A cloud solution for warehousing with a troubleshooting feature
The initial setup is straightforward. It's based on user requirements. We also conduct heat mapping using a couple of tools. The only requirement is to understand the technical or configuration aspects from the user's end and then configure it. Mist takes no more than 15 to 20 minutes for a particular deployment. You need to understand the end user's environment and have a concrete plan on whether it's a greenfield installation or an existing one, considering the density and height. Based on that, we need to develop a passive heat map. Then, you need to discuss with the user to understand exactly what needs to be configured and what they require in their environment. Based on that, you can proceed with the installation. Additionally, you can perform post-installation heat mapping to ensure it matches the earlier heat map. I rate the initial setup an eight out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

We saw the benefits of Auvik almost immediately after deploying it
Auvik and SaaS Management complement each other well. The Auvik portal's single pane of glass interface provides a seamless user experience, allowing us to easily switch to the SaaS product. While their data may not be directly integrated, these two separate products offer valuable functionalities. SaaS Management helps identify shadow IT by tracking user sign-ins to company accounts, and Auvik excels in network backup and monitoring. Organizations using Auvik with a concern about shadow IT across various groups can leverage SaaS Management for efficient discovery. This tool provides insights into user account sign-ins and application usage, giving you a more comprehensive view beyond just the network monitoring capabilities offered by Auvik. Auvik boasts a user-friendly interface that organizes information by office location, allowing for quick access to individual sites. Additionally, a global alert portal provides a centralized view of issues across our entire network. The network map and dashboard provide a near real-time view of how our network is connected, with about 90 percent accuracy. It's a big improvement, especially since it's automated and now supports switch stacks, allowing us to see not only if there's a stack but also how many members it has within the map itself. Auvik's user-friendly network map automatically lays out our entire network, allowing us to quickly click on any device and delve into its specific details for in-depth analysis. We saw the benefits of Auvik almost immediately after deploying it. Once we set up SNMP, a requirement for the software, and entered the discovery credentials, we were able to roll it out to multiple offices. Within days, we had all the locations monitored and backed up. Auvik has significantly improved our ability to resolve network issues quickly. By allowing us to examine alert logs for potential precursors to outages, and to determine if the problem is widespread or confined to a single location or device, Auvik significantly reduces our mean time to resolution. Auvik allows us to spend less time on setup, maintenance, and resolution. We are able to use that saved time to work on other projects that we are trying to roll out.

It's intuitive and allows you to manage your devices from a single pane of glass
We're refreshing our networks and looking at the new Meraki MX250 firewall, one of the higher-end security devices. We're happy with what the devices can do, but they lack a few features found on older firewalls or competing products. For instance, you should be able to see if something has been blocked by a firewall rule by looking at a live log of traffic moving through the device. It helps you troubleshoot issues and understand if your rules are working. You need to ensure the firewall is blocking the right things. That's unavailable in the Meraki Dashboard. You have to send the logs to a log server. We use SolarWinds locally, but it's not natively built into Meraki. We're also using Cisco ISA and another tool called Smoothwall.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

"The single dashboard is a valuable feature."
"We can manage the entire system across the network and troubleshoot the pain points."
"The discovery portion of it is extremely valuable. It allows us to get a good inventory of what is actually on a client's network. You can turn on TrafficInsights, which is basically a NetFlow feature, for troubleshooting. It allows you to get more detailed information on what's going on with a particular device. So, you could determine why a client is complaining that the internet is slow at 1:00 p.m. every day."
"People typically use Auvik to look at NetFlow data, but we went for it because we wanted a convenient cloud-based platform to collect data that we don't have to host locally. We like that having space available is not our problem. You can deploy an agent on your network through a virtual machine running on a secure Linux operating system. It's a secure product, and the data we need is available in the cloud."
"Credential management is the most valuable feature. It's helpful to have everything in one essential place."
"The most valuable feature for us in Auvik is the network topology."
"I like the quick mapping. I can put a customer in, and I can put the Auvik monitor in, and then probably within about half an hour to an hour, I can see most of the map."
"I've found the topology mesh graph helpful, and I like the other features that factor into my work with Kubernetes."
"The most valuable features include the inventory management and alerting capabilities."
"Auvik makes it super simple to have sub-tenants and you can then view high-level details from the "parent" tenant, which is our MSP interface, while also diving deep into the client-side and having full access there for assigning client-level permissions."
"What I love most about the Meraki Dashboard are its user-friendly features."
"Meraki Dashboard centralizes control of all our equipment into one cloud-based console, so we can manage it from anywhere. We can resolve problems remotely outside of business hours because it is on the cloud. You can use the dashboard to change security settings or configure routers and switches."
"It can analyze the traffic that it is picking up from what may be a rogue access point, and it is able to identify those and send relevant notifications."
"The most valuable features are the ease of use and a single-pane-of-glass that allows us to identify issues across the entire network from one dashboard."
"We like how Meraki Dashboard lets you manage all the devices in a single pane of glass. The dashboard is intuitive and easy to use. They are constantly updating the functionality. Switches from other vendors have the same features for the life of the device, but Meraki is always improving."
"You don't have to be a network engineer to use it."
"Meraki dashboard deserves an Oscar."
"There is no need to swap the hardware at all the locations, and importing the APs into the Dashboard was a simple and quick process."

