SQL Server's high availability and disaster recovery features work for supporting mission-critical applications, but there is much more to wish for. These features are not quite ready yet, although they do function. However, they could be significantly better. High availability and disaster recovery features should be improved in the next releases. I have noticed that everything could be improved or enhanced in the future, particularly temporal tables and window functions. Sometimes, I believe Microsoft releases features to stay ahead of competitors, but they do not make them feature-rich or feature-complete. They release something to be ahead of leaders and then seem to forget to maintain and upgrade them. I want Microsoft to pay more attention and be more mindful about the things they implement. It is fine to do a first release that works, but you cannot simply abandon it in the following years without service packs and improvements. You must continue to build on features rather than forgetting about them.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The deployment of our solution across a number of servers using Ingres .NET has meant that we can protect the database server behind a highly secure firewall and deploy the front end solutions on a normal web server."
"The most valuable features for us are reliability and performance."
"Ingres is the only database solution that has maintained a level of consistency and integrity about the way users interact with it."
"SQL Server, generally speaking, is stable also in high transaction environments."
"We primarily use it for our two-tier and three-tier applications."
"I value the ability it gives me to test on small machines and easily scale up to larger devices for live applications."
"It's a good option for those that have a lot of Microsoft solutions in use."
"In summary, this is a good product, I plan to continue using it, and I definitely recommend it."
"I feel that this is the simplest of solutions; it is user-friendly, is a robust tool and is always reliable to users."
"This solution has proven stability and operational power."
"The columnstore index feature is useful for us, and we also use the integration services. It is also very stable."

Cons

"The seamless integration is a bit of an issue."
"The ability to reset the log file without stopping the DBMS would be helpful for us."
"Regarding integration, the solution works well for different courses without any issues. However, if we want to add machine learning and AI capabilities for business analytics, that's an area where improvements could be made."
"Overall, trying to make over with Oracle, it can be improved in usage for high data migration companies of large scale."
"The solution needs to be more secure. It's lacking, compared to, for example, Oracle."
"The backup capacity needs to be bigger."
"Due to the fact that I'm dealing with the product more as a data analyst, the SQL Server management studio is really relatively primitive compared to other more advanced tools."
"They have too many licensing options. They may want to simplify its licensing and bring it down to two, three, or four categories from ten to fifteen categories. Having so many different licensing options makes it difficult to decide which one to choose from. They can club things together. This is an area where they can make things easier for customers."
"We are on an annual enterprise license for the solution and the cost of the license could be reduced."
"The areas that need improvement are with regards to the commercial aspect of the solution, the licensing cost could be reduced in order to help customers to adopt it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"For medium-sized customers who don't need some enterprise features, the tool would be available for 200 USD per month. For the enterprise segment, the tool's cost can go up to 6,000 USD."
"The SQL server is affordable. I rate the pricing a five out of ten."
"With recent releases, the Standard Edition (cheaper) SKU has some of the earlier version Enterprise features. SQL Express has some limitations."
"It is expensive."
"We are a Microsoft shop, so we use Active Directory. That integrates well with this product, but we did look at Oracle. We also looked at IBM. This was the best price point for us for what we were getting."
"It is annual."
"It has the easiest licensing."
"Licensing fees increase depending on size and performance. If you want higher performance, you should go for a different course."
