It is a stable product that cuts down on our support costs
This is a hard one. It has just been a really solid product. We have not had very many issues at all with it. The only minor issue that we have had with Datacom is in the installation guide: Some of the sizings for the databases have not really worked out for us, so we had to go in and resize them. Also, we would run out of space and things like that. Those are the only minor things.

Create essential reporting scripts with simplicity but has some operational challenges
We mainly create functions and scripts required for reporting The product is not complex; I do not have to create stored procedures, functions, or views. It's just simple to use. There is general room for improvement. I have been using it for five years. I have faced stability issues, mainly…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup is fairly straightforward for a mainframe product."
"Scalability is definitely one thing. The size of the database can grow without any issues. We've got one database table that's got over a billion rows in it; quite a bit of data, and it handles access like a champ."
"It definitely cuts down on our support costs. I do not get woken up in the middle of the night very often for a problem with Datacom."
"It is a solid product."
"Nowadays, CA is doing a lot of improving as far as online maintainability of definitions, which is a huge improvement over the past. I'm able to do a lot of changes without any outage."
"The product's feature of data transaction works fast."
"A very good, open-source platform."
"The security is great."
"It's one of the fastest databases in the market. It's easy to use. From a maintenance perspective it's a good product. The segmentation, or architecture of the product is different than other databases such as Oracle. So even in 10 years, the data distribution for such segments will not affect other segments. The query performance of the product, for complex queries, is very good. It has good integration with Hadoop."
"Very sophisticated routing control and priority messaging capabilities"
"Scalable (Massive) Parallel Processing (MPP) – The ability to bring to bear large amounts of compute against large data sets with Greenplum and the EMC DCA has proven itself to be very effective."
"The most valuable feature is that it's really customizable."
"The solution improved our site reliability."

Cons

"For the "no-outage maintainability" of things, they are making improvements as we speak, but there is definitely still room for more of that."
"The only minor issue that we have had with Datacom is in the installation guide: Some of the sizings for the databases have not really worked out for us, so we had to go in and resize them."
"Initial setup is a little complex. It took around two weeks to deploy."
"I would like to see the performance of the administration portal improved and additional messaging protocols."
"The initial setup is somewhat complex and the out-of-the-box configuration requires optimization."
"It will be very useful if we could communicate with other database types from Greenplum (using a database link)."
"The debugging capabilities and testing flexibilities need to be improved."
"The fact that a single queue can't be distributed across multiple instances/nodes is a major disadvantage."
"The solution needs improvement on performance."
"Other tools besides RabbitMQ provide good TPS and HA."
