This was one of the greatest monitoring tools for a long time. Unfortunately, it's gone down pretty fast. After coupling BMC Patrol with BMC BPPM, many features changed which increased the level of complication as well. Now, there is too much maintenance involved, a lot of data collection issues, and so on.
BMC must come up with a unified monitoring framework to bring everything under a single tree, rather than having multiple products to get things done. The current tool set for infrastructure monitoring works together poorly.
The monitoring capabilities were very strong with respect to key performance indicators. Also, it used much less CPU and memory footprints on the server as the core code is built in C.
BMC Patrol and BMC BPPM were two in a box a few years ago, and both were integrated and combined as a single monitoring solution. The integration was very loose, which created a lot of issues with respect to data loss, and so on, but this is getting better in the newer versions.
Key performance indicators become limited as BPPM is a hefty piece of software that does a lot of database lining for intelligent alerts. So, the scalability is an issue, wherein you need multiple BPPM servers to handle more servers in the environment. This was not the case with the older BMC Patrol solution. Most of the Patrol customers moved to BPPM, and then finally to other vendors due to the above issues.
Basically it was great monitoring software, and it was part of the Gartner Magic Quadrant six years ago, but it is losing its ground, and now they are nowhere as new unified software solutions are taking the lead.