"The Wi-Fi side needs improvement."
"The technical support needs improvement."
"Tying in with the IP address and the network mapping could be improved."
"The visualization of network mapping is good. The only complaint would be that VLANs don't necessarily show up as a regular LAN does. They do show up, but there is some manual tuning you have to do to make that look perfect."
"For the most part, it's great for visualizing the network mapping/topology for our organization. However, when complex VLAN networks are involved, sometimes, the picture can get a little cloudy. It would definitely be nice if there was some way of choosing a VLAN to view or something like that. They should definitely improve the handling of multiple networks and VLANs."
"I wish there was a way to reduce the cost somehow."
"The actual adding of networks, systems, and everything like that is fairly easy, but the problem that I have is getting the metrics out. Specifically, if you go to the Auvik webpage, sign in, and go through the alerts and everything else, they don't offer any plasma display with a red light, green light, or stop light indicating this device is in an error state, down, etc. To get around this, we have to use their API. I had to code an entire interface to work around that lack of information."
"Auvik could have better compatibility with more devices. The devices that we're using are essential within our network infrastructure. It would be great to access the full range of features that some of the other ones do, such as the device configuration backups and the configuration change alert."
"While Auvik excels in network management with a user-friendly interface, its customization and reporting features could benefit from improvement."
"It needs flexibility for the pooling of information. Because it is fully automated, it is pooling everything from the device from a given category. There is no way to exclude things that are not important or if you want to temporarily remove them to see statistics of other things. For example, we get about 100 MB from Auvik. We are unable to limit this. We would rather stop monitoring something, since some features will always give you alerts, because they shouldn't be monitored. However, it is impossible to exclude them, e.g., the internal interface. If somebody disconnects the device from the internal interface, we get an alert. So, this is something that is really painful for us. More flexibility would solve most of our issues."
"I think this product could be improved with a CLI for more directives."
"One area that could use improvement in the Meraki Dashboard is user-friendliness when navigating to port configurations."
"For my purposes, I don't need to see any other features added to the Meraki Dashboard. I have no criticisms and I do like the tool. If I had a criticism for it, it would be about the pricing because it could be a little less, but again, for the service that you get, I won't complain about that too much."
"This solution can be quite complicated to configure and manage, unless you have a technical person with specific knowledge working on it."
"Meraki Dashboard could improve integration with non-Cisco platforms."
"Meraki Dashboard could improve the user interface by making it more user-friendly. The configuring can at times be difficult."
"The coverage has been an issue for us."
"It's a very complex system. Customers have told me that sometimes there are lots of advanced features that are available and that you can change in the dashboard, but sometimes it's very hard to know what they are."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is expensive."
"I would like it to be more cost-effective or affordable. It's not the most expensive one, but it's also not the cheapest solution out there. You pay month to month. It is what it is. It is not for everyone, but it depends on what you're looking for in your budget."
"I'm unfamiliar with other network monitoring applications, as I've been using Auvik for so long, but it is one of the more expensive solutions. However, we have used the product to troubleshoot different issues. For example, one of our clients had an issue where their phones were constantly going down, and nobody could figure out the problem. We put Auvik on the network and found a loop in their switches, so it simplifies our lives, increases resolution speed, and makes us look like competent technicians."
"Relative to others, it is affordable. It is not terrible. The Performance licensing is a little expensive for what you get, but the standard licensing is fine."
"The pricing is by device. We have 75 devices, which is a little more than we really need. With school and volume discounts, it is still a little over $16,000 annually. Our WiFi access points are not being billed, but all our switches and routers are."
"We have a lot of problems with licensing in many other solutions, but I've never run into a problem with Auvik licensing. That's a pretty good vote of confidence."
"Auvik Network Management is moderately priced."
"We have licenses per year. It is on a network device, so we pay for switches and firewalls. Everything else is included, e.g., computers, access points, and printers."
"The pricing is kind of steep, but it's worth the price. There's no beating around the bush. It's an expensive solution, but it's really the best solution there is for us."
"The Meraki Dashboard has more competitive pricing."
"The price of Meraki Dashboard is not expensive because knowing that it is a cloud-based solution has its benefits."
"I’m not sure of the exact cost, however, it’s my understanding the Meraki WiFi is around $800. That’s for a three-year license. It’s about $150 a year."
"My view is that it's expensive, but it's the best."
"The pricing for a small setup is only a few hundred dollars a year. The fee is subscription-based."
"Licensing fees are paid on a yearly basis."
"You don't have to pay for the dashboard."
"The solution is currently the most expensive on the market."
