Software Engineer at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
Automated data pipelines have transformed complex workloads and now deliver faster, reliable insight
The standout feature is the Data Awareness Engine, in my opinion the intelligent control plane. Unlike traditional orchestrators that run tasks based on schedules or external events, Ascend.io understands the state of the data. If a source file changes or transformation logic is updated, the engine automatically identifies only the impacted data partitions and recalculates exclusively those. This eliminated the need to write complex logic for partial reloads and ensures that downstream data is always consistent with the latest version of the code. Ascend.io impacted my organization positively because it helped me solve my problem by solving our operational maintenance crisis. Previously, every time a Spark job failed, we had to manually intervene to clean up partial data and restart the pipeline. With Ascend.io, infrastructure management and checkpointing are fully automated. It drastically reduced our technical debt, allowing our data engineers to focus on business logic rather than cluster management or writing boilerplate ingestion code. Code reduction eliminated 60% to 70% of custom Spark code. Operational cost saw a 30% reduction in man-hours dedicated to pipeline maintenance and incident management. The meantime to recovery reduced from hours to minutes due to automatic failure tracking. With Ascend.io, you write what you want, not how to do it. It is a declarative approach and reduces code by 80%. This is very important to me. A good feature is the integrated lineage because an instant visualization of data flow across all components is very useful.

Automation Engineer at a educational organization with 11-50 employees
Modular automations have streamlined onboarding and now orchestrate delayed multi-day workflows
Zapier offers the best features through the capability to make our own webhooks and the delay functionalities, which stand out in Zapier. The delay functionality and custom webhooks are valuable for our organization because of how we deal with things at our organization by creating things in a very modular way. We will have different modules talking to each other for a specific complex workflow. A webhook is what helps solve most of it because we can create all the different modules as a separate workflow in Zapier with their own custom webhook URL and then call them or chain them together to create a complex workflow solving a bigger use case problem. Secondly, the delays, with having a bigger delay in number of days, gives the automation a bigger window to run in, which is not the case with make.com or any other platform that we use for automation. The delays on other platforms are mostly within the range of one to five minutes because the scenario needs to run on that particular go. With Zapier, the scenario can span over multiple days and it does not take up running memory. Rather than that, it goes to sleep and runs back again after the designated time. With Zapier, I am able to handle workflows much faster. I have been able to reduce the effort the manual onboarding team and the operations team had to do in terms of employee onboarding. We have reduced the workflow time and made things more efficient and smoother and avoided any repetitive tasks in the day-to-day workflow of a team member. There is a significant reduction in manual work and team members save time by eliminating multiple workflows which are repetitive in nature that the automation team builds for them using Zapier.

Pros

"With Ascend.io, infrastructure management and checkpointing are fully automated, drastically reducing our technical debt, allowing our data engineers to focus on business logic rather than cluster management or writing boilerplate ingestion code."
"Ascend.io has positively impacted my organization by making getting data much easier; it handles all those delta changes and other details from repeat calls, making the engineering aspect much easier, which means revisions and transformations could happen more frequently because our time was freed up."
"We have seen positive results, particularly in the time spent monitoring and troubleshooting the data pipelines, as Ascend.io has reduced manual investigation effort by approximately 30 to 40% because we can see pipeline dependencies, execution history, and data quality results in one place."
"One of the best features Ascend.io offers is Agentic analytics, which applies Agentic AI within systems to verify and operationalize data products, and it is live, allowing you to build systems and visualizations that turn data and different data sets into production-ready workflows."
"Webhooks are the most valuable feature of Zapier."
"Zapier luckily has a wide range of integrations, I would say."
"Technical support is fantastic; top notch."
"The included actions that satisfy our requirements are very useful."
"Zapier is the tool with the most connectors and has been quite forward in that case."
"The ability to connect web applications to trigger actions in another app after having enriched, formatted, delayed, grouped, and filtered is really valuable for many businesses."
"There are many uses for operations, marketing, and sales."
"We find it effortless to set up. We really don't have to do anything other than finding the application in the Zapier catalog. And as long as the application has been re-integrated into Zapier, they're able to then just provide the connection details and hook it up."

Cons

"Ascend.io can be improved regarding the initial learning curve because for those used to writing pure Spark code, a mindset shift is required to trust the tool's automation."
"Ascend.io can be improved because it is very expensive to scale on top of utilizing Snowflake, which itself is exceptionally expensive, making it very hard for any small to medium-sized business to validate that expense."
"Ascend.io can be improved by perhaps expanding its reach beyond small industries to get into big industries or large investment companies and big financial industries, revolutionizing how data plays certain roles in leadership and decision-making."
"Ascend.io could be improved by making the initial setup and onboarding more straightforward, especially for teams that are new to data engineering platforms."
"If the scenario or automation is complex, it becomes difficult to create and deploy because of various routes. For example, with 20 routes, it becomes really difficult to create them due to certain limits, and the UI is not conducive for viewing all the routes."
"System-to-system is fine, but when it comes to system-to-user, where Zapier is helping to communicate to a user, that's a one-way communication. If that user has to perform some action on that notification, the action isn't handled by Zapier. So there's no way to orchestrate that and it's very cumbersome."
"It could support various languages along with Python."
"The user interface for Zapier could be improved. It also takes some time to sync the data between different environments."
"Occasionally, we did have stability issues."
"Zapier is good for small businesses, but it’s not reliable enough for large enterprise businesses where you need to automate business critical services."
"My biggest concern with Zapier would be their pricing strategy."
"One issue I experienced was that when Zapier did not automate or threw an error, the error was not user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Per task, there is a monthly plan involving 15 euros...Also, in different forms, they just give you the ability to use different features. They charge 18.58 euros for the first standard plan, which includes 750 tasks. So, it is about 25 cents per task."
"The price of Zapier is approximately $75 monthly."
"It's very affordable."
"The least expensive plan is $24 a month, and you can go all the way to $800 a month if you're a huge company using many tasks."
"Think your Zaps through to make sure you don't use more Zaps than you need."
"Zapier is a paid service. Its license renews monthly, and Zapier will downgrade your subscription to the free version when your credit card doesn't have funds. That significantly impacts your service because everything halts completely. Zapier doesn't have any hidden costs."
"The product is reasonably priced."
"There is a free plan that is, of course, limited. However, it allows you to understand and check true scenarios for a while."
