Recovery from cyber attacks has become faster and more reliable with strong data isolation and encryption
My impression of the administrative interface of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is that it is very user-friendly and pretty intuitive. Regarding the solution's ability to automate data recovery tasks, we have not had to do mass recoveries yet, but we know we can do it with the tool and we do restores out of Networker. Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is absolutely able to protect our company's critical data. We know how it protects our critical data because we are watching it all the time; it is locking snapshots, protecting and isolating our backups, and we know our backups are there if we need to recover. We are using the recent feature addition for enhancing data encryption. As far as I know, the feature has been good because it encrypts the data. My advice for someone or some company that is considering the solution is to understand the manpower involved because it does require a lot of attention; it does not run by itself. Once it is set up, it does run, but it requires quite a bit of admin. I would rate this product an eight out of ten overall.

Unified backups have protected virtual machines and applications and optimize storage efficiency
Regarding automated disaster recovery, we have not used Veritas NetBackup automated disaster recovery because according to the RFP terms and conditions, we are not supposed to have automated failover or failback, as we are a government entity and cannot violate the rules of the RFP. My feedback about granular recovery in Veritas NetBackup is that we have been doing verifications of the backed-up data to restore from point to point and time to time, focusing on file level or database level. When it comes to integration with cloud services, we have not started because we are a government entity and are not allowed to store any data in the cloud at this time. From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong. When I initiate a backup from my laptop or server to the appliance or the tape media using Veritas NetBackup, the encryption channels are not strong, and there are not many options available. Whatever is there is by default and not changeable. We cannot modify any encryption facilities, and security is a big concern nowadays, so you need to look into that. Regarding the functionality part of Veritas NetBackup, I think this encryption feature should be stronger and integrated from point to point, not just at specific levels. When I initiate a backup, all the communication channels involved should be encrypted until it reaches the endpoint, meaning from client to server, server to client, and client device.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"The biggest return on investment for me when using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is that if we had an attack, we would be able to recover in hours instead of weeks or months, which is a lot of risk reduction."
"The reporting is very good, with all of the details highlighted and very clear."
"Deduplication is the most valuable feature as it reduces the backup time and provides backup of a single copy of data"
"It covers all kinds of different architectures, plus it's very user-friendly and it is very reliable."
"The solution is stable."
"I like that it's enterprise-capable; it can handle multiple operating systems, multiple database types, and a lot of different backup use cases, making it very flexible."
"I think NetBackup has vast coverage, and I think that's why it's a great product."
"The Dedup and file storage is great and very valuable."
"The most valuable feature of Veritas NetBackup is the protection policies or protection module."

Cons

"I would like more visibility into what is going on with the individual backup images and how they are being scanned, so there are some automation and visibility features that could be enhanced."
"On the support side, I think Veritas needs to improve because the support is really lacking; otherwise, the product itself is a good product."
"Setup implementation."
"The interface should be improved."
"This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox."
"Within their product lineup, they need to consolidate down to one product. Veritas doesn't have one product that does everything. So, Veritas can do everything, but you basically need to run two products. I would like them to combine all the capabilities into one release."
"It was very complicated, and it required a lot of work in terms of management. We have moved to Rubrik. One of the reasons for getting rid of Veritas NetBackup was the fact that at one point, we had the support staff with 12 to 15 people to manage Veritas NetBackup, whereas, with Rubrik, I'm the only one managing Rubrik. There is one more person who works with me mostly due to the fact that in case I'm not around, someone else knows what to do, but I'm the only one who is a full-time manager of Rubrik. The complexity of Veritas required a large staff to manage it. We had daily issues that had to be looked into and resolved. A lot of these issues revolved around Veritas' handling of VMware, which is why first we moved VMware off Veritas. After we did that, we were also able to reduce our staff count. Their licensing is a disaster. It is extremely complicated. In most cases, Veritas themselves can't understand their own licensing."
"The interface should be improved."
"Veritas NetBackup isn't easy to implement; it's a little bit hard compared to other solutions like Data Protector for HPE, and you have to struggle to learn a lot of features that Veritas NetBackup offers to customers."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Our license is capacity-based."
"Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
"If you want to have more scalability you have to purchase more licenses. The license is annually and there are a lot of different licensing depending on the number of terabytes needed. It is not based on per-user, core, or servers. You can backup anything you want using the purchased terabyte space."
"We are happy with the pricing that we have, but it's expensive."
"The licensing model for this solution is very powerful."
"Its price is quite reasonable. The cost depends on the depreciation and the volume. It also depends on the infrastructure. If your infrastructure increases, you would need some more licenses."
"Price-wise, most of the backup products are similarly priced, and NetBackup is the same."
"Pricing is expensive, so it could be lower."
