A resilient and reliable solution that has many load-balancing technologies and provides high availability
People who want to buy the solution must create a scorecard of Dell PowerPath against other products. They must run database tests. They must consider factors like pricing, performance, ease of use, visibility, and reliability. They must also run tests to understand which product recovers faster. Overall, I rate the tool an eight out of ten.
Naveen Radhwani - PeerSpot reviewer
Provides good performance, stability, and complete data security
Our upcoming investments would be prioritized around a hybrid cloud solution because we ourselves promote the cloud in the market. We are the premium service provider for AWS, so we have that inclination toward cloud computing. From the experience that we had during the pandemic, we are looking for some kind of hybrid solution for our environment. NetApp should focus on a hybrid cloud solution because none of the media houses are opting for cloud storage. The files are quite heavy, and it becomes quite difficult to maintain them on the cloud. If NetApp can provide such technology and fill the gap of storing media files in the cloud, it would give them an advantage.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The product is very reliable."
"The most valuable feature of the solution stems from the fact that disaster recovery scenarios are very good and easy to use in Dell PowerPath since it is available in a simplified form."
"It provides a high availability and will increase the performance of any server or operating system."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is migration without disruptions."
"The user interface is good."
"The solution has improved our performance, reliability, and redundancy."
"OS-aware multipathing is a valuable feature of the product."
"We have found the solution to be quite flexible and very scalable."
"ONTAP has improved my organization by lowering budget costs. Deduplication, compression, compaction, SnapMirror, SnapWall, the transaction happens from one to the other. It's serving our needs just as expected."
"We bought it for a couple reasons. One, it took advantage of our existing storage because we could front-end that storage. It also allowed us, through native replication, to set up a DR site, which we're working towards. And three, that DR site, in 2020, is going to the cloud. NetApp has a nice solution for that. And our production in 2022 may actually go to the cloud. So all that is already in place, no additional tools. You can use the same SnapMirror and SnapVault technology to get there."
"We have been using it for our entire environment, so we use it in file shares and in our VDI environment, at least for user data. That has reduced our user login times by about 50 percent."
"The product is reliable. We always want to have access to the files, and the system has to be up 99.9 percent of the time."
"We are going the direction of automation in the cloud. It has flexibility and supportability around NetApp solutions and products."
"We have been able to save about 10 to 15% on space using the space consumption features."
"Security played a major role while finalizing the product. The ONTAP technology was quite stringent while creating partitions and in other such scenarios so that the data is fully secured and not accessible without permission."
"Their SAN storage is great."

Cons

"The solution is quite stable, although they have not quite worked out all of the kinks."
"While I utilize it for data migration, I would love to do that data migration in a GUI from an ease of use perspective."
"Customers do not choose PowerPath unless they have Unix or Linux."
"The product's price is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"The solution should provide extensive reports on backups and backup failures."
"The product must adapt to other storage technologies like HPE 3PAR."
"Although PowerPath is very mature and has been on the market for more than 15 years there are still a lot of bugs that have been profiled with PowerPath, specifically, during any OS upgrade."
"The technical support is good but they are not available all the time."
"I would like it to be more user-friendly. When you open the main dashboard, anyone should be able to know exactly what is going on, even without a tech background. Minimal training should be required."
"The config could be a little easier. It's not entirely difficult, but it could be a somewhat easier. I have seen other vendors make it easier."
"I'm waiting for the NVMe, end-to-end."
"They could maybe offer even better documentation."
"The GUI of NetApp ONTAP is an area with certain shortcomings that need to be considered for improvement."
"I need to be able to validate how the host is performing from the storage, as I am concerned about the host performance and storage connectivity to the host."
"It is not as good as we need from a performance perspective. At the moment, we are always running out of CPU on the controllers, even the high-end solutions."
"They could lower prices so my management doesn't complain about cost"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is expensive."
"The product is a little bit expensive."
"Pricing is good. I don't have any issues with the pricing of this solution."
"The price of the solution is fair."
"There are no additional costs associated with the product."
"I rate the product's price an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is affordable, and ten is really expensive. Dell PowerPath is an expensive tool."
"There are two consumption methods: pay as you go and subscription. Pay as you go... is a little expensive but worth it."
"They could reduce the price."
"There are specific workloads where some vendors provide better value, but in general, NetApp has done a far better on price than other vendors."
"We have been able to save about 3TB to 5TB of storage. We still need to do more on the compression bit, then provisioning, to save more going forward."
"ONTAP is expensive, but most storage systems are now-a-days and everything is included with the license - there are no additional fees."
"The data compression and deduplication have kept us from buying more disks these past three years."
"The licensing prices are really high."
"We have a wholesale contract with NetApp. We also have NetApp ONTAP On-Demand activation for certain things. We also have some preferential pricing for licenses. The licensing that I see here doesn't apply to other clients in the field. NetApp is expensive, but so are the competitors, making it hard to ascertain precise retail value. However, based on my perspective, NetApp pricing appears competitive."
