Ease of backup and restore improves data management with reliable support
The interface of BDRSuite Backup & Replication is pretty intuitive. Regarding their marketing strategy, I'm very bad at marketing. I always get a little edgy when people try to shove their product in my face. There are two sides to the story. If you don't know something exists, you might not even start to look for it unless you really know that you need it. If you are explicitly looking for a solution, then you'll find it. People that don't know that they should do backup don't have a place in IT. I rate BDRSuite Backup & Replication 8.5 out of 10.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has improved our business continuity."
"If our country is hit by a meteor, I have secured data in another country on the other side of the world, then I can start the restore process immediately with this solution."
"The compression, encryption, and deduplication features are fabulous and great stuff."
"Its ease of use and price are most valuable. It is simple and straightforward. Someone who has never used any backup software will easily understand it from the first installation. It is that simple. Price-wise, it is much cheaper than its counterparts."
"The most important features are the backup and the availability of the Universal Explorer. The in-transit compression is great."
"The scalability is good. It can scale. Adding a new server to a foreign location is easy."
"The most valuable feature is the Hyper-V backup - it's just one click. I don't have to worry about it."
"It's something that sits there and does its job, and does it well."
"For us, disaster recovery is the most valuable feature."
"The feature that was most valuable was that we could restore one mailbox and we could do different backups for different databases."
"Reliable Utility that would help a lot to automate backups and recovery operations"
"I'm not sure in dollars our ROI, but the system has definitely paid for itself time and time again."
"If you have an idea of what you are doing, it's very flexible and very stable."
"The database it provides is the most valuable feature for us."
"In terms of actually, reliably, backing things up, Data Protector is superior to the other products that we've used in-house."
"The best and biggest improvement for us is that we can rely on the backups it provides."

Cons

"The only place where I would really want to see improvement, out the gate, is more granular scheduling."
"We have not been able to move our backups from one drive to another one."
"With the free version of Vembu, you receive three virtual machine backups. However, if you buy the NetworkBackup Enterprise version, you don't have access to the features seen in the free version."
"Whenever I've tried to contact the tech support, they say upgrade to the latest version. The problem with that is the old backups need to be all done again because it appears that on each version upgrade the old backups no longer continue."
"We sent a letter complaining about how the lack of customer service has caused us problems. We're actually dumping Vembu and we're going with Veeam, and we're asking for our money back."
"The user interface isn't that good. I don't think that the product is user-friendly."
"Live support would be helpful. I've communicated with them via email and through incidents."
"We do a lot of internal automation, so the Vembu API definitely has some gaps. The Vembu API could definitely use some improvement. We do rely a lot on automation outside of just the regular interface. We've noticed that the Vembu GUI is good, but we do leverage the APIs for a lot of stuff, and there's definitely some room for improvement there."
"Every upgrade is such a headache. For example, we currently have to upgrade to a new version, but somehow the connection to storage isn't happening because there are issues with the library."
"Many of our users complain about the GUI. You still need to rely on the command line interface. Because it originated as a Unix system, Data Protector is still a command line-driven solution, which makes it seem rather dated compared to systems that are built around a GUI from day one. It doesn't affect the functionality, but some people don't find it user-friendly."
"The UX dates back to a very historic past."
"Microfocus needs to build a partnership with other vendors in addition to HPE as far as cloud consolidation of backups."
"OpenText Data Protector is not user-friendly, especially for cloud backup."
"I am not happy with the support structure within HPE when things go wrong."
"While technically it's a good product, the technical support is an area that could use a lot of improvement."
"Recently, clients have raised concerns about the lack of comprehensive documentation for Data Protector."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When they changed to the newest version (4.1), they have more VMs allowed on the free version. Before, there were only three VMs allowed on the free version, and if you needed to back up more than three VMs, you had to get the paid version. Now, you can have up to 10 VMs on the free version."
"The price for BDRSuite is justified."
"Its price is fair, and they still allow perpetual licensing, which is extremely important for us. They also have offline licensing. I am not aware of any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees. In terms of the affordability of the solution for businesses with a tight budget, you aren't going to beat it."
"The price point of this software is good, and I can do everything I need. In terms of the affordability of the solution for businesses with a tight budget, we're on a small business enterprise package, which is half the price of the regular enterprise package. It's super affordable. The features you get for it are enterprise-level. I'm very happy with the pricing."
"The pricing could have been cheaper."
"It has actually benefited my operation a fair bit. VMware requires a special hardware while Hyper-V runs on pretty much anything. It doesn't require any special hardware, so it saves a bit of money. Because Vembu does Hyper-V backup, there is no limit on how many VMs you can have. The newer version has a 100 VM limit on the single license, which has been greatly beneficial, because on one host a 100 VMs is a fair bit."
"It's just the license per host with one CPU, but if I did choose offsite cloud replication, they do charge for the data. They charge per gigabyte, or something like that. They have plans."
"This solution provides much more value than other products that provide similar functionality. If price is a consideration for anyone who is looking to improve their backup processes, they owe it to themselves to look at the Vembu BDRSuite."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
