Reliable image backups have protected our HMIs and simplified on‑premises recovery
We have not tried the vulnerability assessment feature yet because we have a different set of protocols for our cybersecurity. We conduct audits and plug the gaps as part of our security approach. We are not using AI with the anti-malware from Acronis; we are using it only for backup and recovery. On the backup and restoration side with Acronis Backup, some on-premises AI features which can detect anomalies may be something which would improve the product significantly. Otherwise, we are not very comfortable with cloud-based solutions at this time. We are looking for products which are entirely on-premises, so they remain within our control.

Reliable and cost-effective
One area where Synology DSM could improve is in enhancing its ability to detect and respond to security threats during backups and replication. Currently, it lacks the capability to automatically stop backups if it detects a virus or suspicious network activity, as some third-party solutions can. Having AI-driven analytics to identify anomalies and halt backups during potential attacks, along with notifications to administrators, would be valuable. Additionally, providing a dashboard for monitoring the backup environment's security would be a beneficial feature. These improvements would help address security concerns and make Synology more competitive in this aspect.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have never had a backup fail because of the software."
"Upon discovering Acronis, I was fascinated by the flexible granular detailed features of 'what to and where to (multiple locations)' backup and its central management capabilities as opposed to Windows' local system administration."
"Consistency and reliability. The interface is easy to understand and consistent across applications. While not 100%, it is a very reliable backup solution."
"The product meets our company's disaster recovery needs."
"The solution has all the features I need and user friendly."
"Centralized management is valuable to us."
"I can encrypt the data, I can make it send me an email if it fails. It lets me choose which files I want to ignore during backup."
"The good thing is that it's a central console, and in that console itself, we have multiple options, including a file sync option, the ability to take a second backup with the client's own cloud and a universal backup that is like a complete image of the server backup level, and that restoration is very good on the Acronis side compared to other products."
"Because of its simplicity and the wide array of features it offers, I would recommend DSM for both tech-savvy individuals and those who prefer a straightforward file-serving solution."
"The product performs well. It is easy to use and implement."
"The solution's most valuable feature stems from its ease of use, making it the tool's most interesting part."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is that it serves as a backup for our company's virtual machine."
"It offers a variety of software options through its package center, allowing users to customize their NAS device to serve multiple purposes."
"The most valuable aspect is its ability to handle multiple disks."
"The most valuable features of Synology DSM are its security and connectivity."
"Synology DSM is very easy to work and operate."

Cons

"Acronis Backup can improve on the virtualization backups because they are not as good as Veeam Backup."
"The technical support needs some improvement."
"The initial setup was complex. We had to deploy it through an external consultant team."
"There is no technical support available for this product and there is also minimal documentation available."
"More flexibility with Acronis Linux Console ability to run modules such as the Acronis Windows console; some LINUS modules are locked."
"I would change the GUI a little to make it a bit more interactive."
"They need to continue working on it to make it work more smoothly and faster."
"If there was a wizard that would lead you down a road, when creating a backup, that would probably be better than having to go online or call somebody to actually do a backup. It's not intuitive..."
"Synology DSM is a good enough solution for small and medium companies, but I have not seen a big configuration of the solution for a big organization."
"The platform could be much more cost-effective and flexible for integrating third-party products."
"There's a surveillance application that allows you to connect IP cameras and stream footage to Synology and it is a great feature, but it's not always clear that adding more cameras may require purchasing additional licenses."
"Synology DSM's user interface is not quite intuitive."
"Users may lose their data if they don't configure the solution properly."
"Even though Synology provides a backup solution, it does not recognize the VM movement across cluster hosts."
"The only bothersome aspect is that the device is aging."
"The product's only shortcoming is pricing, as it is an expensive solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The tool is cheap compared to other products."
"The price of Acronis Backup could be reduced, it is expensive."
"The pricing is significantly higher than it was last year, which is understandable since they have introduced new technology, such as transitioning from backup to cybersecurity."
"We use the free version that provides very basic functionalities."
"The pricing is comparable to the newest solution available on the market, Altaro."
"Doing what this is capable of doing, the cost of it is in line."
"We pay a yearly subscription fee and the pricing is reasonable."
"There is a license required to use this solution and it is inexpensive. However, it is an old license."
"Synology DSM is a free tool."
"The licensing part of the solution is free. The hardware is more expensive than the other solutions in the market, but it's okay in the long run."
"The price of the solution is very good."
"Synology DSM is a cheap solution."
"The solution’s pricing is neither cheap nor expensive."
"The pricing varies widely, catering to a broad range of needs."
"It is quite an affordable solution."
