HPE.""The most valuable feature is the in-built backup system. The backup speed is also excellent."

Cons
"We would like more integration with some other HCI solutions so we can take advantage of other opportunities.""They could improve their technical support team. They need to have a specific phone number for you to call in for the FlexPod solution. Some of the partner support knows if it is for FlexPod, they will get you to the right department.""FlexPod will do very well on the average app, but there's room for improvement in performance and the data center side.""The ability to manage the templates across sites. We would like to easily take out the configuration of one FlexPod and copy it over, just making minor changes. There is a way to do it, but it's clumsy.""It would be very helpful if the upgrades for Cisco, VMware, and NetApp could be bundled together and performed at the same time.""There are too many drivers and software combined all together, and we need to have compatibility between all of them.""I would like to see more cloud-centric modules that are specific to applications and more software-based solutions. That's all that is missing.""With the UCS X-Series, I would like to see the fabric interconnects in the chassis. Instead of hanging out so the chassis is 7U, you are increasing your footprint to 9U with the fabric enhancer, where some of the competing solutions are 7U and have collapsed that network fabric into the chassis. This is another thing that I would like to see from Cisco, though not really on the NetApp side since that is pretty solid."

More FlexPod XCS Cons →

"If the solution could further compress the data, it would use less storage.""The solution is not very stable.""I would like to see more deduplication.""Installation and setup could be easier.""The price can be improved. We would like to see support for some open source virtualization technology like for example KVM.""Scalability requires using additional nodes.""The solution can be improved on the management side. More management features should be added to future releases.""Data protection and optimization: It is really weak. They do not offer deduplication or compression."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
  • More FlexPod XCS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
  • "With this solution, I buy everything together, pre-packaged, pre-installed, and in just 15 minutes, it's installed."
  • "The price per value compared to other solutions, like Nutanix and SimpliVity. (We made the deal before approval of HPE SimpliVity deal)."
  • "Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
  • "It is an expensive solution, however. If they could adjust the pricing, that would be helpful."
  • "The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
  • "The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
